Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

I didn’t hear it hit the floor.

I only heard one thing.

My own heartbeat.

Because the woman in that picture was my mother.

Standing beside my father.

Smiling.

Not crying.

Not afraid.

Smiling.

Three years ago.

The same year she told me she received a mysterious letter saying my father was alive.

The same year she told me she didn’t know if it was real.

I looked at her.

She looked away.

And that hurt more than the photograph.

“Mom.””

My voice barely came out.

She closed her eyes.

“Adrian…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t say my name like you’re sorry.””

The smoke alarm continued screaming.

The mansion was surrounded by chaos.

But none of it mattered.

Not anymore.

“Explain the picture.””

My mother didn’t answer.

Selena stepped forward.

“I can.””

I turned toward her.

“Not another word from you.””

Her smile faded.

For once, she looked like she understood that she had lost control of the situation.

This wasn’t her game anymore.

This was my family falling apart.

Marcus picked up the photograph from the floor.

“Selena gave you this because she wants you angry.””

I looked at him.

“Is it fake?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Is it fake?””

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“Then tell me why.””

Marcus looked at my mother.

She gave the smallest nod.

Like she was finally giving up the fight.

“Because your father was alive.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“I know that part.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You don’t understand.””

He looked at the photograph.

“Your father wasn’t hiding from us.””

“Then who was he hiding from?””

Marcus looked at Selena.

“Her.””

Selena’s face changed.

“What?””

I stared between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus pointed toward Selena.

“She wasn’t sent here to steal the company.””

Selena’s expression hardened.

“Careful.””

“She was sent here to find Thomas.””

My eyes moved to Selena.

She didn’t deny it.

And that was terrifying.

“Who sent you?””

She remained silent.

“Selena.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You really think I had a choice?””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at my mother.

“She knows.””

My mother looked down.

I turned toward her.

“You knew Selena was looking for Dad?””

My mother whispered:

“Yes.””

The answer felt like another betrayal.

“How long?””

“Since she first appeared in your life.””

My anger exploded.

“You knew?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed around the room.

“Everyone lies to me, then says they were protecting me.””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought if you knew the truth, you would go looking for him.””

“And?””

She looked at me.

“You would have found the people who wanted him dead.””

The words silenced me.

Because suddenly I remembered something.

My father’s warning.

Everyone you think you can trust.

I looked at Selena.

“Who are you working for?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Her real name isn’t Selena.””

I frowned.

She glared at him.

“Don’t.””

“Adrian deserves to know.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What is her real name?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Selena Hart.””

I waited.

Nothing.

The name meant nothing.

But Marcus continued.

“She is the daughter of Victor Hart.””

The blood drained from my face.

Because that name I knew.

Everyone in the business world knew.

Victor Hart was one of the most powerful investors in the country.

A man who had spent years competing with my father.

A man who publicly blamed Thomas Vale for destroying his company.

“He’s dead,” I said.

Marcus nodded.

“Five years ago.””

“Then why does it matter?””

“Because before he died, Victor admitted something.””

“What?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“He was involved in your father’s disappearance.””

The room went silent.

Selena laughed bitterly.

“You make it sound so simple.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“My father didn’t destroy your family.””

Marcus frowned.

“You expect us to believe that?””

“I expect him to know the truth.””

She looked at me.

“My father was trying to stop someone.””

“Who?””

Her eyes moved toward my mother.

My mother flinched.

I noticed.

And so did Selena.

“The person who benefited most from Thomas disappearing.””

My stomach turned.

“You’re accusing my mother again?””

“I’m saying your mother knows more than she admits.””

My mother stood.

“Enough.””

Her voice was stronger than before.

“I have spent twelve years protecting my son from this.””

Selena shook her head.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You spent twelve years protecting yourself.””

The words cut deep.

My mother looked like she had been slapped.

I moved between them.

“Stop.””

Everyone went quiet.

I looked at my mother.

“I need the truth.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she walked toward the cabinet.

From behind an old painting, she pulled out a small metal box.

I had never seen it before.

She placed it on the table.

“I kept this hidden because I was afraid.””

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And a small recorder.

I picked up the first photograph.

It showed my father.

Not twelve years ago.

Recently.

He looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

Standing beside him was another person.

Marcus looked at it.

His face changed.

“Where did you get this?””

My mother answered quietly.

“From Thomas.””

I looked at her.

“You met him?””

She nodded.

“Three years ago.””

The room went completely silent.

“You saw him.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because he made me promise.””

I stared at her.

“He asked you to hide from me?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She touched the photograph.

“He asked me to protect you.””

“From what?””

She looked at the recorder.

“From the truth.””

I picked it up.

“What is this?””

“Your father’s final message.””

My hands tightened.

“Final?””

She nodded.

“He knew he might not survive.””

The room became quiet.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My father.

Older than I remembered.

But unmistakable.

“Adrian…”

My breath caught.

“If you’re hearing this, then I’m either gone…”

A pause.

“…or someone made sure I stayed hidden.””

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

A long silence.

“I did not leave because I wanted to.””

My eyes burned.

“I left because the person closest to me was the only person who could get close enough to destroy everything.””

The recording paused.

Then my father said:

“And Adrian…”

His voice softened.

“If your mother is with you when you hear this…”

Everyone froze.

My father continued.

“Do not blame her.””

I looked at my mother.

Confusion hit me.

Because those were not the words I expected.

“She did what I asked her to do.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“She hid the money because I needed someone I trusted to protect it.””

I looked at Selena.

Then Marcus.

Then my mother.

“But she made one mistake.””

The room became still.

“She trusted the wrong person.””

A crackling sound came from the recorder.

Then my father spoke his final words.

“Adrian, the person who betrayed me…”

The recording cut out.

Everyone stared.

I shook the device.

“No.””

I pressed the button again.

Nothing.

The battery was dead.

“Who?”” I whispered.

“Who betrayed you?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

“What?””

A voice came through the speaker.

Even from several feet away, I heard it.

A man.

Calm.

Confident.

And familiar.

“Marcus.””

My uncle froze.

The voice continued.

“You failed.””

Marcus turned pale.

“I thought you were dead.””

A pause.

Then the man laughed.

“No, Marcus.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that laugh.

I had heard it in old family videos.

At birthday dinners.

During childhood memories.

The voice said:

“I was only waiting.””

Marcus dropped the phone.

I stared at him.

“Who was that?””

He looked at me.

His face filled with fear.

And then he whispered the name.

A name that made the entire world I knew collapse.

“Thomas Vale.””

My father.

Alive.

Calling us.

And he wasn’t alone.

Because in the background of the call…

I heard another voice.

A woman’s voice.

May you like

A voice I recognized.

My mother’s.
