Chapter 12: The Recording Beneath the Mausoleum
Alejandro returned to the mansion shortly before midnight.
The girls were asleep, and Elena sat in the kitchen with a cup of tea she had barely touched.
She looked up when he entered.
“Did you find him?””
“I found someone using my brother's identity.””
Elena set the cup down.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the man who called himself Sebastián was actually Gabriel Mendoza. The real Sebastián disappeared four years ago.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“I knew something was wrong.””
Alejandro sat across from her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't know what to believe. Your father said Sebastián had become dangerous. Then he told me the man visiting the hospital was your brother, but that man didn't remember anything about me.””
She rubbed her temples.
“I thought I was losing my mind.””
Alejandro reached across the table and took her hand.
“You weren't.””
For a moment, they sat in silence.
Then Elena looked at him.
“Did you find out why they took Camila?””
He nodded.
“There's an inheritance involved. A trust connected to my biological father.””
Elena's expression changed.
“Rafael Mendoza?””
Alejandro froze.
“You know that name?””
Elena hesitated.
“Your mother told me about him once. She said he had loved her before she married Arturo.””
“Did she tell you anything else?””
“She said Rafael had a son. A boy who disappeared after the fire.””
“Sebastián?””
“I don't know. She never said his name.””
Alejandro leaned back.
The pieces were beginning to fit together, but every answer revealed another secret.
He looked toward the staircase.
“I'm going to the old estate tomorrow.””
Elena immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“I need to find the recording.””
“Your mother died there. Arturo hid something beneath the mausoleum. And now people are willing to kidnap children over a piece of paper.””
“That's exactly why I have to go.””
Elena's eyes filled with fear.
“Promise me you'll come back.””
Alejandro stood and knelt beside her chair.
“I promise.””
She touched his face.
“You promised once before that you'd never let anyone separate us.””
He bowed his head.
“I know.””
“You couldn't keep that promise.””
“No,” he whispered.
“But I can keep this one.””
Elena studied him.
Then she leaned forward and kissed his forehead.
“Bring the truth home.””
The Villaseñor mausoleum stood on a hill behind the abandoned estate, surrounded by cypress trees and iron fencing.
Alejandro arrived at dawn with Daniel and a small forensic team. He had informed the police of the suspected evidence, but he hadn't mentioned the inheritance documents or Gabriel's involvement.
The air was cold.
Mist clung to the grass.
At the entrance, Alejandro used Gabriel's key to unlock a narrow side door.
Inside, the mausoleum smelled of stone and damp earth. Marble plaques covered the walls, each engraved with the name of a family member.
His mother's plaque stood near the back.
*ISABELLA VILLASEÑOR. BELOVED WIFE AND MOTHER.*
Alejandro touched the marble.
“I wish you'd told me the truth.””
Daniel stood nearby, watching the entrance.
“Sir, the forensic team is ready.””
Alejandro nodded.
They began examining the floor beneath the central altar.
After twenty minutes, one of the technicians found a loose stone.
Beneath it was a metal compartment containing a small recorder, several envelopes, and a sealed leather pouch.
Alejandro picked up the recorder.
A handwritten label was attached.
For Alejandro, when he is old enough to understand.
His hands shook.
He pressed play.
Static filled the chamber.
Then his mother's voice emerged.
“Alejandro, my sweet boy. If you're hearing this, something has happened to me, and your father has failed to keep his promise.””
Alejandro closed his eyes.
Her voice was softer than he remembered.
“I need you to know that I loved you before you were born. I loved you before I knew who your father was. And I loved you every day afterward.””
A pause.
“I made mistakes. I stayed silent when I should have spoken. I believed Arturo could protect us, but he was more afraid of losing control than he was of losing the people he loved.””
Alejandro pressed a hand over his mouth.
The recording continued.
“Rafael is your biological father. Arturo knew this before we married. He accepted you as his son, but he never forgave me for loving another man.””
Daniel lowered his gaze.
“Years later, Arturo discovered that Rafael had survived the fire. He became convinced Rafael would return to claim the company. He began moving money, forging documents, and arranging for certain people to disappear.””
A sudden crackle interrupted the recording.
Then his mother's voice returned, urgent and frightened.
“On the night of my accident, I was going to meet Rafael. Arturo found out. He told me that if I left, I would lose both my sons.””
Alejandro stopped breathing.
Both sons.
Not just him.
His mother had known about Sebastián.
The recording continued.
“I refused. I told him I would take the boys and leave the country. He became furious.””
A sound followed.
A chair scraping.
A man's voice.
Arturo.
“You will not take my sons away from me.””
His mother's voice trembled.
“They are not possessions, Arturo.””
“You owe me everything.””
“I owe you nothing.””
A loud crash.
Then silence.
Alejandro gripped the recorder.
When his mother's voice returned, she was crying.
“Please, Arturo. Don't do this.””
A door slammed.
Footsteps.
Then another voice entered the recording.
A younger man's voice.
“Father, what have you done?””
Alejandro's blood ran cold.
It was Sebastián.
Arturo answered.
“What I had to do.””
“You killed her.””
“I protected this family.””
“You destroyed it!””
A struggle erupted.
The recorder captured a heavy thud, followed by labored breathing.
Then Arturo spoke again.
“Help me move her.””
Alejandro stumbled backward.
Daniel caught his arm.
“Sir?””
He couldn't answer.
The recording continued for several more seconds.
Sebastián's voice returned, quieter now.
“If you ever hurt Alejandro, I'll destroy everything you've built.””
Arturo laughed.
“You won't destroy anything. You're my son.””
“No,” Sebastián said.
“I'm Rafael's.””
The recording ended.
Alejandro stood motionless.
His mother had not died in a simple accident.
She had been threatened by Arturo, confronted by Sebastián, and somehow ended up dead before she could leave the estate.
But the recording did not reveal who had caused the fatal crash.
Nor did it explain why Sebastián had vanished afterward.
Daniel opened the leather pouch.
Inside were two birth certificates, a handwritten family tree, and a photograph of three men standing outside the old estate.
Arturo.
Rafael.
And Sebastián.
On the back, someone had written:
One father. Two sons. Three lies.
Daniel examined the documents.
“Sir, there's a second recording.””
Alejandro turned.
The technician had found another device inside the compartment.
This one was smaller, its casing cracked.
A label bore a date from four years earlier.
The day Sebastián supposedly died.
Alejandro pressed play.
At first, there was only wind.
Then a man spoke.
“I know you're listening, Alejandro.””
The voice was unmistakable.
Sebastián.
“If you're hearing this, I've failed to reach you. Arturo's people are watching me, and I don't know who I can trust.””
A pause.
“I need you to understand something. The man who raised us wasn't the only one lying.””
Alejandro leaned closer.
“Rafael has been using the inheritance dispute to manipulate everyone. He wants the company, and he wants revenge for what happened to our mother.””
A car engine roared in the background.
Sebastián continued.
“He told me Arturo killed Isabella. But I was there that night, Alejandro. I saw what happened.””
Alejandro's heart pounded.
“What did you see?”” he whispered, though the recording could not hear him.
Sebastián's voice became strained.
“Rafael arrived at the estate before the crash. He argued with Mother. He said she had to choose between him and Arturo.””
A long silence followed.
Then Sebastián said the words that changed everything.
“Rafael was the one who sabotaged the car.””
Alejandro felt his knees weaken.
His biological father had murdered the woman he loved.
The recording continued.
“I tried to stop him. Arturo found out, and he made me choose between protecting you and exposing the truth. I chose you.””
A sharp impact sounded.
The recording cut off.
Daniel stared at Alejandro.
“Sir, we need to leave. Now.””
“Why?””
Daniel pointed toward the entrance.
A black vehicle had stopped outside the mausoleum.
Three men stepped out.
One carried a rifle.
Another held a metal case.
The third man walked slowly toward the door.
He was older, with silver hair and a dark overcoat.
Alejandro recognized him from the photograph.
Rafael Mendoza.
His biological father.
The man whose face he carried.
The man who had destroyed his mother's life.
Rafael stopped at the entrance and looked directly at him.
“You've found the recordings,” he said.
Alejandro raised the device.
“You killed my mother.””
Rafael's expression barely changed.
“She was going to destroy everything.””
“You murdered her.””
“I made a decision.””
Alejandro took one step forward.
“You don't get to call murder a decision.””
Rafael sighed.
“You sound exactly like Arturo.””
“I am nothing like him.””
“No,” Rafael said softly.
“You're worse. Arturo at least understood that family requires sacrifice.””
He glanced toward the leather pouch.
“Give me the documents.””
“Why?””
“Because they belong to me.””
Alejandro shook his head.
“You don't own anything here.””
Rafael's expression hardened.
“Then perhaps I should remind you who owns your daughters.””
Alejandro went still.
Rafael smiled.
“Did you really believe Isabella was acting alone? Did you think the Varelas had the power to arrange the adoptions, falsify medical records, and hide Elena for three years without help?””
Alejandro's stomach tightened.
“What did you do?””
Rafael stepped into the mausoleum.
“I gave them the means. Your father gave them permission. And you, my son, gave them the perfect distraction by falling in love with the wrong woman.””
Daniel raised his weapon.
“Stop right there!””
Rafael's men lifted theirs.
The chamber filled with tension.
Rafael looked at Alejandro.
“Come with me. I'll tell you where the real Sebastián is.””
Alejandro's breath caught.
“You know where he is?””
“I've always known.””
“Then tell me.””
Rafael smiled sadly.
“Not until you understand the final truth.””
He reached into his coat and produced a photograph.
It showed Sebastián standing beside Elena outside a hospital.
On the back, a date had been written.
Three days before Valentina's birth.
Beneath it were six words.
*Sebastián is the twins' biological father.*
Alejandro stared at the photograph.
The room seemed to spin.
Rafael's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Now you understand why I had to keep you apart.””
May you like
And as Alejandro looked from the photograph to the man who had just confessed to destroying his family, he realized the most terrible possibility of all.
What if the children he had spent his life trying to protect had been born from a secret that would destroy everything he believed about love, loyalty, and blood?
