Chapter 7: The Person Lauren Warned Me About
The recording stopped.
Just for a second.
But that second felt endless.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Lauren’s voice was gone, but the last sentence remained in the room.
The person you trust the most is not who you think they are.
I looked at Daniel.
My brother.
The man standing closest to the speaker.
The man who had protected me my entire life.
Or at least, that was what I believed.
Noah looked between us.
“Marcus: Dad?””
I forced myself to look at him.
“Marcus: Go sit with your uncle for a minute.””
Noah didn’t move.
“Marcus: Please.””
He studied my face.
Children notice things adults think they hide.
He knew something was wrong.
Finally, he walked over and sat on the couch.
I waited until he was away from us.
Then I turned back.
“Marcus: What did she mean?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Marcus: Daniel.””
He looked older suddenly.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
“Daniel: I hoped you would never have to hear that part.””
My heart sank.
“Marcus: You knew?””
He looked at the floor.
“Daniel: I knew Lauren was worried.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Silence.
Then:
“Daniel: Yes.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
I stepped back.
“You knew someone was hiding something from me.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Daniel: Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
His eyes lifted.
“Daniel: I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty sound.
“Marcus: Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked toward Noah.
“Marcus: Protect him.””
Then back at Daniel.
“Marcus: Protect me.””
My voice grew sharper.
“Marcus: But nobody ever asks if I want to be protected.””
Daniel stood.
“Daniel: Marcus, listen to me.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Marcus: I listened for years.””
The anger I had held back all night finally started breaking through.
“Marcus: I listened when people told me everything was fine.””
“Marcus: I listened when Noah said he was okay.””
“Marcus: I listened when Vanessa told me she was just struggling.””
I pointed toward the recording.
“Marcus: And now I’m supposed to listen when you tell me hiding the truth was for my benefit?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Daniel: I made a promise.””
“To Lauren?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Marcus: Lauren trusted you.””
His face changed.
Because that was true.
“Marcus: And you used that trust to keep me in the dark.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at Noah.
Then lowered his voice.
“Daniel: Not here.””
I immediately understood.
He didn’t want Noah hearing.
That was fair.
But it also made me angry.
Because once again, the adults knew everything.
And the child had to live with the consequences.
I walked toward the hallway.
“Marcus: Noah, buddy.””
He stood.
“Marcus: We’re going home.””
Daniel looked relieved for a moment.
Then worried.
“Daniel: Marcus.””
I stopped.
“Marcus: What?””
His voice was quiet.
“Daniel: You need to hear the rest of the recording.””
I stared at him.
“Marcus: Why?””
“Because Lauren wasn’t warning you about Vanessa.””
I froze.
My eyes narrowed.
“Marcus: What?””
Daniel looked at the device.
“Daniel: She was warning you about someone else.””
The room became silent.
I walked back.
“Marcus: Play it.””
Daniel pressed the button.
Lauren’s voice returned.
“Lauren: Marcus, if you are hearing this, please don’t make decisions while you’re angry.””
A sad smile appeared on my face.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She knew me.
“Lauren: I know you. I know you will want answers. I know you will want someone to blame.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
“Lauren: But before you blame anyone, remember something.””
A pause.
“Lauren: People can make mistakes and still love you.””
The words confused me.
Because they sounded like forgiveness.
And I wasn’t ready to forgive.
“Lauren: The person I’m talking about is someone who made a terrible choice.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Lauren: A choice that hurt us.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Lauren: But I also know why they made it.””
I stepped closer to the speaker.
“Lauren: Fear makes people do things they never thought they would do.””
The recording crackled.
Then Lauren continued.
“Lauren: Marcus, if you discover the truth, please remember Noah first.””
I looked at my son.
He was watching me carefully.
“Lauren: Not your anger.””
“Not your pride.””
“Not your need to punish someone.””
My throat tightened.
“Lauren: Noah needs a father who protects his heart.””
The recording paused.
Then:
“Lauren: Even when the truth hurts.””
The device clicked.
The message ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at Daniel.
“Marcus: Who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus: Who was she talking about?””
Daniel took a breath.
Then said:
“Daniel: Me.””
The room went completely still.
Noah looked confused.
“Marcus: You?””
Daniel nodded.
“Daniel: Lauren was talking about me.””
I couldn’t process it.
“Marcus: What did you do?””
He sat down slowly.
“Daniel: Before Lauren got sick, I made a mistake.””
I waited.
“Daniel: A big one.””
“What kind?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Daniel: It involved your business.””
My stomach tightened.
“My business?””
He nodded.
Years of memories started rearranging themselves.
The company.
The financial problems we had.
The sudden loss of a major client.
The months when I worked twice as hard to recover.
I had always blamed circumstances.
Bad timing.
Market changes.
But now…
“Marcus: What did you do?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I made a decision without telling you.””
“What decision?””
He swallowed.
“Daniel: I used company money.””
Silence.
I stared.
“What?””
“I thought I could fix a problem before you noticed.””
My voice became cold.
“How much?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“Two hundred thousand dollars.””
The number hit me.
Not because of the money.
Because of the trust.
“Marcus: You stole from me?””
“No.””
“It sounds like stealing.””
“I was going to replace it.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
I looked away.
“Marcus: And Lauren knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“She found out.””
“How?””
“She saw the documents.””
My jaw tightened.
“And she confronted you?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“She said I had to tell you.””
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Marcus: Everyone was scared.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Vanessa was scared.””
“Yes.””
“You were scared.””
“Yes.””
I looked around.
“Marcus: And while everyone was scared, my son lost pieces of his family.””
Daniel looked toward Noah.
His eyes filled.
“I never wanted that.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Marcus: But you let it happen.””
Daniel had no response.
Because he knew.
I walked toward Noah.
“Marcus: Come on.””
He stood and took my hand.
As we reached the door, Daniel spoke.
“Marcus: Wait.””
I stopped.
“Daniel: There’s more.””
I turned.
“What now?””
Daniel looked terrified.
Not nervous.
Terrified.
“Daniel: The money wasn’t the only thing Lauren discovered.””
My grip tightened around Noah’s hand.
“Marcus: What else?””
Daniel looked at the recording device.
“Daniel: She found out why I needed the money.””
I waited.
He whispered:
“Daniel: Because someone was blackmailing me.””
My blood ran cold.
“Marcus: Who?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
Then back at me.
May you like
And said the name I never expected.
“Daniel: Vanessa.””
