Chapter 8: The Deal That Destroyed Everything

I stood there with Noah’s hand in mine.

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what Daniel had just said.

Not because the words were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

“Marcus: Vanessa?””

Daniel nodded.

My mind immediately rejected it.

Vanessa had lied.

Vanessa had hidden things.

Vanessa had hurt Noah.

But blackmail?

That was something else.

“Marcus: Explain.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Daniel: I met Vanessa before you did.””

My chest tightened.

Again.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that everyone seemed to know except me.

“Marcus: Where?””

“Through the company.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel sighed.

“Daniel: She worked with one of our suppliers.””

I remembered.

Years ago, before I met Vanessa, there had been a problem with one of our contracts.

A disagreement.

A delay.

A legal issue that disappeared quickly.

I never thought about it again.

Until now.

“Marcus: And?””

Daniel looked at the couch.

“Daniel: She knew about my mistake.””

I crossed my arms.

“Marcus: The money?””

He nodded.

“Daniel: She found the documents.””

“And she threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice became quieter.

“Daniel: Because she wanted something.””

I waited.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Daniel: You.””

The room went silent.

Noah squeezed my hand.

I looked down at him.

“Marcus: Buddy, go sit in the car for a minute.””

He looked worried.

“Marcus: I’ll be right there.””

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

Daniel watched him leave.

When the door closed, I turned back.

“Marcus: What do you mean she wanted me?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Daniel: Vanessa knew you were vulnerable.””

My stomach turned.

“Daniel: You had just lost Lauren. You were raising Noah alone. You were exhausted.””

I looked away.

Because it was true.

Those months after Lauren died were the hardest of my life.

I barely slept.

I barely ate.

I moved through every day because Noah needed me.

“Daniel: Vanessa thought if she became important to you, she could secure her future.””

I stared.

“Marcus: Are you saying she planned everything?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“No?””

“Daniel: I don’t think she planned to hurt Noah.””

I thought about the birthday party.

The photo in the trash.

The letter.

The years of small wounds.

“Marcus: Then what do you think?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I think she started with fear.””

A pause.

“Daniel: Then fear became control.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because they sounded exactly like Lauren’s letter.

Fear makes people do things they never thought they would do.

But understanding someone’s fear didn’t erase what they did.

“Marcus: What did Vanessa want from you?””

Daniel looked away.

“Daniel: She wanted me to help her get closer to you.””

I felt sick.

“Marcus: You introduced us?””

He nodded.

“I didn’t know why at first.””

“And when you found out?””

“I tried to stop it.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“Why?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Because I was already trapped.””

“By the blackmail?””

“Yes.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the street was quiet.

Families were probably sleeping.

Children were probably dreaming.

And my family was falling apart.

“Marcus: Did Lauren know?””

Daniel nodded.

“She figured it out.””

“How?””

“She noticed things.””

I almost smiled.

That was Lauren.

She always noticed what people tried to hide.

“Daniel: She asked me why Vanessa knew details about my mistake.””

I looked back.

“And?””

“I lied.””

“Then what?””

“Lauren knew.””

I was quiet.

“She always knew when someone was lying.””

I looked down.

The woman I loved had understood everyone.

Except maybe herself.

“Marcus: Why didn’t she tell me?””

Daniel’s eyes became wet.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would destroy your relationship with everyone.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel nodded.

“She said you were already losing too much.””

I remembered the hospital.

The endless appointments.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

“Daniel: She didn’t want her final months to be filled with anger.””

I looked at him.

“So she protected Vanessa?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She protected you.””

I hated that answer.

Because part of me knew it was true.

But another part of me was furious.

Because protection had become another word for hiding.

I walked outside to the car.

Noah was sitting quietly in the back seat.

When I opened the door, he looked up.

“Marcus: Are you okay?””

I forced a small smile.

“Marcus: I’m trying.””

He nodded.

After a moment, he asked:

“Did Uncle Daniel hurt Mommy?””

The question broke me.

Because children always found the center of the pain.

I sat beside him.

“Marcus: He made a mistake.””

Noah looked down.

“Did he say sorry?””

I thought about Daniel.

The fear.

The guilt.

The years of silence.

“Yes.””

Noah was quiet.

Then:

“Do people who say sorry get forgiven?””

I looked at my son.

“Sometimes.””

“Even if they hurt you?””

“Yes.””

He thought about that.

“Mommy would forgive him.””

I swallowed.

“Why do you think that?””

Noah shrugged.

“Because Mommy forgave people a lot.””

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

My son knew his mother better than anyone.

When we returned home, Vanessa was sitting at the dining table.

The birthday decorations were still everywhere.

But the house felt different.

Like a place after a storm.

She stood when she saw me.

“Vanessa: What happened?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

I placed Lauren’s letter on the table.

Her eyes went to it.

Then away.

“Marcus: Daniel told me everything.””

She froze.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Again.

“Marcus: Tell me something.””

She waited.

“Marcus: Did you ever love me?””

The question surprised her.

For the first time, she didn’t have a prepared answer.

She sat down slowly.

“Vanessa: Yes.””

I looked at her.

“Vanessa: I know you don’t believe me.””

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

“Did you marry me because of Lauren?””

“No.””

“Because of Noah?””

“No.””

“Because of security?””

Her silence was longer.

Too long.

Finally:

“At first…”

She stopped.

I felt the answer before she finished.

“At first, maybe.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was better than another lie.

She continued.

“Vanessa: But then it changed.””

I looked at her.

“When?””

Her eyes filled.

“When Noah called me ‘Mom’ for the first time.””

I remembered that day.

Noah had been four.

He had looked at Vanessa and accidentally said it.

She cried.

I thought it was because she was happy.

Maybe she was.

“Vanessa: I loved him.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Marcus: Then why did you hurt him?””

Her face collapsed.

“I don’t know.””

That answer was somehow worse.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting she had lost control.

“Vanessa: I started seeing Lauren everywhere.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Vanessa: In Noah’s face. In his habits. In the way he laughed.””

Silence.

“And instead of loving that…”

She whispered:

“I hated that I felt like I was losing.””

I looked at her.

“Marcus: You weren’t losing.””

“I know that now.””

I shook my head.

“Marcus: You should have known before.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Marcus: Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Woman: Is this Marcus Carter?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Woman: My name is Rachel. I worked with Lauren’s doctor.””

My body went still.

“Marcus: Lauren’s doctor?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked confused.

The woman continued.

“Rachel: I found something in Lauren’s medical records that was sealed after her death.””

My heart started racing.

“Marcus: What kind of something?””

Silence.

Then:

“Rachel: A message Lauren requested would only be delivered if someone tried to hide the truth from you.””

I gripped the phone.

“Marcus: What message?””

Her voice lowered.

“Rachel: She recorded it three days before she passed.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at the letter.

Then at the photo from the trash.

“Marcus: Where is it?””

Rachel took a breath.

“Rachel: I have it.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Marcus: Can I hear it?””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Rachel: Yes. But before you do, you need to know something.””

“What?””

Her voice became serious.

“Rachel: Lauren wasn’t afraid of Vanessa.””

I froze.

“Marcus: Then who was she afraid of?””

The answer came quietly.

“Rachel: She was afraid of what would happen when you found out who was responsible for her illness.””

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

“Marcus: What?””

May you like

Rachel whispered:

“Rachel: Marcus… Lauren believed someone close to your family caused her last days to become much worse.””
