Chapter 13: The Person Who Came For Noah
I don’t remember the drive home.
I remember the sound of the engine.
I remember Vanessa gripping the door handle.
I remember every red light feeling like an hour.
But mostly, I remember one thought repeating in my head.
Noah.
My son.
The person I promised I would protect.
The person everyone kept making decisions for.
The person who had spent his entire life surrounded by secrets he never asked for.
I pushed the car faster than I should have.
“Marcus,” Vanessa said quietly.
I didn’t answer.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“If someone is after Noah…”
Her voice cracked.
“I need you to know something.””
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
“Now isn’t the time.””
“It is.””
She took a breath.
“I never hated him.””
I glanced at her.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“You think you know.””
She looked out the window.
“But I need you to understand.””
The streetlights passed over her face.
“I was jealous.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Jealous of a child?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Jealous of a love I could never compete with.””
I stayed quiet.
“She had something with him that I could never create.””
Her voice became softer.
“A history.””
I looked ahead.
“And instead of accepting that…”
“You tried to erase it.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt because it was true.
But before I could respond, my phone rang.
Evelyn.
I answered immediately.
“Where is Noah?””
Her voice was shaking.
“He’s gone.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
I gripped the phone.
“What happened?””
“Someone came to the house.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Evelyn.””
She took a breath.
“He knew Noah’s name.””
The world seemed to slow.
“What do you mean?””
“He walked in like he belonged there.””
My stomach dropped.
“He said Marcus sent him.””
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
“I knew you wouldn’t send anyone.””
My voice became cold.
“Where is Noah?””
“He left something.””
“What?””
“A note.””
“Read it.””
There was silence.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“‘Dad, I’m sorry. I found something Mom left for me.’”
My heart sank.
“What?””
“He said he needed to know the truth.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Noah.
My twelve-year-old son.
Going toward danger because adults had hidden the truth from him.
“Where did he go?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“The note didn’t say.””
I hit the steering wheel.
“No.””
Vanessa reached for my arm.
“Marcus.””
I pulled over.
I couldn’t think.
I couldn’t breathe.
Then Evelyn said something else.
“Marcus.””
“What?””
“There was one more thing.””
I waited.
“The person who took him left a message.””
My blood ran cold.
“What message?””
She whispered:
“‘Ask his father about the hospital.’”
The hospital.
The same word Vanessa had mentioned.
The same place where my wife died.
The same place where secrets began.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“We need to go there.””
I started the car again.
“What?””
“The hospital.””
“Why?””
“Because that’s where this started.””
I drove.
And this time, Vanessa didn’t argue.
When we arrived, the building looked exactly the same.
Same entrance.
Same parking lot.
Same walls.
But I wasn’t the same person who stood there years ago.
Back then, I was a husband begging doctors to save my wife.
Now, I was a father searching for my son.
We entered the lobby.
The receptionist looked up.
“Can I help you?””
I stepped forward.
“My wife was a patient here years ago.””
She waited.
“Her name was Amelia Carter.””
The receptionist typed.
Then her face changed.
“You’re Marcus Carter?””
I froze.
“How do you know me?””
She looked nervous.
“Because someone left instructions.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
She reached under the desk.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Again.
My wife’s handwriting.
But this time, it had Noah’s name.
The receptionist whispered:
“She said you would come here when you finally knew the truth.””
I grabbed the envelope.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“What does it say?””
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
“Marcus, if Noah is with him, go to the place where we first promised to protect him.””
I stared.
The place where we first promised to protect him.
I knew immediately.
The hospital room.
The room where Noah was born.
The room where my wife held him for the first time.
I ran.
And behind me, Vanessa followed.
But when we reached the hallway…
The door to that room was already open.
And inside…
Someone was waiting.
Not Daniel.
May you like
Someone else.
Someone I knew.
