Chapter 11: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
The place Daniel chose was not random.
That was the first thing I realized when Vanessa and I arrived.
An old coffee shop on the edge of town.
Quiet.
Almost empty.
A place where nobody would accidentally walk in.
A place chosen by someone who didn’t want witnesses.
I parked the car and stared through the windshield.
Vanessa sat beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, she whispered:
“I never thought it would be him.””
I kept looking ahead.
“You knew him before me.””
“Yes.””
“Tell me everything.””
She looked down.
“I was struggling after my divorce.””
I turned slightly.
“Your divorce?””
She nodded.
“Before you and I met.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was embarrassed.””
I listened.
“Daniel found me when I was trying to rebuild my life.””
“What did he offer?””
“Help.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because the word sounded ridiculous now.
“Nothing is free.””
“I know that now.””
She looked at me.
“He told me he was your friend.””
“He was.””
“He said you were a good person.””
I frowned.
“Then why would he use you?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because he knew I wanted a family.””
The words landed differently.
For the first time, I saw the full picture.
Daniel didn’t just know our lives.
He knew our weaknesses.
He knew Vanessa wanted acceptance.
He knew I wanted stability for Noah.
He knew exactly where to push.
I opened the car door.
“Let’s go.””
Inside the coffee shop, Daniel was sitting in the back corner.
He looked exactly the same.
Same smile.
Same calm expression.
That made me angry.
Because some people looked innocent because they were.
Others looked innocent because they practiced.
Daniel stood.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
“You knew I would come.””
He smiled.
“I hoped.””
Vanessa walked in behind me.
His expression changed slightly.
“You brought her.””
I stared at him.
“You know what’s funny?””
“What?””
“For years, I thought Vanessa was the person hiding things from me.””
Daniel said nothing.
“But you were always there.””
His smile faded.
“Careful.””
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know the whole story.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel sat down.
“You really watched that video?””
My body went cold.
“How do you know about the video?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“That’s how I knew.””
Vanessa frowned.
“You knew?””
Daniel ignored her.
“Your wife was smarter than people thought.””
I clenched my jaw.
“Don’t talk about her.””
“Why? Because I knew her too?””
The sentence hit me.
“What?””
Daniel leaned back.
“Your wife and I had conversations you didn’t know about.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“Daniel…”
He continued.
“She found out.””
My heart stopped.
“Found out what?””
He smiled slightly.
“About me.””
The anger in my chest grew.
“What did you do?””
He looked around the empty shop.
“Your wife thought she could expose me.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed people should always do the right thing.””
He laughed softly.
“She was a good person.””
The way he said it felt wrong.
Like admiration mixed with resentment.
“What did you do to her?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I didn’t kill your wife.””
The words froze me.
Because I never asked that.
Not out loud.
“You thought it,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You know what happened.””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel, what did you do?””
He finally looked at her.
“You were never supposed to find out.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He ignored me.
“You were supposed to marry Marcus and stay quiet.””
Vanessa went pale.
“Excuse me?””
Daniel continued.
“You were useful.””
The room went silent.
I felt something break inside.
Not because of Vanessa.
Because of the realization.
He had planned this.
From the beginning.
Vanessa stood.
“You used me.””
Daniel shrugged.
“You needed a fresh start.””
She slapped the table.
“You destroyed my life.””
“No.””
He looked at her coldly.
“You destroyed your own life when you believed you could replace someone who was never replaceable.””
Vanessa stepped back.
I saw pain on her face.
Real pain.
Then Daniel turned toward me.
“Your wife discovered the money.””
“What money?””
“The money that was missing.””
My heart raced.
“How much?””
He smiled.
“Enough to make people desperate.””
I stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Before I answer that…”
He pulled something from his pocket.
A small envelope.
My wife’s handwriting.
My breathing stopped.
“Your wife left this for me.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel smiled.
“She trusted me.””
I felt sick.
Because maybe that was the worst part.
My wife had trusted him.
And he had betrayed her.
Then he placed the envelope on the table.
“But she made one mistake.””
“What?””
Daniel pushed it toward me.
“She thought I would never betray her.””
I reached for it.
And before my fingers touched the envelope, Daniel whispered:
“Your wife didn’t just leave a message for you.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She left a warning.””
May you like
Then he looked back at me.
“And it was about your son.””
