Chapter 6: The $2.4 Million Secret

The USB drive was examined by investigators the following afternoon.

I spent those hours with Lily at the family residence.

She had started sleeping through the night, although she still woke sometimes and asked whether the front door was locked.

I never told her she was being silly.

I checked it every time.

That afternoon, she was sitting on the floor building a castle from wooden blocks when Rebecca called.

"Daniel, the investigators have recovered several documents from the USB drive.""

"What's on it?""

"Your daughter's original trust agreement, correspondence between Emily and the trustees, and a video file.""

I sat down.

"A video?""

"Yes. It was recorded by Emily approximately two months before she died.""

I couldn't speak.

Rebecca continued carefully.

"Would you be comfortable watching it with one of our investigators present?""

"Of course.""

An hour later, I was sitting in a small conference room.

The video appeared on a computer screen.

Emily was sitting at our old kitchen table.

Her hair was tied back, and she was wearing the gray sweater I had bought her for Christmas.

For a second, I forgot how to breathe.

"Hi, Daniel," she said.

Her smile was tired.

"If you're watching this, something has probably happened that I couldn't explain to you while I was alive.""

I leaned closer.

Emily looked down at a folder.

"I've been worried about Lily's future. Not because of anything she's done, but because I've noticed someone asking questions about her trust.""

She paused.

"Vanessa.""

My stomach tightened.

Emily continued.

"She has been very interested in the money Lily's grandparents left her. At first, I thought she was simply curious. But then she started asking whether a guardian could access the funds before Lily turned eighteen.""

She lifted a document.

"The answer is no. Not without strict approval from the trustees.""

She looked directly into the camera.

"Daniel, please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying Vanessa has done anything illegal. I'm saying you need to be careful.""

Then Emily said something I would never forget.

"Your daughter doesn't need someone who wants her money. She needs someone who loves her even when there's nothing to gain.""

The video ended.

I sat motionless.

The investigator gave me a few minutes before speaking.

"We've also reviewed the financial documents.""

"What did you find?""

"Your wife contacted the trust administrator several times during your deployment. She requested information about changing the authorized guardian.""

"Could she do that?""

"Not independently.""

"Then how did she get the documents?""

"She appears to have used a copy of a financial authorization you signed before deployment.""

My mouth went dry.

"What did I sign?""

The investigator placed a document in front of me.

I recognized my signature.

At the bottom of the page was a clause granting Vanessa permission to communicate with certain financial institutions regarding household administration.

But there was another page attached.

It contained a broader authorization.

My signature appeared there too.

I stared at it.

"That's not what she told me.""

The investigator nodded.

"We're investigating whether the document was presented to you accurately and whether the additional authorization was obtained through deception.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Did she actually get access to the trust?""

"No. The trustees rejected her request because the trust agreement required additional approvals.""

I exhaled.

Then he turned another page.

"However, we found evidence of an attempted transfer involving a separate account.""

I looked up.

"What account?""

"A joint savings account you maintained with your wife.""

I frowned.

"That account only had about twelve thousand dollars.""

"It currently has less than four hundred.""

My stomach dropped.

"Where did the money go?""

The investigator showed me a transaction history.

Several transfers had been made over five months.

Some were small.

Others were several thousand dollars.

The receiving account belonged to a company called Northbridge Family Consulting.

"What's that?""

"An entity registered under your wife's name.""

I stared at the screen.

"Did she use that money to pay Gregory Hale?""

"We found payments to his law office, yes. But we're still examining the nature of those payments.""

I leaned back.

Vanessa had been telling me our household expenses were increasing.

She had asked me to send additional money during deployment.

She'd said Lily needed tutoring, new clothes, and medical appointments.

I'd sent everything she requested.

And now I was learning that some of the money might have been used to finance a plan to separate my daughter from me.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

You need to stop digging.

I showed the investigator.

He photographed it.

"Don't respond.""

Another message appeared.

Your wife isn't the only person who knows what happened in that house.

My skin prickled.

"Who is this?""

The investigator shook his head.

"We'll try to identify the sender.""

Then a third message arrived.

This time, it contained a photograph.

It showed Lily standing outside her school.

She was wearing her pink backpack.

The photograph appeared to have been taken from across the street.

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.

"When was this taken?""

The investigator examined it.

"We'll need the original image to establish that.""

"Someone has been watching my daughter.""

"We're taking this seriously.""

I called Rebecca immediately.

She confirmed that Lily was safe and that the residence's security arrangements would be reviewed.

When I returned, Lily was watching cartoons.

She looked up.

"Daddy, are we going home soon?""

I sat beside her.

"Not yet, sweetheart.""

"Why?""

"Because some grown-ups need to finish sorting things out.""

She considered that.

Then she asked, "Will I have to see Vanessa?""

"Nobody will make you speak to her alone.""

Lily nodded.

A few seconds passed.

Then she whispered, "I don't want her to come to my birthday.""

I looked at the calendar.

Her tenth birthday was only six weeks away.

"Then we'll make sure your birthday is about you.""

She smiled faintly.

That night, after Lily went to sleep, Daniels called again.

"We've identified the person who sent the messages.""

"Who?""

"Mark Ellison.""

I stared at the wall.

"Vanessa's brother?""

"Yes.""

"Why would he threaten me?""

"That's not entirely clear. But he's requested an urgent meeting with investigators.""

"Did he explain why?""

Daniels paused.

"He claims Vanessa has been keeping something from you about the night Emily died.""

My entire body went cold.

"What?""

"According to Mark, he recently found an old message from Vanessa discussing the accident.""

I couldn't move.

Emily's death had been ruled accidental.

A rainy road.

A damaged guardrail.

A car that had crossed into the opposite lane.

I had never questioned the official report.

Why would I?

Daniels continued.

"Mark says Vanessa told him something shortly after the accident that she later begged him to forget.""

"What did she say?""

"He's refusing to discuss it over the phone.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Then arrange the meeting.""

"We will.""

I looked through the glass window toward Lily's room.

She was sleeping with her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

For years, I had believed the worst thing that could happen to our family was losing Emily.

May you like

Now I was beginning to wonder whether the truth about her death had been sitting inside my house all along.

And the person who might know it best was the same woman who had made my daughter afraid to say my name.
