Chapter 11: The Brother Who Came Back Wrong
The abandoned property stood at the end of a gravel road surrounded by eucalyptus trees.
Alejandro arrived shortly after sunset.
He brought Daniel, but no security team. If the man waiting inside truly was Sebastián, Alejandro wanted answers before the encounter became another family spectacle.
The house looked as though it had been empty for years. Its windows were boarded, its roof sagged in the middle, and weeds covered the stone steps.
Daniel checked the perimeter.
“No movement outside.””
Alejandro approached the front door.
It opened before he could knock.
A man stood in the darkness.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a black shirt. His hair had grayed at the temples, but his face was unmistakably familiar.
Alejandro felt his chest tighten.
“Sebastián?””
The man smiled.
“Hello, little brother.””
Alejandro stood frozen.
For four years, he had imagined this moment in a hundred different ways. He had pictured anger, disbelief, relief, even violence.
He hadn't imagined that his brother would look at him with the same easy smile he had worn as a boy.
“You're alive,” Alejandro whispered.
Sebastián stepped forward and embraced him.
Alejandro stood rigidly for a second before wrapping his arms around him.
His brother smelled of tobacco and cedarwood, exactly as he remembered.
But when Sebastián pulled away, Alejandro noticed the scar on his left hand.
It was there.
The white line across the index knuckle.
“You're really here,” Alejandro said.
Sebastián nodded.
“I never wanted you to grieve for me.””
“Then why did you let me bury you?””
Sebastián's smile disappeared.
“Because our father was going to kill me.””
Alejandro stared at him.
“Arturo is dead.””
“Now he is.””
The words chilled the room.
Daniel moved closer to Alejandro.
“Sir, we should—”
Sebastián raised both hands.
“Relax. I didn't invite you here to start a fight.””
He turned and walked into the house.
A single lamp illuminated a table covered with documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings.
On the wall hung a photograph of Arturo Villaseñor shaking hands with Rafael Mendoza.
Alejandro stopped in front of it.
“Tell me everything.””
Sebastián poured two glasses of water.
“Sit down.””
“I'm not here for a drink.””
“Then stand. But listen.””
Sebastián placed one hand on the table.
“Arturo discovered that Rafael had been moving money out of the family company. The two men had built the business together, but Rafael believed he deserved more than his share.””
Alejandro frowned.
“That doesn't explain why he became my biological father.””
Sebastián's eyes narrowed.
“Because your mother loved Rafael before she married Arturo. They had an affair. When she became pregnant, Arturo knew the child might not be his.””
“And he raised me anyway?””
“He raised you because he loved your mother. But he also raised you to control you.””
Alejandro shook his head.
“That doesn't sound like the man I knew.””
“You knew the man he wanted you to know.””
Sebastián opened a folder.
Inside were financial records showing enormous transfers between offshore companies. Several bore Arturo's signature.
Others bore the signature of a man named Rafael Mendoza.
“The company was never built on clean money,” Sebastián said.
“Arturo and Rafael used shell corporations, falsified contracts, and political favors. When Rafael tried to expose the arrangement, Arturo arranged the fire at the old estate.””
Alejandro stared at him.
“You're saying our father killed Rafael?””
“That's what I believed.””
“Then why is Rafael alive?””
Sebastián's face darkened.
“Because the man who died in that fire was not Rafael.””
Alejandro felt the room tilt.
“Who was it?””
Sebastián hesitated.
“A man who worked for him. Someone who had the same height and build. Arturo used the confusion to convince everyone Rafael was dead.””
“And my mother?””
“She discovered the truth. She wanted to leave Arturo and take you with her.””
Alejandro's throat tightened.
“But she died in a car accident.””
Sebastián looked at him.
“Did you ever see the brake inspection report?””
“No.””
“Did you ever ask why the mechanic who serviced the car disappeared three days later?””
Alejandro's hands curled into fists.
“No.””
“Because Arturo made sure you never would.””
The room fell silent.
Alejandro looked at the documents.
His father's signature appeared on a transfer authorization dated two days after his mother's death.
The payment recipient was the same mechanic.
“Why are you telling me this now?”” Alejandro asked.
Sebastián sat down.
“Because Arturo is dead, Rafael has returned, and the company is about to be torn apart by people who know the truth.””
“You could have told me years ago.””
“I tried.””
Elena's words returned to Alejandro.
He tried to contact you once. Someone intercepted the message.
Sebastián opened another folder.
Inside was a letter addressed to Alejandro, dated four years earlier.
Alejandro,
If you receive this, do not trust the man who calls himself Sebastián Villaseñor.
He has taken my name, my face, and my place in the family.
I am your brother, and I am still alive.
Alejandro stared at the handwriting.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Arthur's safe.””
“Who wrote it?””
Sebastián looked at him for a long moment.
Then he said, “The real Sebastián.””
Alejandro felt his stomach drop.
He looked at the man standing before him.
The scar.
The voice.
The familiar smile.
“What are you saying?””
Sebastián took a step back.
“My name is Gabriel Mendoza.””
Alejandro reached for the table.
“Rafael's son?””
Gabriel nodded.
“Your mother's stepson, technically. Rafael raised me after the fire. When I was older, he told me the truth about the Villaseñor family.””
Alejandro stared at him.
“You impersonated my brother.””
“I was protecting the family.””
“By letting me mourn a man who was alive?””
“By keeping Arturo from discovering the real Sebastián had survived.””
Alejandro's voice rose.
“Where is he?””
Gabriel's expression hardened.
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I last saw him four years ago. He was planning to expose Arturo's crimes. Then he vanished.””
Alejandro took a step forward.
“You stole his identity, manipulated my family, and helped keep Elena away from me.””
Gabriel's eyes flashed.
“I never touched Elena.””
“But you knew where she was.””
“I knew she was alive. I didn't know where Arturo had taken her.””
“You expect me to believe that too?””
Gabriel looked toward the window.
“Believe whatever you want. But if you think the danger ended when Arturo died, you're wrong.””
He pulled a final document from the folder.
It was a corporate trust agreement.
Alejandro scanned the first page.
Then he stopped.
The document named a third beneficiary, one whose existence had been hidden from the company for decades.
A child born outside the Villaseñor marriage.
A child whose legal identity had been concealed.
The name was handwritten in the margin.
*Camila Castillo.*
Alejandro's heart began to pound.
“Why is my daughter listed here?””
Gabriel's face went pale.
“Because she isn't just your daughter.””
Alejandro stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Gabriel leaned forward.
“Camila was born with a rare genetic marker that links her directly to the original Mendoza inheritance. If the trust is authenticated, she can claim assets Arturo spent thirty years hiding.””
Alejandro's jaw tightened.
“So the Varelas stole her for money.””
“Not just money. Control of the company. The trust was designed to pass to Rafael's direct descendants if the Villaseñor line failed.””
“And Valentina?””
“Valentina is your biological daughter. Camila is too. But Camila's birth gives her a legal claim that Valentina doesn't have.””
Alejandro looked at the document again.
The family had turned his daughters into pieces on a board.
One child represented the future of his company.
The other represented a fortune that had been stolen decades earlier.
And both had been robbed of the right to grow up without fear.
He folded the document.
“I'm taking this to the authorities.””
Gabriel shook his head.
“You can't. The moment you do, Rafael will disappear again.””
“Where is he?””
Gabriel looked away.
“I don't know.””
Alejandro stepped closer.
“Then why did you bring me here?””
Gabriel reached into his pocket and placed a small key on the table.
“Because Rafael left something for you at the old estate. Something Arturo never found.””
“What?””
“A recording of the night your mother died.””
Alejandro stared at the key.
“Where is it?””
Gabriel looked directly into his eyes.
“Beneath the family mausoleum.””
May you like
Then, for the first time, Gabriel's voice trembled.
“But you need to get there before the real Sebastián does.””
