Chapter 9: The Last Days She Never Told Me About

I don’t remember sitting down.

One second I was standing.

The next, I was on the couch with Noah’s hand in mine.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Because the woman I trusted most had been hiding something about the woman I loved most.

Vanessa stood across from me.

Waiting.

For anger.

For questions.

For something.

“You were at the hospital.””

It wasn’t a question.

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because she asked me not to.””

I stared at her.

“My wife asked you not to tell me?””

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“My wife trusted you with something she wouldn’t tell me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She was scared.””

“Of what?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“She thought telling you would put you in danger.””

The room went silent.

Even Evelyn looked shocked.

“Who was she afraid of?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Who?””

She looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“She didn’t know.””

That answer made no sense.

“You’re telling me my wife thought someone wanted to hurt her, but she didn’t know who?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She only knew someone was watching.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Watching her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Because of what she found.””

I looked at the folder.

The trust.

The letters.

The documents.

Everything connected.

“What did she find?””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“She found missing money.””

My chest tightened.

“From where?””

She hesitated.

“From the account she created for Noah.””

I stood.

“What?””

Vanessa quickly raised her hands.

“Not by me.””

“Then by who?””

She looked at me.

“That’s what she was trying to figure out.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Why didn’t you tell Marcus?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because his wife made me promise.””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“She trusted you because she thought you would protect Noah.””

Vanessa looked away.

“And I failed.””

That was the first time she said it.

No excuses.

No defenses.

Just the truth.

I looked at Noah.

He was sitting quietly.

Too quietly.

I knelt in front of him.

“Hey.””

He looked up.

“Is Mom in trouble?””

The question broke me.

Because he wasn’t asking about money.

He wasn’t asking about secrets.

He was asking about his mother.

I held his shoulders.

“No, buddy.””

“But everyone keeps saying things.””

“I know.””

“Was someone bad to her?””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

“I don’t know yet.””

He nodded.

And somehow that hurt more.

Because he accepted uncertainty better than most adults.

I stood again.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“You need to tell me everything.””

She nodded slowly.

“I will.””

“Start from the beginning.””

She sat down.

“When your wife got sick, she started asking questions.””

“What questions?””

“About the trust.””

I frowned.

“She found something unusual.””

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Someone had tried to access it.””

I felt anger.

“Who?””

“She didn’t know.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

I watched her carefully.

Then I asked:

“Why did you destroy the cake?””

Her eyes filled.

The question seemed to hurt her.

“I saw the cake design.””

“And?””

“It looked exactly like the one your wife planned.””

I didn’t understand.

“She planned a cake?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She told me about it.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

The room went silent.

Noah looked up.

“She told you?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She loved you so much.””

Noah looked away.

“Then why did you act like she didn’t?””

Vanessa started crying.

A real cry.

Not the controlled tears I had seen before.

“I was angry.””

“At him?””

She shook her head.

“At myself.””

Nobody spoke.

“I thought if I became the perfect mother, nobody would remember I wasn’t his first.””

My anger softened for one second.

Then I remembered the pain she caused.

“You don’t become first by destroying the person who came before you.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The room stayed quiet.

Then my phone buzzed.

Claire again.

This time, it wasn’t a message.

It was a video file.

No explanation.

Just a name.

My wife’s name.

I stared at it.

A recording.

Something my wife had left behind.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my wife sitting somewhere.

Her face was tired.

But she was smiling.

“Noah,” she said softly.

My heart stopped.

A recording.

Her voice.

After all these years.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“Marcus, if you’re watching this, then the person I was afraid of finally revealed themselves.””

I looked up.

Everyone was frozen.

The video continued.

“And I need you to understand one thing.””

My wife’s eyes filled with tears.

“Vanessa is not the person you should be looking for.””

The room went completely silent.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She looked just as shocked as me.

Then my wife said the words that changed everything.

“The person who betrayed us is someone you trusted long before you ever met Vanessa.””
