Chapter 4: The Signature She Was Never Supposed to Give

I stared at the document for almost a minute before I could move.

Lily's name was printed at the top.

Her date of birth was correct.

Even the address was correct.

But the words beneath the heading made my stomach turn.

*I wish to live permanently with Vanessa Carter and do not wish to return to my father.*

There was a blank signature line at the bottom.

Beside it, Vanessa had written a reminder.

*Make her sign before he returns.*

I photographed every page and sent the images to Officer Daniels.

His response came within minutes.

Do not question Lily about the document. Preserve the original. We'll discuss it tomorrow.

I put the paper back inside the evidence envelope.

Then I looked toward the little bed.

Lily was asleep, hugging her stuffed rabbit.

Her face looked peaceful for the first time in days.

I sat beside her until nearly midnight.

I kept thinking about the document.

Why would Vanessa need a nine-year-old child's signature?

And who had helped her prepare it?

The following morning, I arrived at the family-support office shortly before nine.

Daniels was waiting with a woman named Rebecca Shaw, a specialist in family investigations.

She placed the document on the table.

"Have you ever seen this form before?"" she asked.

"No.""

"Did your wife ever discuss changing Lily's living arrangements?""

"Never.""

Rebecca examined the handwriting.

"There's something important you should understand. This document isn't an official custody order. A child's signature wouldn't automatically transfer custody or remove your parental rights.""

"Then why make her sign it?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

Daniels opened his laptop.

"We've reviewed the recording Mark provided.""

He pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Vanessa's voice emerged.

"She won't sign it.""

A second voice answered.

"Then you need to stop asking her nicely.""

I leaned closer.

The voice sounded male.

Vanessa sighed.

"She's obsessed with her father. Everything is Daddy this, Daddy that.""

"That's because you've allowed it to continue.""

"I've tried everything.""

"Then make her understand there are consequences.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made my hands go cold.

"If she signs, we can finally move forward with the arrangement.""

The man laughed quietly.

"And if she doesn't?""

"Then I'll tell everyone she's unstable. Her teacher already thinks something is wrong with her.""

The recording ended.

I looked at Daniels.

"Who was that man?""

"We're working on identification.""

Rebecca folded her hands.

"There's another issue. The document appears to be part of a larger plan. We've discovered that your wife contacted a family-law consultant several weeks ago.""

"About custody?""

"Yes.""

I stared at her.

"Why would she need custody advice when I was already her legal father?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"She asked about circumstances under which a stepparent might obtain residential responsibility if the biological parent were considered unfit.""

I felt as though someone had punched me.

"Unfit?""

"Her inquiry included references to your military deployment, extended absences, and alleged emotional instability.""

I stood.

"She's trying to make me look like an unfit father?""

Daniels raised a hand.

"Please sit down.""

I sat, but barely.

"She told me she was proud of my service. She told Lily I was coming home soon. She sent me pictures of them decorating the house.""

Rebecca opened another folder.

"Some of those photographs may have been deliberately staged.""

She showed me a picture of Lily sitting at the kitchen table.

A plate of pancakes was in front of her.

Vanessa stood behind her, smiling.

I recognized it immediately.

Vanessa had sent it to me on Father's Day with the message:

She's counting the days until you come home.

Rebecca zoomed in.

"Look at Lily's left wrist.""

I leaned closer.

There was a dark bruise partially hidden beneath her sleeve.

I remembered that photograph.

I'd replied with a heart emoji.

I'd thanked Vanessa for taking such good care of our daughter.

I felt nauseated.

"How many photographs?""

"At least seventeen appear to have been taken during periods when Lily had visible injuries.""

I rubbed my face.

"Why would she send those to me?""

Rebecca didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, "Possibly because she believed you wouldn't recognize what you were seeing.""

Daniels closed the folder.

"We've also found that the email address associated with the unknown male voice has been used to communicate with your wife.""

"Can you identify him?""

"Not yet.""

My phone vibrated.

It was a message from Vanessa.

We need to talk. You're destroying our family over a child's misunderstanding.

Another message arrived.

Lily is confused. You know she has always struggled emotionally.

Then a third.

Come home. We can fix this privately.

I showed Daniels.

He read the messages and asked me not to respond.

A moment later, another notification appeared.

This time it was a photograph.

Vanessa was standing in our kitchen, holding one of Lily's school certificates.

The caption read:

Remember the woman who stayed when you were gone?

I locked my phone.

"She thinks I owe her something.""

Rebecca's expression softened.

"You don't owe anyone silence.""

When I returned to the family residence that afternoon, Lily was sitting at the table coloring.

She looked up.

"Daddy, did you find out why Vanessa wanted my signature?""

I froze.

I hadn't told her about the document.

"Who told you about that?""

Lily stopped coloring.

"She did.""

I pulled out the chair beside her.

"When?""

"Last week.""

"What did she say?""

Lily picked at the edge of her paper.

"She said if I signed it, I wouldn't have to be scared anymore.""

My throat tightened.

"Did she explain what it meant?""

"She said I would get a new family.""

I gently touched her hand.

"You don't need to sign anything to be loved.""

Lily nodded.

Then she looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.

"Daddy?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"She said I wouldn't be allowed to tell you something about Mommy.""

My heart stopped.

"About your mom?""

Lily nodded.

"She said Mommy left me because I was difficult.""

I stared at her.

Emily had died in a car accident.

That was the story Lily had always known.

I had never told her otherwise because there was nothing else to tell.

"Why would Vanessa say that?""

Lily's eyes filled.

"She said Mommy didn't want me anymore. And that Daddy only married her because somebody needed to take care of me.""

I pulled Lily into my arms.

"Your mother loved you more than anything.""

"I know.""

She buried her face against my shirt.

"Then why did Vanessa say there were letters proving Mommy wanted to leave me?""

I went completely still.

Letters?

"What letters, baby?""

Lily looked toward her backpack.

"Vanessa said she put them somewhere nobody would find.""

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

It was Officer Daniels.

"We've identified the man in the recording," he said.

"Who?""

There was a long pause.

May you like

Then he gave me a name I never expected to hear.

"Your wife's attorney.""
