Chapter 3: The Man Who Knew About the Bruises
The name on the back of the email was Mark Ellison.
I recognized it immediately.
Mark had been Vanessa's brother.
He lived forty minutes away, worked in real estate, and had attended our wedding. He'd even helped me install Lily's swing set in the backyard.
I hadn't seen him in almost a year.
"What's Mark got to do with this?"" I asked.
Officer Daniels placed the document on the table.
"His name appears in several communications. We need to determine whether he had knowledge of the injuries.""
I read the message again.
It was short.
*Vanessa, you promised me this would stop. I saw Lily's arm last Sunday. If you don't get help, I'm going to tell him myself.*
The date was October 18.
I looked at Daniels.
"Did he report anything?""
"Not that we're aware of.""
I stared at the message.
"He knew?""
"We're still establishing what he knew and when.""
I wanted to drive to Mark's house and demand answers.
But I remembered the nurse's warning.
Don't confront anyone. Don't interfere with the investigation.
So I stayed.
For Lily.
The next morning, I took her to a temporary family residence arranged through the support service. It was a quiet place with a small garden and a room painted pale yellow.
Lily sat on the bed while I unpacked her clothes.
"Do you like it?"" I asked.
She shrugged.
"Is Vanessa coming here?""
"No.""
"Can she find us?""
"The people helping us know where we are. They'll make sure we're safe.""
She touched the purple hoodie Rachel had given her.
"Can I have my rabbit?""
I handed it to her.
She hugged it tightly.
Then she asked the question I had been dreading.
"Daddy, did I ruin your marriage?""
I stopped folding her pajamas.
"What?""
"Vanessa said you would hate me if you knew.""
I sat beside her.
"Lily, look at me.""
She raised her eyes.
"You didn't ruin anything. Adults are responsible for their own choices. Your only job is to be a kid.""
"But she said you wanted a wife more than a daughter.""
I felt something inside me break.
I cupped her face gently.
"I wanted you safe. I thought you were safe. I was wrong about someone, but I was never wrong about loving you.""
She leaned into my chest.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, "Can I tell you something else?""
"Anything.""
"Mark came to our house when you were gone.""
I straightened.
"When?""
"Lots of times.""
"What did he do?""
"Sometimes he brought groceries. Sometimes he talked to Vanessa in the kitchen.""
"Did he hurt you?""
She shook her head.
"No. But he knew.""
"How do you know?""
"One time, Vanessa was yelling at me because I broke a glass. Mark came into the kitchen and saw my arm.""
"What did he say?""
Lily looked toward the window.
"He said, 'Vanessa, not again.''"
My hands curled into fists.
"What happened after that?""
"She told him to mind his own business.""
"And then?""
"He left.""
I breathed slowly.
"Did he ever talk to you?""
Lily nodded.
"He told me I should tell Daddy.""
My heart sank.
"Why didn't you?""
"Vanessa said Mark was just trying to make trouble because he wanted money.""
I looked at her.
"Did she say anything else?""
Lily hesitated.
"She said if Mark told you, she'd tell everyone he was lying because he wanted her inheritance.""
I stared at the floor.
There was an inheritance?
I knew Vanessa's mother had died several years earlier, but I had never been involved in the details.
"Did Vanessa talk about money a lot?""
Lily nodded.
"She said she needed you to stay away longer.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"What do you mean?""
Lily's voice became almost inaudible.
"She said when you were gone, she could finally make decisions without asking you.""
I closed my eyes.
That afternoon, Daniels called.
"We've located Mark Ellison. He's agreed to speak with investigators.""
"Does he know about the email?""
"Yes. He has provided additional material.""
"What kind of material?""
"Messages, photographs, and financial records. Some of it may be relevant to the investigation.""
I sat down.
"Did he know Lily was being hurt?""
There was a pause.
"His statement suggests he witnessed at least two incidents.""
"Then why didn't he call the police?""
"That's something we're asking him.""
After the call, I found Lily drawing at the small table.
She had drawn three people.
A little girl.
A tall man.
And a woman standing far away.
I crouched beside her.
"Who's that?""
She covered the woman's face with her hand.
"Nobody.""
I didn't push.
Instead, I asked whether she wanted to go for a walk in the garden.
She nodded.
We spent twenty minutes watching a butterfly move between the flowers.
For the first time since I had returned, she laughed.
It was quiet.
Almost unfamiliar.
But it was real.
That evening, Daniels called again.
This time, his voice was different.
"Sir, we need you to come in tomorrow. Mark has given us something important.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
I gripped the phone.
"What recording?""
"An audio file from inside your home. It appears to have been made during a conversation between Vanessa and another person.""
"Who?""
"That's the problem.""
He paused.
"The voice in the recording isn't Mark's.""
"Then whose is it?""
"We believe it may belong to someone who was helping Vanessa manage the situation while you were deployed.""
I felt cold.
"Manage what situation?""
Daniels took a breath.
"Your daughter's injuries. The school complaints. And potentially your absence.""
I stared at the dark window.
"Do you have a name?""
"Not yet. But there's one more thing.""
"What?""
"The recording ends with Vanessa saying something about a document she needed Lily to sign.""
I thought about the notebook.
The photographs.
The emails.
Then I remembered the final item in the metal box.
A folded sheet of paper I hadn't examined because Lily had started crying.
"Officer, what kind of document?""
"I can't say until we've verified the recording.""
I walked to the small desk where the box sat.
I unfolded the paper.
It was a school-style form with Lily's name printed at the top.
But it wasn't from her school.
It was titled:
*Statement of Parental Preference and Residential Consent.*
Below the title was a sentence written in adult handwriting:
*I, Lily Carter, wish to live permanently with Vanessa Carter and do not wish to return to my father.*
At the bottom was a blank signature line.
May you like
And beside it, in Vanessa's handwriting, were five words:
*Make her sign before he returns.*
