Chapter 14: The Last Villaseñor Secret
“Sebastián!””
Alejandro scrambled across the floor.
His brother had collapsed against the wall, one hand pressed to his shoulder. Blood spread between his fingers.
Rafael stood near the doorway, holding a pistol.
“You should have stayed dead,” Rafael said.
Alejandro reached for the fallen chair and hurled it at him.
Rafael stumbled, and the gun skidded across the floor.
Sebastián forced himself upright.
“Go!”” he shouted.
“Get to the girls!””
Alejandro grabbed Rafael's wrist before he could reach the weapon. They crashed into the desk, sending papers flying.
Rafael was older, but desperation gave him strength. He drove an elbow into Alejandro's ribs and twisted free.
“You think you're better than me?”” Rafael snarled.
“Your entire life was built on my money, my blood, and my sacrifices!””
“My life was built on lies you chose to tell!””
Rafael lunged again.
Alejandro caught him and slammed him against the wall.
“Tell me who else you hurt.””
Rafael laughed breathlessly.
“You'll never know all of it.””
Footsteps thundered overhead.
Daniel appeared in the doorway with two armed officers.
“Drop your weapon!””
Rafael looked toward the floor.
The gun lay just beyond his reach.
He lunged for it.
An officer tackled him before his fingers could close around the grip. The second officer secured his hands while Daniel rushed to Sebastián.
“Get an ambulance here!”” Daniel shouted.
Alejandro knelt beside his brother.
“Stay with me.””
Sebastián managed a weak smile.
“You always were dramatic.””
Alejandro laughed, but the sound broke into a sob.
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
“I hated you for leaving.””
“You had every right.””
Alejandro pressed his hand against the wound.
“Don't you dare apologize and then die.””
Sebastián gripped his wrist.
“I won't.””
His eyes moved toward Rafael, who was being dragged from the room.
“There's one last thing you need to know.””
“Not now.””
“Now.”” Sebastián winced.
“The twins' birth records weren't the only documents hidden here. Arturo kept a separate ledger of everyone who helped him.””
Alejandro frowned.
“Everyone?””
“The doctor who forged the records. The official who changed the death certificate. The people who moved Camila. The men who watched Elena.””
His voice weakened.
“Some of them are still working for the company.””
Alejandro looked at Daniel.
“Secure every document in this house. Nothing leaves without being copied.””
Daniel nodded.
Then Alejandro turned back to his brother.
“You're coming home.””
Sebastián closed his eyes.
“I'd like that.””
By the time Alejandro reached the mansion, dawn was breaking.
The police had secured the property, Rafael was in custody, and Sebastián had been taken to the hospital. The bullet had passed through his shoulder without striking a major artery, but he would need surgery and several days of observation.
Alejandro's first thought was Elena.
His second was the girls.
He found them in the library, surrounded by blankets and pillows. Marisol sat beside them, while Elena paced near the window.
The moment Alejandro entered, Elena ran to him.
“Are you hurt?””
“I'm fine.””
She searched his face, then held him tightly.
“I saw the police outside. I thought—”
“Rafael is arrested. Sebastián is alive.””
Elena went still.
“Sebastián?””
“The real one.””
Tears filled her eyes.
For years, she had believed that the family she once loved had been swallowed by death, betrayal, and silence. Now one of the people she had mourned was coming home.
But there was something else in Alejandro's expression.
Something that made her pull away.
“What happened?””
He told her everything.
The recording.
Rafael's confession.
The forged photographs.
The false belief that Sebastián was the twins' father.
When he finished, Elena covered her mouth.
“So he knew,” she whispered.
“Rafael knew where Camila was all along.””
“He arranged her disappearance.””
Elena looked toward the girls.
Camila was asleep against Marisol's shoulder. Valentina sat nearby, coloring a picture of four people holding hands beneath a yellow sun.
“They stole years from her,” Elena said.
“I know.””
“They made her believe she belonged to people who never loved her.””
Alejandro took her hands.
“We can't give her those years back. But we can make sure the rest of her life belongs to her.””
Elena looked at him through tears.
“And us?””
Alejandro swallowed.
“I don't expect you to forgive me for everything. I know I failed you. I know I wasn't there when you needed me.””
“You didn't know where I was.””
“I should have kept looking.””
She shook her head.
“You were deceived too.””
“Then let me spend the rest of my life making sure nobody can deceive us again.””
For a long moment, Elena said nothing.
Then she touched his cheek.
“I don't want revenge, Alejandro. I don't want your money, your company, or your family's name.””
“What do you want?””
“A home where our daughters don't have to be afraid of the people who claim to love them.””
He rested his forehead against hers.
“Then that's what we'll build.””
A small voice interrupted them.
“Mommy?””
Camila stood in the doorway, rubbing her eyes.
Elena knelt immediately.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
Camila looked at Alejandro.
“Is the bad man gone?””
“Yes,” he said gently.
“He can't hurt you anymore.””
“Will he come back?””
“No.””
She studied his face, searching for the certainty adults had denied her for so long.
“Promise?””
Alejandro crouched beside Elena.
“I promise that we'll do everything we can to keep you safe. And if you're ever frightened, you can tell us. You never have to face anything alone.””
Camila considered this.
Then she stepped forward and placed one hand in Elena's and the other in Alejandro's.
“Can Valentina come too?””
Valentina appeared behind her, carrying the drawing.
“I'm already here.””
The girls laughed.
Alejandro looked at Elena, and for the first time since Valentina had called him Daddy, the sound felt like the beginning of something rather than the reminder of everything they had lost.
Three days later, Alejandro attended the first emergency board meeting since Rafael's arrest.
The room was crowded with executives, lawyers, and shareholders. Some looked frightened. Others looked angry.
Alejandro stood at the head of the table.
“For decades, this company operated under the influence of people who believed family gave them the right to control other people's lives. They forged documents, concealed crimes, and used children as bargaining chips.””
A murmur moved through the room.
He continued.
“I won't protect those responsible, regardless of their position or their surname.””
One director rose.
“Mr. Villaseñor, these allegations could destroy the company.””
“Then the company deserves to face the consequences.””
He placed copies of the hidden ledger on the table.
“Every person named in these records will be investigated. Every fraudulent transfer will be traced. And every employee who participated in concealing Elena Castillo or separating her daughters will answer for it.””
Another director spoke.
“And the inheritance trust?””
Alejandro took a breath.
“The trust will be placed under independent supervision until the court determines its rightful beneficiaries. Neither I nor any member of my family will use it to control the girls.””
“You would surrender control of a fortune?””
“I would rather lose every dollar than make my daughters pay for it.””
The room fell silent.
Alejandro signed the resolution.
For the first time in generations, the Villaseñor family would not decide its own innocence.
That evening, he visited Sebastián in the hospital.
His brother was sitting up in bed, reading an old newspaper.
“You look terrible,” Sebastián said.
“So do you.””
“Good. We can match.””
Alejandro pulled a chair closer.
“Why didn't you tell me about Rafael sooner?””
Sebastián lowered the paper.
“I was afraid you would choose him over me.””
“Why would I do that?””
“Because he's your biological father. Because Arturo spent your whole life teaching you that blood mattered more than truth.””
Alejandro looked out the window.
“Arturo was the man who raised me. Rafael was the man who gave me half my DNA. Neither fact excuses what they did.””
Sebastián nodded slowly.
“I should have trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“I'm sorry.””
Alejandro reached for his hand.
“I don't know if I can forgive four years in one conversation.””
“I wouldn't expect you to.””
“But I can start by being glad you're alive.””
Sebastián's eyes filled.
For a moment, the brothers sat in silence.
Then Sebastián said, “There's something else. Gabriel confessed everything. He was working for Rafael when he impersonated me. But he also helped hide Elena because he thought Arturo would kill her if Rafael found her.””
Alejandro frowned.
“Do you believe him?””
“I believe he was afraid. I don't know if that makes him innocent.””
“It doesn't.””
“No,” Sebastián agreed.
“It doesn't.””
Alejandro stood.
“Rest. We'll deal with the rest when you're stronger.””
At the door, Sebastián called after him.
“Alejandro?””
He turned.
“Tell the girls their uncle is coming home.””
Alejandro smiled.
“I will.””
But when he stepped into the corridor, his phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
You arrested Rafael, but you haven't found the original trust.
Another message arrived.
Ask Elena what she was forced to sign before Camila disappeared.
Alejandro stared at the screen.
Then a third message appeared.
Your family has one last secret.
Attached was a photograph of Elena sitting alone in a hospital room, holding a document.
May you like
The date was three years earlier.
And at the bottom of the document was her signature.
