Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Second Page

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The words hung between us.

“She knew I wasn’t the woman you thought I was.””

Vanessa had spent the entire night defending herself.

She had argued.

She had blamed.

She had tried to make me question my own memories.

But now, standing in my son’s bedroom with Lauren’s letter in my hand, she looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

I stared at her.

“Marcus: What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

“Marcus: Vanessa. What did Lauren know?””

Her eyes moved toward Noah.

That was when I knew.

Whatever the truth was, she didn’t want my son hearing it.

I stepped closer.

“Marcus: Noah stays.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Vanessa: This is between adults.””

I looked at my son.

“Marcus: No. It stopped being between adults when you hurt him.””

Noah lowered his head.

I walked over and placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Marcus: He deserves the truth.””

Vanessa looked away.

For years, I had thought keeping children away from difficult conversations was protection.

But I was starting to understand something.

Sometimes silence doesn’t protect children.

Sometimes silence leaves them alone with their imagination.

I held up the letter.

“Marcus: Lauren wrote this because she trusted me.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Vanessa: Lauren trusted everyone.””

I looked at her.

“Marcus: Except you?””

The question landed.

She didn’t deny it.

I felt my stomach twist.

“Marcus: Tell me what happened.””

Vanessa walked past me and sat on the edge of Noah’s bed.

For the first time all night, she looked tired.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“Vanessa: When I met Lauren…”

She stopped.

“Marcus: You met Lauren?””

Noah looked up.

I had never heard this before.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Vanessa: Before she died.””

The room felt smaller.

“How?””

She looked at me.

“Vanessa: The hospital.””

I froze.

The hospital.

The place where my entire life changed.

“Marcus: You were there?””

She nodded.

“I volunteered there.””

I stared at her.

“You never told me.””

“Vanessa: Because I didn’t think it mattered.””

I looked at the letter.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

“Marcus: She knew you before we met.””

“Yes.””

“What did she know?””

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

“Vanessa: She knew I was struggling.””

I waited.

She continued.

“Vanessa: She knew I had made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

She didn’t answer.

I felt anger rising again.

“Marcus: You don’t get to reveal half the truth and expect me to fill in the rest.””

Her eyes lifted.

“Vanessa: I was desperate.””

That word surprised me.

Not because I believed her.

Because it was the first honest emotion she had shown.

She looked around Noah’s room.

“Vanessa: My life was falling apart when I met Lauren.””

I stayed silent.

“Vanessa: I had just lost my job. I was behind on bills. I was embarrassed.””

She took a breath.

“Vanessa: Lauren was kind to me.””

Noah listened quietly.

Even he could feel the difference.

This wasn’t the same Vanessa from the party.

This was someone remembering something painful.

“Vanessa: She helped me.””

I frowned.

“Marcus: Helped you how?””

“She talked to me. She gave me advice. She told me I wasn’t defined by my worst decisions.””

I looked at the woman in front of me.

“Marcus: Then why would she write something about you?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because she discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she stood up.

Walked to the hallway.

And returned holding a small black box.

My heart stopped.

I recognized it.

Lauren’s box.

The one I thought was gone.

Noah gasped.

“Mommy’s box.””

Vanessa held it carefully.

“I didn’t throw everything away.””

I stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked ashamed.

“I kept it.””

“Why?””

She ran her fingers over the lid.

“Because I couldn’t destroy it.””

I didn’t understand.

“You destroyed the photo.””

“Yes.””

“You destroyed her belongings.””

“Yes.””

“But not this?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

I walked closer.

“Open it.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she handed it to me.

Inside were small items.

Lauren’s necklace.

A hospital bracelet.

A few photographs.

And underneath them…

A folded piece of paper.

My hands froze.

“Is that the second page?””

Vanessa nodded.

My heart started pounding.

I reached for it.

But before I opened it, Vanessa spoke.

“Marcus: Before you read it, you need to know something.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She didn’t hate me.””

That surprised me.

After everything.

After all the damage.

After the lies.

Vanessa was crying.

“She was the only person who didn’t.””

I unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was Lauren’s.

Different from the first page.

More rushed.

Like she had written it quickly.

Like time mattered.

Marcus,

If you are reading this page, it means someone decided you needed to know the truth.

My chest tightened.

I met Vanessa before you did.

I looked up.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I continued.

She came into my hospital room one afternoon. She was crying. She thought nobody noticed her pain.

I noticed.

My eyes moved faster.

Vanessa made choices she regrets. She hurt people because she was scared and trying to survive.

I stopped.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Marcus: What choices?””

She whispered:

I did.

But I also saw something in her.

I saw someone who wanted to become better.

I swallowed.

Marcus, if Vanessa becomes part of your life, I need you to understand something.

My heart skipped.

She will need patience.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

But she cannot become Noah’s mother by replacing me.

I stopped.

The words cut through the room.

No one can replace me.

And no one should try.

I continued.

The reason I am writing this is because I worry about one thing.

My hands tightened around the paper.

Vanessa loves the idea of being needed.

A silence filled the room.

Vanessa looked down.

But love is not about needing someone.

Love is about protecting them when nobody is watching.

I read the next line slowly.

If she ever forgets that, remind her.

Then the final sentence.

And it changed everything.

Because Marcus, I don’t think Vanessa is a bad person.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

I think she is a person who is afraid of losing something she never truly had.

The letter ended there.

I lowered the paper.

Nobody spoke.

Because Lauren’s words had done something none of us expected.

They didn’t make Vanessa a villain.

They made her human.

And somehow, that made everything harder.

I looked at her.

“Marcus: Why did you hide this from me?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because she was right.””

I waited.

“Vanessa: I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“Vanessa: That no matter what I did, I would always be second.””

I shook my head.

“Marcus: So you punished Noah?””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I stared.

She looked away.

Then whispered:

“I don’t know when it happened.””

The honesty hurt.

“Vanessa: At first, I wanted to help him remember her.””

She looked at the floor.

“Vanessa: Then I started feeling like every memory of her was proof that I wasn’t enough.””

I said nothing.

“Vanessa: And slowly…”

Her voice broke.

“Vanessa: Slowly, I started wanting the reminders gone.””

Noah’s face changed.

He heard it.

He understood.

And that was the worst part.

I knelt beside him.

“Marcus: Noah.””

He looked at me.

“Marcus: Go downstairs for a minute, okay? I need to talk to Vanessa.””

He nodded.

Before leaving, he looked at the black box.

Then whispered:

“Mommy wanted us to be kind.””

My heart broke.

Because even after everything, my son still carried his mother’s goodness.

When he left, I turned back to Vanessa.

“Marcus: There is one thing I need to know.””

She waited.

“Marcus: Did you throw away the letter because you hated Lauren?””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

“Then why?””

She looked toward the stairs where Noah had disappeared.

And whispered:

“Because the second page wasn’t the only thing Lauren left behind.””

I frowned.

“What else?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Vanessa: A recording.””

I froze.

“A recording?””

She nodded.

“Vanessa: Lauren recorded a message before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“Marcus: Where is it?””

Vanessa looked terrified again.

“Vanessa: I don’t have it.””

“Then who does?””

She looked at the front door.

May you like

And said the name I never expected to hear.

“Vanessa: Your brother.””
