Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Alejandro had spent his entire life believing there was no problem money couldn't solve.

He could buy buildings, silence competitors, replace executives, and make entire companies bend to his will.

But as he stared at the photograph of Elena with a bruise across her cheek, he understood that money meant nothing when the people he loved were being used against him.

“Get me another phone,” he told Daniel.

Daniel looked at the message.

“Sir, we can't trust the number. It could be a trap.””

“It is a trap.””

“Then why are we going?””

Alejandro slid the phone into his pocket.

“Because Elena is alive.””

Clara stood beside the SUV, pale and visibly shaken.

“If Isabella has her, the girls may be there too.””

“Then we take all three of them home.””

Daniel opened the driver's door.

“I'll contact a tactical team and have them stand by outside the estate.””

“No police until we know where the children are.””

“Sir—”

“Daniel, if Isabella thinks she's cornered, she could hurt them.””

Daniel fell silent.

He had worked for Alejandro for eleven years. He knew that tone. It was the voice Alejandro used when he had already made a decision and would not be moved.

Clara climbed into the back seat.

“I know another way inside the Varela estate,” she said.

“But you need to understand something before we go.””

Alejandro looked at her through the rearview mirror.

“What?””

“Isabella isn't the one who planned all of this. Her father is.””

Alejandro's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Then we'll deal with him too.””

The Varela estate stood behind high stone walls on the outskirts of Puerto Azul. Floodlights illuminated the gardens, and security cameras tracked every movement along the main drive.

Alejandro had attended several dinners there.

He had once sat across from Isabella's father, Eduardo Varela, while the older man discussed a proposed merger and praised Alejandro's business instincts.

Now he wondered whether Eduardo had been planning his destruction during those same dinners.

Clara guided them down a narrow road behind the property.

“Stop here.””

Alejandro pulled over beside a greenhouse hidden beneath climbing ivy.

Clara pointed toward a metal door.

“That leads to the service corridor. My father helped install the original security system. There's a blind spot near the eastern wall.””

Daniel examined the cameras.

“The system has been upgraded.””

Clara's face tightened.

“Then someone knew we might come.””

Alejandro stepped out.

“We're already expected.””

He approached the door and entered the access code Clara provided.

The lock clicked.

Inside, the corridor smelled of damp earth and fertilizer. They passed rows of gardening tools before reaching a narrow staircase leading to the main house.

Voices drifted from the room above.

Alejandro recognized Isabella immediately.

“Put the little one in the blue room. And don't let her near the windows.””

Another voice answered.

“What about the other child?””

“Keep her downstairs until my father arrives.””

Alejandro stopped on the stairs.

Daniel leaned close.

“Two rooms. Two children. We can reach them from opposite directions.””

Alejandro shook his head.

“No. We find Elena first.””

Clara pointed toward a corridor on the left.

“The old guest rooms are down there. If Elena is here, she'll be in one of those.””

They moved quietly.

At the end of the corridor stood a locked door with a brass handle.

Alejandro tried it.

Locked.

He pounded once.

“Elena?””

Silence.

He pressed his forehead against the wood.

“It's me.””

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then he heard a faint movement.

A woman's voice whispered, “Go away.””

Alejandro's heart clenched.

“Elena, please. It's Alejandro.””

The lock rattled.

The door opened a few inches.

A pale face appeared in the gap.

Her hair was shorter. Her cheeks were hollow, and a purple bruise marked the skin beneath her left eye.

But it was her.

Elena.

The woman he had searched for.

The woman he had mourned without a grave.

The woman he had loved every day despite trying to convince himself otherwise.

She stared at him as though he were a ghost.

“No,” she whispered.

Alejandro took one step forward.

“It's me.””

“You can't be here.””

“I found Valentina.””

Elena's hand flew to her mouth.

“She's alive?””

“She's safe. Marisol is with her.””

Tears spilled down Elena's face.

“Oh, thank God.””

Alejandro reached for her, but she recoiled.

“Don't touch me.””

He stopped instantly.

“I'm sorry.””

“You shouldn't have come.””

“Someone sent me a photograph of you. They threatened to kill you.””

Elena glanced toward the corridor.

“They'll kill all of us if they know you're here.””

“Who?””

Before she could answer, a voice sounded behind them.

“That's a touching reunion.””

Eduardo Varela stood at the end of the hallway, flanked by two security guards.

He wore a charcoal suit and held a glass of whiskey.

His expression suggested that Alejandro had arrived for a business appointment rather than a rescue.

“Mr. Villaseñor,” Eduardo said.

“You have a remarkable talent for ignoring instructions.””

Alejandro moved in front of Elena.

“Where are my daughters?””

Eduardo smiled.

“Your daughters? What a possessive word.””

“Where are they?””

“Safe. For now.””

Alejandro's fists clenched.

“If you touch either of them—”

Eduardo raised a hand.

“Please. Threats are tedious. You came here because you want something. I came here because I have it.””

He took a folded document from his jacket.

“The original birth records. The chapel's hidden archive. Your father's private correspondence.””

Alejandro's stomach tightened.

“How do you know about the archive?””

“Because your father and I built this arrangement together.””

Elena closed her eyes.

Eduardo glanced at her.

“Your beloved was never particularly good at keeping secrets.””

Alejandro lunged forward, but Daniel caught his arm.

“Sir, don't.””

Eduardo laughed softly.

“Still impulsive. Just like your brother.””

The mention of Sebastián made Alejandro go still.

“You know where he is.””

“Of course.””

“Tell me.””

Eduardo took a sip of whiskey.

“Bring me the records, and I'll tell you where your brother is hiding. Refuse, and you can spend the rest of your life wondering which of your family members you failed to save.””

Alejandro studied him.

“Why are you doing this?””

Eduardo's smile disappeared.

“Because your father promised me something that your family has spent generations protecting. And because he died before he could deliver it.””

“What?””

Eduardo leaned closer.

“The truth about who really owns the Villaseñor fortune.””

For the first time, Alejandro saw something beneath the older man's arrogance.

Fear.

Not fear of Alejandro.

Fear of what would happen if the truth emerged.

A crash sounded from the far end of the house.

One of the guards turned.

Eduardo swore.

Daniel moved immediately, striking the nearest guard and forcing him against the wall.

Alejandro grabbed Eduardo's wrist.

“Where are the children?””

Eduardo tried to pull free.

“You're making a terrible mistake!””

“Where?””

A woman's scream came from upstairs.

Then a small voice cried, “Daddy!””

Alejandro released Eduardo and ran.

At the top of the stairs, Isabella stood outside a blue bedroom, holding Valentina by the arm.

Valentina's rabbit lay on the floor.

“Let her go!”” Alejandro shouted.

Isabella spun around.

For one terrible second, she looked genuinely frightened.

Then she pulled Valentina against her side and pressed a small silver key into the child's palm.

“Take one more step,” Isabella warned, “and you'll never see either of your daughters again.””

Alejandro stopped.

Valentina's face crumpled.

“Daddy, please.””

Behind Isabella, the bedroom door opened slightly.

Another little girl appeared.

Dark curls. A pale blue dress. A silver bracelet.

Camila.

She looked at Alejandro with frightened eyes.

Then she whispered something that made Elena cry out from the corridor.

“That's not my real mother.””

May you like

Isabella's face turned white.

And Eduardo, standing at the bottom of the staircase, began to laugh.
