Chapter 12: The Last Secret in the House

We returned to the old house under police supervision.

I hadn't wanted to step inside again.

Every hallway reminded me of what Lily had endured.

The bedroom where I found her.

The kitchen where Vanessa had lied.

The guest room where the metal box had been hidden.

But now there was something else.

A letter Emily had written that Vanessa had apparently kept hidden for eleven years.

Daniels stood beside me as investigators searched the house.

"Where do you think it is?"" he asked.

"I don't know.""

We started with the attic.

Dust covered the old storage boxes.

There were Christmas decorations, children's toys, and several pieces of furniture we hadn't used in years.

I found Emily's old sewing machine.

Then a box of photographs.

Nothing else.

We searched the bedroom.

The study.

The hall closet.

No letter.

Finally, I walked into Vanessa's bedroom.

The room smelled faintly of expensive perfume.

Her jewelry box remained on the dresser.

A row of framed photographs sat beside the mirror.

One showed Vanessa and me at our wedding.

Another showed Lily at her seventh birthday party.

The third was a photograph of Emily.

I picked it up.

It was the same picture Lily had described seeing on the unknown man's desk.

Emily was standing in front of a lake, smiling into the sunlight.

I turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

*Some promises should never be broken.*

I looked at Daniels.

"Can you photograph this?""

He nodded.

I placed it back carefully.

Then I noticed something unusual.

The picture frame was thicker than the others.

There were tiny scratches along the bottom edge.

An investigator examined it.

"There's something behind the backing.""

He carefully opened the frame.

Inside was a folded envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Daniel.

The handwriting belonged to Emily.

My chest tightened.

Daniels photographed it before placing it in an evidence sleeve.

"Another letter?""

I nodded.

"Maybe.""

The envelope was sealed.

Unlike the first letter, this one had a date.

Two days before Emily's accident.

I stared at the date.

She had written it shortly before she died.

Daniels examined the outside.

"There's no indication it's been opened.""

I swallowed.

"Can I read it?""

"Once we've documented it, yes.""

The investigator carefully opened the envelope.

There were three pages.

The first began:

Daniel,

I am writing this because I no longer trust that I will get another chance to explain what I've discovered.

I sat down.

The letter continued.

I found out that Vanessa wasn't simply interested in Lily's inheritance. She has been communicating with someone who has access to our family records.

I believe someone gave her information about my life insurance, my parents' estate, and the guardianship arrangements.

My hands trembled.

Emily had been investigating the financial situation long before I knew anything was wrong.

Then I reached the next paragraph.

I also discovered that the person helping her has been using your name.

I stopped.

I looked at Daniels.

"Using my name?""

He nodded.

There are documents with your signature that you never signed. There are requests made on your behalf that you never authorized. I have copies of some of them.

I don't know who created them, but Gregory Hale has been involved in several of the transactions.

I felt sick.

The next page contained a list of dates and amounts.

Payments.

Transfers.

Insurance inquiries.

Then Emily wrote:

If I disappear, please investigate the insurance policy.

I stared at the sentence.

"Insurance policy?""

Daniels took the page.

"Did you have a life insurance policy at the time?""

"Yes. Through the military.""

"And Emily?""

"She had a separate policy.""

"Who was the beneficiary?""

I tried to remember.

"Initially, me. I think I changed it after Lily was born so the money would go into a trust.""

Daniels looked at the document.

"That's consistent with what we're seeing.""

I continued reading.

I believe someone has been trying to change the beneficiary arrangements. I refused to sign anything.

Vanessa told me that I was being paranoid. Gregory told me that the documents were routine.

I don't believe either of them.

The final page contained a sentence underlined three times.

*Daniel, if you discover that my death benefited someone financially, please don't assume it was an accident until every document has been examined.*

I lowered the letter.

The room was silent.

For eleven years, I had never questioned the accident investigation.

Now there were suspicious financial documents, altered authorizations, missing correspondence, and an attorney who had been involved in both my first wife's affairs and my second wife's custody plans.

I looked at Daniels.

"Was there a life insurance payout?""

He checked his notes.

"Yes.""

"How much?""

"Approximately $500,000.""

I stared at him.

"Who received it?""

He turned the page.

"According to the original policy, the beneficiary was listed as you.""

"Then where did the money go?""

Daniels looked at the document again.

"That's the issue. The payout was redirected into an account established shortly before Emily's death.""

I felt my heart pound.

"Whose account?""

He hesitated.

"An account associated with Gregory Hale's business.""

I stood.

"Are you telling me he received my wife's life insurance?""

"We're verifying the transaction history.""

"How could that happen?""

"The beneficiary change appears to have been submitted using a document bearing your signature.""

I closed my eyes.

Another forged signature.

Another piece of my life manipulated while I was away.

"Did Vanessa receive any of it?""

Daniels looked at the records.

"We've identified transfers from that account to Northbridge Family Consulting.""

My stomach turned.

"Her company.""

"Yes.""

I stared at Emily's letter.

She had tried to warn me.

She had tried to protect Lily.

And someone had apparently turned her death into a financial opportunity.

Before I could speak, an investigator entered the room.

"Officer, we have a development.""

Daniels turned.

"What is it?""

"We've located Gregory Hale.""

"Where?""

"At his residence. He was preparing to leave town.""

"Have you detained him?""

"Yes. But he had something in his possession.""

The investigator placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a small black notebook.

I recognized it.

It was the same kind of notebook Vanessa had used to record Lily's punishments.

"What's that?""

The investigator opened the photograph to a marked page.

There was a list of names.

Mine.

Emily's.

Lily's.

And beneath them, a final entry.

*Final beneficiary adjustment — pending Daniel's signature.*

I felt my blood run cold.

"What's the date?""

The investigator looked at his notes.

"Three days ago.""

Three days before I had returned from deployment.

I stared at the page.

Vanessa hadn't been waiting for me to come home.

She had been preparing for me to sign something.

Something that would apparently complete a plan eleven years in the making.

Then Daniels received a call.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression changed.

"What's happened?"" I asked.

He ended the call slowly.

"Gregory is cooperating.""

I leaned forward.

"What did he tell you?""

Daniels looked at me.

"He says Vanessa wasn't the person who originally planned the insurance scheme.""

I frowned.

"Then who was?""

Daniels hesitated.

"According to Gregory, the person who arranged the original beneficiary changes was someone from your own family.""

My mouth went dry.

"Who?""

He looked down at the notebook.

May you like

Then back at me.

"Your father.""
