Chapter 6: The Second Name
Marcus drove to Caroline's house that evening, leaving Maya in charge of dinner and asking her not to open the door to anyone she didn't recognize.
He hadn't told the girls about Caroline's call.
He hadn't told them about the letter, the photograph, or the paternity report that might change everything they knew about their family.
All he knew was that Caroline had seen a document Vanessa had no legitimate reason to possess—or at least, no reason she had explained.
And the mention of another child made the situation more complicated than he could have imagined.
Caroline opened the door before he rang the bell.
Her eyes were red, and her hair was tied back carelessly. She looked nothing like the confident woman who had laughed with Vanessa at family dinners.
“Thank you for coming,” she said.
“Tell me what you know.””
She stepped aside.
Marcus entered a living room filled with unopened moving boxes. Caroline had recently changed apartments, and several boxes were stacked near the staircase.
She offered him coffee.
He refused.
“Start with the report.””
Caroline sat on the edge of the couch.
“About six months ago, Vanessa asked me to help her organize some old documents. She said she was looking for insurance papers connected to Elena's death.””
“Why would she have Elena's documents?””
“She said you had given her access to the family files.””
Marcus remembered allowing Vanessa to manage some household paperwork after they married. He had never imagined she might use that access to investigate his late wife.
“What happened next?””
“She found a folder with copies of hospital records. Most of it was ordinary paperwork, but there was a sealed envelope with Elena's name on it.””
“Was it the paternity report?””
Caroline nodded.
“Vanessa opened it. I asked her why she was looking at private medical records, and she said she needed to understand something about your family.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What did the report say?””
“I only saw the first page.””
“What was on it?””
Caroline pressed her palms together.
“It said the man listed as Sofia's biological father was not you.””
The words landed with brutal simplicity.
Marcus felt the room tilt.
He had prepared himself for the possibility. He had read Elena's letter and stared at the photograph. He had spent hours imagining what the test might reveal.
But hearing it from someone who had seen the report made the possibility feel like a physical blow.
Caroline continued quickly.
“Marcus, please understand that I don't know whether the report was complete or whether Vanessa had the entire file. I saw one page. She took it away before I could read the rest.””
“Did you see a name?””
“No.””
“Then why did you tell me there was another child?””
Caroline's face crumpled.
“Because I heard Vanessa talking to someone on the phone. She said the report identified a second child connected to the same man.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Who was she talking to?””
“I don't know. I was in the hallway, and she didn't know I could hear her.””
“What exactly did she say?””
Caroline shut her eyes, trying to remember.
“She said, 'If Marcus finds out about Sofia, he'll ask questions about the other child. And if he discovers who that child is, everything will fall apart.''”
Marcus stood.
“Why didn't you tell me six months ago?””
Caroline looked down.
“Because Vanessa said the report proved Elena had betrayed you. She said you would be destroyed if you learned the truth, and she convinced me it would be kinder to let you live without knowing.””
“So you helped her hide it.””
“I didn't take the report, Marcus. I didn't give her the documents. I just—”
“You just decided I didn't deserve to know what was happening in my own family.””
Caroline began to cry.
“I was wrong.””
He paced toward the window.
Outside, a neighbor was walking a golden retriever along the pavement. A car rolled slowly past. Ordinary life continued, indifferent to the fact that his entire understanding of the past had begun to collapse.
Marcus turned back.
“Why is Vanessa so interested in Sofia's biological father?””
Caroline wiped her cheeks.
“I think she knows him.””
Marcus's mind raced.
He tried to recall every man Elena had been close to before her death. Her colleagues, old friends, neighbors. He remembered a few names, but none seemed to fit the strange pattern emerging around the photograph and the letter.
“Did Vanessa ever mention a name?””
Caroline hesitated.
Then she reached into her pocket and removed a folded piece of paper.
“I wrote this down after I overheard her conversation.””
Marcus took it.
Three words were written in Caroline's handwriting.
*Daniel Cross.*
He stared at the name.
“Who is Daniel Cross?””
Caroline looked at him with an expression that made his stomach tighten.
“Your older brother.””
Marcus felt the floor disappear beneath him.
Daniel had moved to another state nearly a decade earlier after a bitter disagreement over their father's estate. They had barely spoken since. Marcus knew Daniel had been married once, but he had never met his former wife, and he knew almost nothing about his brother's life during the years before Sofia was born.
“That's impossible,” Marcus said.
Caroline shook her head.
“I don't know whether it's true. I'm telling you the name I heard.””
“Daniel wasn't even living here when Sofia was born.””
“He visited Elena before the wedding. Vanessa said something about that when she was looking at the report.””
Marcus searched his memory.
Daniel had attended his wedding. He had congratulated Elena, made a toast, and left the reception early after arguing with their father.
But a visit before the wedding?
Marcus couldn't remember one.
He had been working long hours then, helping his father manage the family construction business while Elena prepared for their daughter's arrival.
Daniel had been in and out of their lives for years.
The possibility was devastating.
But it was still only a possibility.
“Did you tell anyone else about this?””
“No.””
“Does Vanessa know you called me?””
“I don't think so.””
Marcus folded the paper and put it in his pocket.
“Don't contact her about this. Don't confront her. If she calls you, don't agree to anything about Sofia or the report without speaking to your own attorney.””
Caroline nodded.
“Marcus, I'm sorry.””
He looked at her.
“I believe you regret what happened. But regret doesn't undo it.””
He left without accepting her offer of coffee.
During the drive home, he called his brother.
The number had not changed, though Marcus hadn't used it in months.
Daniel answered on the fifth ring.
“Marcus? This is unexpected.””
“Did you know Elena was pregnant before we got married?””
Silence.
Then Daniel laughed nervously.
“What kind of question is that?””
“Answer it.””
“Of course I knew. Everyone knew.””
“Did you have a relationship with her?””
The silence that followed was longer.
“Marcus, where is this coming from?””
“Did you?””
Daniel exhaled.
“No.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Then you won't mind answering another question. Did you ever take a paternity test involving Sofia?””
“What?””
“Did you ever submit a DNA sample to a laboratory connected to Elena's medical records?””
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“Absolutely not. What are you accusing me of?””
“I'm asking you a question.””
“And I'm telling you that this is insane.””
Marcus heard movement on the other end.
Then Daniel spoke again, more quietly.
“Has Vanessa been talking to you?””
Marcus stopped the car at the curb.
“Why would you ask that?””
“Because she called me last month. She wanted to discuss something about Elena.””
“What did she want?””
“She asked whether I still had old family documents. I told her I didn't.””
“Did she mention a paternity test?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel?””
“I don't want to discuss this over the phone.””
“Why not?””
“Because I don't know what Vanessa has told you, and I don't want to make things worse.””
Marcus gripped the steering wheel.
“Then tell me what you know.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“I'll come to see you tomorrow. But I need you to promise me something first.””
“What?””
“Don't tell Maya or Sofia anything until we talk.””
Marcus felt a cold sensation spread through his chest.
“Why?””
“Because if Vanessa has found what I think she's found, then the truth could affect more than just Sofia.””
The call ended.
Marcus remained parked for several minutes.
When he finally went inside, the house smelled of tomato sauce and garlic. Maya was setting the table, while Sofia sat on the kitchen floor drawing pictures of her birthday party.
This time, she had drawn four people around the table.
Marcus.
Maya.
Sofia.
And Vanessa.
He crouched beside her.
“That's a lovely picture, sweetheart.””
Sofia looked down at it.
“I didn't know whether to draw Vanessa.””
“Why did you decide to?””
“Because she's still part of the family, isn't she?””
Marcus took a slow breath.
“Families can be complicated. Sometimes adults make choices that hurt other people. But that doesn't mean you have to stop caring about them immediately.””
Sofia considered the picture.
“Do you still love her?””
He had no easy answer.
“I care about what happens to her. But caring about someone doesn't mean allowing them to hurt you.””
Sofia nodded, apparently satisfied.
Then she pointed at the empty space beside Vanessa.
“I'm going to draw a dog there.””
Marcus smiled.
“A dog?””
“A big one. So if anyone is mean, the dog can bark.””
Maya laughed from the kitchen.
“Make it enormous. The size of a horse.””
Sofia grinned and began drawing.
Marcus watched her for a moment before standing.
He had to find the truth about Elena. He had to understand Vanessa's motives. And he had to discover why his brother's name appeared in a secret that had supposedly been buried for years.
But he could not let the search consume the lives of the two children standing in front of him.
Later that evening, after both girls were asleep, Marcus opened the letter again.
He read Elena's words slowly.
She deserves to be loved without conditions.
Then he noticed something he had missed the first time.
At the bottom of the page, almost hidden beneath the fold, was a faint line of handwriting.
It looked as though Elena had started to add something and then changed her mind.
Marcus held the paper beneath his desk lamp.
The words became clearer.
If Daniel ever comes back, please ask him about the hospital.
Marcus's blood ran cold.
Elena had written Daniel's name in the letter.
His brother had been connected to the secret long before Vanessa discovered the report.
Marcus reached for his phone and called Daniel again.
No answer.
He tried a second time.
Voicemail.
Then a message appeared from an unfamiliar number.
Don't trust Daniel. He knows what happened to Elena, and he's been lying to you for eight years.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Before he could respond, another message arrived.
This one contained a photograph of a document bearing Elena's signature.
At the top was a hospital heading.
At the bottom was a line marked *Second Parent / Emergency Contact*.
The name written there was not Marcus Hale.
It was *Daniel Cross*.

And beside it, in handwriting Marcus recognized as his wife's, were four words.
*He was there first.*
