Chapter 8: The Message to a Child
Marcus felt something cold move through his chest.
He read the message again, hoping he had misunderstood it.
Your father stole you from me.
The words were followed by a second message.
Ask him what really happened before you were born.
Sofia appeared behind Maya, still holding a half-eaten apple.
"What's wrong?""
Marcus locked the tablet.
"Nothing you need to worry about, sweetheart.""
Sofia frowned.
"Why are you holding my tablet?""
Maya stepped forward.
"Someone sent you something strange. Dad is going to take care of it.""
Sofia looked from her sister to her father.
"Was it Vanessa?""
Nobody answered quickly enough.
Her face changed.
"Did she send me another message?""
Marcus crouched in front of her.
"Yes, sweetheart. But you haven't done anything wrong. Whatever Vanessa said, it isn't your responsibility to fix it.""
Sofia's lower lip trembled.
"Does she hate me?""
Marcus pulled her gently into his arms.
"I don't know what Vanessa is feeling, but I know that you deserve to be treated with kindness. And I won't let anyone make you feel guilty for being a child.""
Sofia buried her face against his shoulder.
Maya stood beside them, one hand resting on her sister's back.
Daniel remained near the study door, watching the scene with an expression Marcus couldn't read.
Finally, Maya spoke.
"Shouldn't we tell someone?""
"Yes," Marcus said.
"We'll preserve the message and speak to the appropriate people. But first, I want Sofia to feel safe.""
He carried her into the living room and sat with her until she stopped crying.
Then he asked Maya to take Sofia upstairs and help her choose a movie.
When they were gone, Marcus returned to the study.
Daniel was staring at the photograph of Elena.
"Vanessa has gone too far," Daniel said.
Marcus shut the door.
"She crossed that line long before today. Now I want you to tell me everything you know about the baby Elena lost.""
Daniel sat down.
"I only know what she told me. She became pregnant before you proposed. The pregnancy ended early. She was devastated, but she didn't tell you because she was afraid you would think she wasn't ready to marry you.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"That doesn't make sense. Elena told me she had never been pregnant before Sofia.""
"She was ashamed.""
"Or she was hiding something else.""
Daniel nodded reluctantly.
"That's possible.""
Marcus opened the envelope again.
There was something about the letter he hadn't noticed.
At the bottom of the page, beneath Elena's signature, was a faint impression of writing from another sheet.
He tilted the paper toward the desk lamp.
The marks were difficult to read, but one word stood out.
*Rebecca.*
Marcus immediately reached for his phone and called the former nurse.
She answered quickly.
"Mr. Hale?""
"Did Elena ever mention a previous pregnancy?""
Rebecca paused.
"Yes.""
Marcus stood.
"You knew?""
"I knew she had experienced a pregnancy loss before Sofia was born. I wasn't involved in her care at the time, but she spoke to me about it later.""
"Did she mention another child?""
"No. Not to me.""
"Did she know Vanessa?""
Another pause.
"Yes.""
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
"How?""
"Vanessa visited Elena at the hospital before Sofia was born. I remember because Elena specifically asked me not to let her into the room.""
Marcus stared at Daniel.
His brother had gone rigid.
"Why didn't you tell me this yesterday?"" Marcus asked.
"Because I didn't realize the connection until you asked," Rebecca replied.
"I recognized Vanessa's name from an old visitor log, but I wasn't certain it was the same person. I didn't want to make an accusation without checking.""
"Can you confirm the visit?""
"I can check whether the archived log still exists, but I can't promise access to it. There are privacy rules, and I may need to direct you to the hospital's records office.""
"Please do.""
Rebecca hesitated.
"Marcus, there's something else. Elena asked me to witness a conversation she had with a social worker. She was worried someone might try to gain access to Sofia's records without authorization.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"Who?""
"I don't know. Elena wouldn't tell me. She only said that the person knew her family and had been asking questions about the pregnancy.""
"Was it Daniel?""
"I can't say.""
"Was it Vanessa?""
"I don't know that either.""
Marcus thanked her and ended the call.
He turned to his brother.
"Vanessa visited Elena at the hospital before Sofia was born.""
Daniel looked stunned.
"That can't be right.""
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa didn't know Elena.""
Marcus stared at him.
"How do you know?""
Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it.
For the first time since arriving, he looked genuinely frightened.
"Because Vanessa told me she had never met her.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Then why did she contact you about Elena's records six months ago?""
Daniel stood abruptly.
"I don't know.""
"Stop saying that!""
Daniel flinched.
Marcus forced himself to lower his voice.
"You're going to tell me everything, Daniel. If you remember something, even something that seems insignificant, you tell me.""
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
"There's one thing.""
Marcus waited.
"About a year after Elena died, Vanessa came to see me. She said she was thinking about marrying you, and she wanted to know whether I believed you were ready to move on.""
Marcus felt a bitter laugh rise in his throat.
"She asked you for permission?""
"Not exactly. She asked about Elena. About the pregnancy. About your relationship.""
"Why would she ask you?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I thought she was trying to understand your grief. I told her you loved Elena, but you were doing your best to raise the girls.""
"And then?""
"She asked whether you had ever suspected Sofia might not be yours.""
Marcus felt the room close around him.
"What did you say?""
"I told her I'd never heard you question it.""
"Did you tell her about the affair?""
Daniel lowered his head.
"Yes.""
Marcus stepped away from the desk.
"How could you?""
"She said she already knew. She told me she had found a letter in Elena's belongings. She wanted me to confirm what it meant.""
"Did you?""
"No. I told her the truth—that Elena and I had crossed a line once, but I had no proof that Sofia was my daughter.""
Marcus stared at him.
"And she married me anyway.""
Daniel nodded.
"She said she loved you.""
The words sounded absurd now.
Marcus walked to the window, trying to make sense of the timeline.
Vanessa had known about the affair before their marriage. She had known about the paternity question. She had somehow obtained medical records and had contacted parents to build a case against Sofia.
And now she was sending messages directly to an eight-year-old child.
He turned back to Daniel.
"Why would she do all this?""
Daniel looked exhausted.
"I don't know what she wants. But I think she wants control over the family.""
"Control over what?""
"Everything.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That isn't enough. There has to be something else.""
His phone rang.
Patricia Greene.
He answered immediately.
"What's happening?""
"Mr. Hale, I need to inform you that Vanessa has contacted my office with additional allegations. She claims you are withholding information about Sofia's parentage and that your behavior has become unpredictable.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"She sent our daughter a message accusing me of stealing her.""
Patricia went silent.
"She did what?""
"I have the message saved. I'll provide a copy to my attorney.""
"Please do. I also want you to know that Vanessa is asking whether she can seek an emergency order concerning Sofia's living arrangements.""
Marcus felt anger surge through him.
"On what grounds?""
"She claims that you are emotionally destabilizing the child by exposing her to adult family conflicts.""
Marcus let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
"She's the one sending messages to the child.""
"I understand. Please preserve everything and avoid direct confrontation. The court will need evidence, not just accusations.""
"I understand.""
After the call, Marcus took screenshots of Vanessa's messages and forwarded them to his attorney.
He also saved Daniel's letter, the photograph, and the records he had received from Rebecca.
He was beginning to understand that the only way to protect Sofia was to remain calm enough to document what was happening.
Anger would not help his daughter.
Evidence might.
That evening, he sat with Sofia on the couch while Maya painted her fingernails a ridiculous shade of purple.
Sofia held up her hand.
"Do you think Vanessa will come back?""
Marcus took a breath.
"I don't know. But if she does, we'll decide what happens next together, and I'll make sure you feel safe.""
Sofia examined her purple nails.
"Can I still love her if she was mean to me?""
Marcus brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"Yes. You can love someone and still know that their behavior isn't okay. You don't have to stop caring about someone just because they've hurt you.""
Maya glanced at him.
"That applies to adults, too, right?""
Marcus met her eyes.
"Especially adults.""
For a while, the three of them watched a cartoon, laughing at the same ridiculous jokes.
Then Sofia fell asleep against her father's shoulder.
Marcus carried her to bed.
As he tucked her in, she stirred.
"Daddy?""
"I'm here.""
"Promise me something?""
"Anything.""
"If someone says I'm not your real daughter, will you still love me?""
Marcus felt his heart break all over again.
He sat on the edge of her bed and held her hand.
"You are my daughter, Sofia. Nothing anyone says can change the years we've spent together. Nothing.""
She relaxed beneath the blanket.
"I love you, Daddy.""
"I love you more than you'll ever know.""
When he returned downstairs, Daniel was standing by the front door.
"I should leave.""
Marcus nodded.
"We'll speak tomorrow. Don't disappear again.""
Daniel hesitated.
"Marcus, there's something I should tell you about Vanessa's visit to Elena.""
Marcus stopped.
"What?""
Daniel looked as though he were fighting with himself.
"When Vanessa came to me after Elena died, she said she wanted to make sure Sofia would always have a stable family. She said Elena had made a promise before she died.""
"What promise?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't understand it then. But Vanessa said Elena had agreed that if anything happened to her, someone else would take responsibility for Sofia's future.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Who?""
Daniel looked toward the dark window.
"I think she meant Vanessa.""
Before Marcus could respond, Daniel left.
Marcus stood alone in the hallway, trying to understand why Elena would have made such an arrangement with a woman she had supposedly never known.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new email had arrived from the hospital's records department.
The subject line read:
*Archived Birth Records — Additional Documentation Located.*
Marcus opened it.
The message contained a scanned document that had been attached to Elena's file.
It was dated three days before Sofia's birth.
At the bottom, beneath Elena's signature, was a handwritten note.
If I cannot care for the baby, she must go to the person who knows the truth.
May you like
The signature beneath the note was not Elena's.
It was Vanessa's.
