Chapter 12: The Warning In Her Handwriting

I grabbed the envelope.

The second my fingers touched it, I felt something I couldn’t explain.

Fear.

Not because of Daniel.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because this was another piece of my wife.

Another thing she had written while knowing she might not be there to explain it.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“You tell me.””

He smiled.

“I already know.””

I hated how calm he was.

Like he was enjoying watching everything fall apart.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was another letter.

Short.

My wife’s handwriting.

The first line made my heart stop.

“Marcus, if Daniel gives you this letter, do not trust anything he says.””

I looked up.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Then I kept reading.

“He will tell you he helped us. He will tell you he protected us. He will tell you he cared.””

My hands tightened.

“He didn’t.””

I looked at Daniel.

His expression hardened.

The letter continued.

“Daniel knew about the trust account before anyone else.””

The room felt colder.

“He knew because he was the person who tried to access it.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“No…”

Daniel stood.

“That’s not true.””

I held up the letter.

“You’re saying my wife lied?””

“Yes.””

The answer came too quickly.

My wife’s handwriting shook slightly on the page.

But the message was clear.

“He will try to make Vanessa look guilty because she is easier to blame.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked down.

Because that was exactly what happened.

The missing letters.

The hidden messages.

The cake.

Everything had pointed toward her.

But Daniel had been standing behind the entire thing.

The letter continued.

“Vanessa made mistakes. She allowed fear to control her. But she is not the person who hurt our family.””

Vanessa started crying.

Daniel looked angry.

“You believe a dead woman over me?””

I folded the letter.

“Yes.””

The word surprised even me.

Because after everything…

I believed my wife.

Daniel laughed.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

“Then explain.””

He stepped closer.

“Your wife was obsessed with finding someone to blame.””

“No.””

“She was scared.””

“Yes.””

“And fear makes people irrational.””

I stared at him.

“You knew she was afraid.””

Silence.

That was enough.

I walked closer.

“You knew she was afraid, and you used it.””

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“I understand perfectly.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Why me?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You were convenient.””

The words hurt her.

But she stood.

“You made me think I had a chance.””

“I gave you one.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You made me think I could erase someone who died.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that was the first time I saw Vanessa fight back.

Not for herself.

For Noah.

I looked at Daniel.

“What happened the night my wife died?””

His face changed.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But there.

“I told you.””

“You didn’t.””

I stepped closer.

“You told me she was sick.””

“She was.””

“You told me nobody could have known.””

“She was wrong.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel realized his mistake.

Too late.

“What did you just say?””

He looked away.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“You said she was wrong.””

No answer.

“You knew.””

Daniel stayed silent.

“You knew she was in danger.””

His silence confirmed everything.

I grabbed the table.

“You let me bury my wife believing she was just unlucky.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“You wouldn’t have understood.””

The anger became overwhelming.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And for the first time…

He looked scared.

He answered.

“What?””

A pause.

Then his face changed.

“What do you mean he has it?””

I watched him carefully.

“He’s twelve.””

Silence.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked toward me.

Then he whispered:

“No. That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you talking about?””

He hung up.

Too late.

Because I heard enough.

He wasn’t talking about money.

He wasn’t talking about the letter.

He was talking about Noah.

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time, there was no confidence left.

Only panic.

“Marcus…”

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

I moved toward the door.

“Where is my son?””

Daniel whispered:

“You need to get home.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

May you like

His voice shook.

“Because someone else found Noah before you did.””
