Chapter 7: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

At 6:17 the next morning, Marcus received a message from his brother.

I'm coming to your house at noon. We need to talk about Elena. Don't involve Vanessa.

Marcus read it twice.

Then he looked at the photograph on his desk, the one showing Daniel's name beside the words *Second Parent / Emergency Contact*.

He had spent most of the night trying to make sense of that document. He had searched through old photographs, wedding albums, and saved emails, looking for evidence that Daniel and Elena had been closer than he remembered.

He found nothing conclusive.

But one memory kept returning.

Three weeks before Sofia was born, Daniel had shown up at their house unexpectedly. Marcus had been working late, and Elena had been alone when his brother arrived. When Marcus came home, Daniel was already gone.

Elena had seemed unusually quiet that evening.

When Marcus asked whether something was wrong, she had kissed him and said, "Your brother is worried about you. That's all.""

He had accepted the explanation.

Now he wondered what else he had accepted without asking questions.

At breakfast, Sofia dropped her spoon into her cereal and frowned at the splash.

"Vanessa says I never pay attention," she muttered.

Marcus set down his coffee.

"Well, spoons do occasionally escape their owners.""

Maya laughed.

Sofia looked up hopefully.

"So I'm not in trouble?""

"You're in trouble with the laws of gravity," Maya said.

"They're very strict.""

Sofia giggled, and Marcus felt grateful for the ordinary noise of his kitchen.

He had promised himself that whatever Daniel revealed, he would not let the past swallow the present.

At eleven fifty-eight, a black sedan pulled into the driveway.

Daniel stepped out wearing a dark coat, carrying no luggage and offering no smile. His hair had gone gray at the temples, and the years had carved deeper lines around his mouth.

Marcus opened the front door before his brother reached the steps.

"You have ten minutes to explain why your name is on my daughter's hospital records.""

Daniel looked past him into the house.

"Are the girls here?""

"They're upstairs.""

"Can we talk privately?""

"We can talk right here.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Marcus, please. I haven't seen you in years. Don't make this harder than it has to be.""

"You made it hard when you let me believe there was nothing to explain.""

Daniel glanced toward the staircase.

Then he lowered his voice.

"I didn't know Vanessa had the report.""

"That's your first explanation?""

"No. It's the first thing you need to understand.""

Marcus stepped aside reluctantly.

They entered the study and closed the door.

Daniel remained standing.

"Elena came to me eight years ago because she was frightened," he began.

"She told me there was a possibility Sofia wasn't yours biologically. She didn't know what to do.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"Why would she come to you?""

"Because she thought I would understand.""

"Understand what?""

Daniel looked away.

"She and I had a conversation before you married her. A conversation about something that happened before your relationship became serious.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Did you sleep with my wife?""

Daniel's silence was answer enough.

Marcus struck the desk with his palm.

"You were my brother!""

"I know.""

"You stood beside me at my wedding. You held my daughter. You watched me bury Elena. And you never said a word?""

Daniel flinched.

"I never told you because I didn't know what the truth was.""

"Then why is your name on the hospital record?""

"Because Elena listed me as an emergency contact when she was afraid you might leave her.""

Marcus felt as though the room had tilted.

"Why would she think I'd leave her?""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Because she knew what she had done.""

The words hung between them.

Marcus walked to the window, struggling to control his breathing.

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

Daniel took a long breath.

"Before you and Elena got engaged, she and I were close. You were traveling constantly for work, and she was lonely. I was going through a difficult period after my divorce. One night, we crossed a line.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"How many times?""

"Once.""

"Did you love her?""

"No.""

"Did she love you?""

Daniel hesitated.

"I don't know.""

Marcus turned around.

"You don't know?""

"She told me she loved you. She said what happened was a mistake. I believed her.""

"Then why did she need a paternity test?""

"Because the dates were close enough to make her afraid.""

Marcus stared at his brother.

The affair had happened before the wedding, before Sofia's birth, before Marcus had any reason to suspect the people he trusted most.

"Did you know the test results?""

"No.""

"You're lying.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I swear to you, Marcus, I never saw the report. Elena told me she had handled it. She said the matter was settled and asked me never to mention it again.""

"How convenient.""

"I was ashamed. I didn't want to destroy your marriage.""

Marcus gave a bitter laugh.

"You didn't want to destroy my marriage, so you let me live inside a lie.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"Yes.""

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then Marcus asked the question that had been burning through him since the night before.

"Why did Vanessa contact you?""

Daniel looked up.

"Because she found out about the affair. She told me she had evidence that Sofia wasn't yours. She wanted me to confirm it.""

"And what did you tell her?""

"I told her I wouldn't help her hurt Sofia.""

Marcus watched his brother carefully.

"Did she threaten you?""

"She said she could expose everything. She said you would lose your family, and I would lose whatever relationship I had left with you.""

"You already lost that relationship eight years ago.""

Daniel absorbed the words without protest.

Then he reached into his coat and removed a folded envelope.

"I brought something.""

Marcus didn't take it.

"What is it?""

"A letter Elena wrote to me. I kept it because I was afraid you'd find it one day.""

Marcus's hands curled into fists.

"You kept a letter from my wife for eight years?""

"I kept it because she asked me to.""

"Of course she did.""

Daniel placed the envelope on the desk.

"I never opened it.""

Marcus stared at the familiar handwriting.

Elena's name was written across the front.

"Why bring it now?""

"Because Vanessa said something that frightened me. She told me that if you ever discovered the truth, you would discover what happened to the second child.""

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

"What second child?""

Daniel looked toward the door.

"I don't know.""

"You're telling me you had an affair with Elena, you know about a paternity test, you kept a letter from her for eight years, and you know nothing about another child?""

Daniel's expression tightened.

"I know Elena was pregnant before Sofia.""

Marcus went completely still.

"What?""

Daniel swallowed.

"She told me she had been pregnant once before. Before you proposed. She said she lost the baby.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"I don't know.""

Marcus looked at the envelope.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Daniel,

If anything happens to me, please make sure Marcus knows that Sofia is innocent. He must never blame her for what happened between us.

I know you believe the past can stay buried. But I am afraid that one day someone will use it to hurt our daughter.

If that happens, tell Marcus about the baby we lost. Tell him why I was afraid to trust anyone with the truth.

And please, Daniel, don't let Vanessa get near the hospital records.

Marcus read the final line again.

Then he looked at his brother.

"Why did Elena mention Vanessa? She didn't even know her when Sofia was born.""

Daniel's face had gone pale.

"I don't know.""

Marcus held the letter tightly.

"You're going to stay here until we figure this out.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I can't.""

"You're not leaving.""

"Marcus, you don't understand. Vanessa called me last night.""

The room fell silent.

"What did she say?""

Daniel looked toward the window.

"She said if I told you the truth, she'd make sure everyone knew what happened to Elena.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"What happened to Elena?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, Maya's voice came from the hallway.

"Dad?""

Marcus turned.

Maya stood in the doorway, holding Sofia's tablet. Her face was white.

"Someone just sent Sofia a message.""

Marcus took the tablet.

On the screen was a photograph of Elena, taken shortly before her death.

Beneath it were six words.
