Chapter 9: The Final Message From Lauren
The phone felt heavier than it should have.
My hand was still holding it, but I couldn’t feel my fingers.
Someone close to our family.
Someone who made Lauren’s final days worse.
The words echoed in my head.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me.
Not with anger.
Not with jealousy.
With fear.
“Marcus: Who is Rachel?””
Vanessa stood slowly.
“Vanessa: What did she say?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know how.
Because every answer seemed to create another question.
Noah walked into the room.
“Dad?””
I immediately turned.
“Marcus: Go upstairs for me, buddy.””
He looked between me and Vanessa.
“Marcus: Please.””
He nodded.
But before he left, he asked:
“Is Mommy okay?””
The question destroyed me.
Because children don’t stop loving someone just because they are gone.
I knelt down.
“Marcus: Mommy loved you more than anything.””
He smiled slightly.
“Then she’s okay.””
And he walked upstairs.
I watched until he disappeared.
Then I called Rachel back.
She answered quickly.
“Rachel: Marcus?””
“Marcus: Tell me everything.””
A pause.
“Rachel: I need you to understand that I can’t prove everything from a recording alone.””
“I understand.””
“Rachel: Lauren left instructions.””
“What instructions?””
“She wanted the message delivered only if certain things happened.””
I looked around the room.
The destroyed birthday party.
The photograph.
The letter.
The secrets.
“Marcus: What things?””
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“If her belongings were removed.””
My eyes moved to the black box.
“If someone tried to erase her memory.””
My chest tightened.
“And if Noah ever felt like he didn’t belong.””
I closed my eyes.
Lauren knew.
Somehow, she knew.
“Marcus: How do I get the recording?””
Rachel gave me an address.
“Come alone.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Marcus: Why alone?””
“Because Lauren requested it.””
The call ended.
I stood there.
Vanessa was silent.
Finally, she spoke.
“Vanessa: You think it was me.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what to think.””
That answer hurt her.
But it was the truth.
“Vanessa: I know I did terrible things.””
She swallowed.
“But I didn’t hurt Lauren.””
I studied her.
For the first time, I wondered if I had been so focused on her cruelty that I had missed something bigger.
“Marcus: Did you know she was sick before I did?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
“What?””
She closed her eyes.
“Lauren told me.””
“When?””
“Before you proposed.””
I stared.
“You knew Lauren?””
She nodded.
“She called me.””
“Why?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“She wanted to know if I was serious about you.””
I felt a strange pain.
Lauren.
Even then.
She was protecting me.
“What did she say?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“She told me she didn’t need me to replace her.””
A pause.
“She said Noah needed someone who would love him without trying to erase where he came from.””
My stomach tightened.
Because those words sounded exactly like her letter.
“Vanessa: I failed her.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I didn’t know how to answer.
She looked toward the stairs.
“I failed Noah too.””
The honesty was painful.
But it was real.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
The address Rachel sent.
I grabbed my keys.
Vanessa looked up.
“Where are you going?””
“To hear Lauren’s message.””
She nodded.
“Can I come?””
I hesitated.
The old answer would have been yes.
The new answer wasn’t simple.
“Marcus: I need to do this alone.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
I walked to the door.
Then stopped.
“Marcus: Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“Marcus: If Noah asks you what happened tonight…”
She waited.
“Marcus: Don’t lie.””
Her eyes filled.
“I won’t.””
The place Rachel gave me was a small office near the hospital where Lauren had been treated.
The same hospital.
The same building where my life changed.
I sat across from Rachel, a woman in her fifties with tired eyes and a gentle voice.
She placed a small digital recorder on the table.
“This is it.””
I stared at it.
“Marcus: How long?””
“Seven minutes.””
Seven minutes.
Seven minutes with Lauren.
Seven minutes I never knew existed.
Rachel looked at me.
“Before you listen, there’s something important.””
“What?””
“Lauren wasn’t angry.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She wasn’t making this message to expose someone.””
She paused.
“She was trying to protect someone.””
I looked at the recorder.
“Who?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
“You’ll understand.””
I pressed play.
Static.
Then her voice.
My whole body froze.
“Lauren: Hi, Marcus.””
I closed my eyes.
A tear fell immediately.
“Lauren: If you’re hearing this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.””
Her voice was weaker than I remembered.
But still warm.
Still hers.
“Lauren: First, I need you to know something.””
A pause.
“I am not leaving because I gave up.””
I covered my mouth.
“Lauren: I fought because of you.””
Another pause.
“Lauren: I fought because of Noah.””
My breathing became uneven.
“Lauren: But I also knew I needed to prepare for a possibility I didn’t want to accept.””
The recording crackled.
“Lauren: Marcus, you are going to be angry.””
I almost laughed.
Because she knew me.
“Lauren: You’re going to want someone to blame.””
I looked down.
She was right.
“Lauren: But please listen before you decide who deserves your anger.””
I nodded even though she couldn’t see me.
“Lauren: The truth is…”
A long pause.
“Lauren: My illness became harder because of a mistake.””
My heart stopped.
“A mistake made by someone who loved me.””
I looked up.
The words repeated in my mind.
Someone who loved me.
“Lauren: They didn’t try to hurt me.””
The recording continued.
“They were scared.””
I thought of Daniel.
Vanessa.
Everyone.
“Lauren: They made one terrible decision.””
A pause.
“And that decision caused me to lose time.””
My hands tightened.
“Lauren: Time I wanted with you.””
The pain in her voice nearly broke me.
“Lauren: But Marcus, I don’t want you to hate them.””
I shook my head.
“Lauren: Hate will not give me more days.””
Silence.
“Lauren: Hate will not give Noah his mother back.””
A tear fell.
“Lauren: The person who made the mistake knows what they did.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Lauren: And I believe they will spend the rest of their life regretting it.””
The message paused.
Then:
“Lauren: Marcus, I need you to hear this part carefully.””
The room felt still.
“Lauren: The person responsible is not the person you think.””
My breath stopped.
“Lauren: It wasn’t Vanessa.””
My eyes widened.
The recording continued.
“Lauren: And it wasn’t Daniel.””
I froze.
Then who?
“Lauren: The person who caused this…”
A pause.
“Lauren: Is me.””
The room disappeared.
I stared at the recorder.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
“Lauren: Marcus, I made a choice.””
Her voice cracked.
“A choice I thought would protect Noah.””
My heart pounded.
“Lauren: Before my diagnosis, I hid something from you.””
I leaned closer.
“Lauren: Something about my health.””
My mind went blank.
“Lauren: I ignored warning signs because I was afraid.””
I couldn’t move.
“Lauren: By the time I told anyone, it was too late.””
The recording continued.
“Lauren: Please don’t blame yourself.””
I started crying.
Because even now.
Even from a recording.
She was trying to save me.
“Lauren: The hardest thing for me was knowing you would think you failed me.””
A pause.
“You didn’t.””
I closed my eyes.
“Lauren: You gave me the best years of my life.””
The recording became quieter.
“Lauren: But there is one final thing you need to know.””
My breathing stopped.
“Lauren: Noah has a right to know the truth about his family.””
A pause.
“Lauren: Including the truth about his biological father.””
The world went silent.
I opened my eyes.
The room felt unreal.
Biological father.
Those words didn’t make sense.
Noah’s biological father was me.
Wasn’t he?
Then Lauren’s voice spoke again.
“Lauren: Marcus…”
A pause.
“Lauren: I’m sorry I never told you.””
The recording ended.
I sat frozen.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Rachel slowly looked at me.
“Marcus…”
I stared at the recorder.
“Marcus: What did she mean?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Instead, she reached into a folder.
And placed a document on the table.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
The first line made my entire world collapse.
*DNA PATERNITY TEST RESULTS*
I looked at the name.
Then at the date.
May you like
Then at the result.
And everything I believed about my family changed forever.
