Chapter 11: The Son Richard Tried to Protect

Daniel walked toward the house with his hands raised slightly, as though he expected Marcus to strike him.

Margaret backed toward the porch railing.

"Marcus, I can explain," Daniel said.

Marcus held up the envelope.

"You arranged the paternity test?""

Daniel looked at Margaret, then at the envelope.

"Not here.""

"That's exactly what you said yesterday. Every time I ask you a question, you tell me we can't discuss it here.""

"Because you don't understand what you're dealing with.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Then make me understand.""

Daniel glanced toward the house.

"Are the girls asleep?""

"Yes.""

"Good.""

Marcus opened the door wider.

"Get inside.""

They entered the study. Margaret remained near the desk, clutching her handbag. Daniel stood beside the window, avoiding his brother's eyes.

Marcus placed the new envelope beside the box.

"Start talking.""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"After Dad died, I found a folder in his home office. It contained correspondence between him and Elena.""

"You knew about their relationship?""

"I suspected something was wrong long before that. But I didn't know the details until I found the letters.""

Marcus felt a sharp ache behind his ribs.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because the letters made it clear that Dad was afraid you would discover the truth and destroy the family.""

Marcus let out a bitter laugh.

"My family was already destroyed. I just didn't know it.""

Daniel nodded.

"I know.""

Margaret spoke quietly.

"Richard asked Daniel to help him arrange a private paternity test. He didn't want the hospital to release the results to anyone else.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"You knew?""

"I worked for your father for seventeen years. I handled his correspondence and helped maintain his personal files. I knew about the letters, but I didn't know what the test would prove.""

"Then why are you here now?""

Margaret looked down at the envelope.

"Because I kept a copy of the original report. Richard asked me to destroy it, but I couldn't bring myself to do that. I thought the truth might matter one day.""

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside were several pages, each stamped with the name of a private laboratory. He scanned the first page, then the second.

The test had been conducted shortly before Sofia's birth.

The report did not conclusively identify a father. It compared samples from Richard, Daniel, and Marcus.

Marcus stared at the names.

"Why were all three of us tested?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because Dad wanted to know whether Sofia could be his daughter. But he also wanted to rule out the possibility that I was the father.""

"And me?""

Daniel looked at him.

"You were listed as the presumed father.""

Marcus's hands trembled as he turned to the final page.

The conclusion was complicated, filled with statistical language and references to limitations in the available samples.

But one sentence stood out.

*The available evidence does not exclude Marcus Hale as the biological father. The relationship between Richard Hale and the child cannot be conclusively determined from the submitted samples.*

Marcus stared at the report.

"So it proves nothing.""

Margaret nodded.

"Not conclusively. Richard was furious when he received it. He wanted a definitive answer, but the laboratory explained that additional testing would be needed.""

"Was additional testing performed?""

Daniel looked away.

"No.""

Marcus slammed the report onto the desk.

"Then why did everyone act as if they knew the truth?""

"Because Dad believed the possibility was enough to frighten him," Daniel said.

"He was terrified you would find out he had betrayed you.""

"And you?""

Daniel's face crumpled.

"I was terrified, too.""

Marcus stared at his brother.

"Did you ever have a relationship with Elena after she became pregnant?""

"No. I swear to you.""

"Did you arrange the test?""

Daniel nodded.

"At Dad's request. He asked me to help him find a laboratory that would handle the samples privately. I thought it was the only way to settle the question without destroying your marriage.""

"You thought hiding the test was better than telling me?""

"I thought Dad would tell you once he had an answer.""

Marcus looked at the report.

"But he never got one.""

"No.""

"And then he died.""

Daniel nodded.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Marcus thought about the years he had spent mourning his father, defending his reputation, and telling his daughters stories about the man who had taught him to build things with his hands.

He had believed Richard's greatest flaw was his inability to express affection.

Now he understood that the man might have carried a secret capable of destroying the family.

But he still didn't know whether Richard was Sofia's biological father.

He still didn't know whether Daniel had hidden anything else.

And he still didn't know why Vanessa had become so determined to control the outcome.

Margaret cleared her throat.

"There's another reason I came here.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Go on.""

"After Richard died, Vanessa contacted me. She said she was helping the family organize its affairs. She asked whether I had any copies of the paternity report.""

"Why would she know about it?""

"Because she had seen the correspondence between Richard and Elena.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Did you give her anything?""

"No. I told her I didn't have the report.""

Daniel shifted uncomfortably.

"Margaret, you didn't tell me Vanessa contacted you.""

"I didn't know what to tell you. She frightened me.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"How?""

Margaret took a breath.

"She said Richard had promised to protect someone. She said if the report became public, a child would be hurt. I assumed she meant Sofia.""

"Did she mention another child?""

Margaret's face changed.

"Yes.""

Marcus felt his pulse quicken.

"What did she say?""

"She said the report wasn't the only record Richard had hidden. She claimed he had made a separate financial arrangement for another child.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What child?""

Margaret shook her head.

"I don't know. Richard kept several private accounts. I never had access to all of them.""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Could this be connected to the baby Elena lost?""

"Possibly. But I can't confirm that.""

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked from Margaret to Daniel.

He had spent years believing the family had fractured because of a disagreement over their father's estate. Now he was beginning to suspect the inheritance dispute had been a distraction from something far more personal.

"Where are the financial records?"" he asked.

Margaret hesitated.

"I kept a list of the accounts I knew about. I can give it to your attorney. But there is one account I never understood.""

She removed a small notebook from her handbag.

"Richard called it the Bluebird account.""

Marcus frowned.

"Bluebird?""

"He said it was for someone who needed protection. I assumed it was a charitable arrangement, but the payments continued after his death.""

"Who received them?""

"I don't know. The account was held through a private trust, and the beneficiary's name was never included in the documents I handled.""

Daniel looked alarmed.

"That account was supposed to have been closed.""

Margaret turned toward him.

"You knew about it?""

"I knew Dad had set aside money for someone. I didn't know who.""

Marcus stood.

"Then we're going to find out.""

He called his attorney and arranged for Margaret to provide the notebook and supporting documents through the proper channels. Daniel agreed to stay and give a formal account of his involvement in the test.

For the first time, Marcus had a clearer picture of what had happened.

His father had suspected he might be Sofia's biological father. Daniel had arranged a private test. The test had not produced a conclusive answer. Richard had died without resolving the question.

And Vanessa had spent years trying to control who learned what.

But the story still didn't make sense.

If the report was inconclusive, why had Vanessa been so certain that Sofia's parentage could destroy the family?

At three that afternoon, Marcus received a call from his attorney.

"I've reviewed the documents you sent," she said.

"The report is incomplete, and we should not draw any biological conclusions from it. However, the financial records may help establish the timeline of your father's arrangements.""

"Can we identify the Bluebird account?""

"We can request records through the appropriate legal process. But Marcus, I want to warn you that the beneficiary may be someone entirely unrelated to the paternity question.""

"I understand.""

After the call, Marcus looked at the old photographs on his desk.

One showed Richard holding Sofia.

Another showed Elena sitting beside Vanessa at a charity event.

He picked up the second photograph.

He had never seen it before.

On the back, Elena had written:

Vanessa knows what happened. She promised she would never tell.

Marcus felt a knot form in his stomach.

Vanessa had not merely discovered the secret.

She had been part of it from the beginning.

That evening, he asked Maya to stay with Sofia while he made one final call.

He dialed Vanessa's number.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"I know about the report.""

Silence.

"I know it was inconclusive. I know my father arranged it. I know Daniel helped.""

Vanessa exhaled shakily.

"Then you know why I was afraid.""

"No. I know why you had information. I still don't know why you used it to hurt my daughter.""

"I didn't want to hurt her.""

"Then why did you send those messages?""

"Because I was desperate.""

"Desperate for what?""

Vanessa began to cry.

"To make you listen.""

"You could have told me the truth.""

"You wouldn't have believed me.""

"Try me.""

She went quiet.

Then she whispered, "Richard wasn't the only person who made a promise to Elena.""

Marcus waited.

"Before Sofia was born, Elena asked me to protect a child. Not just Sofia. Another child.""

Marcus gripped the phone.

"Who?""

"I can't tell you yet.""

"Why not?""

"Because the child doesn't know the truth. And if you find out who it is, you'll understand why I've spent years trying to keep this family together.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Vanessa, this family is already falling apart.""

She whispered something he could barely hear.

"I'm sorry.""

The call ended.

Marcus sat in the dark for several minutes.

Then an email arrived from his attorney.

The subject line read:

*Bluebird Trust — Preliminary Beneficiary Identification.*

He opened it.

The account had been established by Richard Hale shortly before Sofia's birth.

The beneficiary was a child born within weeks of Sofia.

The mother's name was listed in a confidential attachment.

Marcus clicked it.

And the name that appeared on the screen was *Vanessa Cole*.
