Chapter 10: The Person Behind the Plan

The phone continued ringing.

Nobody reached for it.

Nobody even breathed.

The name glowing on the screen felt heavier than the call itself.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Say it.””

She looked down.

“Marcus…”

“Say the name.””

Vanessa’s fingers trembled.

Renee watched her carefully.

Noah stood beside Lily, his protective instincts taking over even though he was still just a child.

Marcus looked at the phone again.

The name was visible.

The person calling wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t someone from outside their lives.

It was someone they had welcomed into their home.

Someone who had sat at their dinner table.

Someone who had held Lily’s hand.

Someone Marcus had trusted.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“Your brother.””

The room went silent.

Marcus blinked.

“My brother?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Daniel.””

The phone stopped ringing.

For several seconds, Marcus just stared.

Then he laughed quietly.

A broken, confused sound.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Daniel wouldn’t do this.””

Renee looked at him.

“That’s exactly why it worked.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

Renee folded her arms.

“It means everyone believes the person closest to them is safe.””

Marcus looked back at Vanessa.

“When did this start?””

She didn’t answer.

“When?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Before we got married.””

Marcus felt the room tilt.

“Before?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Daniel contacted me.””

“Why?””

She looked ashamed.

“At first, he said he wanted to help.””

Marcus stared.

“With what?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“With making sure I had a place in this family.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you know Daniel.””

Marcus went quiet.

Because he did know Daniel.

His younger brother had always been competitive.

Always comparing.

Always keeping score.

But betrayal?

This?

No.

Marcus refused to believe it.

“What did he want?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“He thought you had everything.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“Your career. Your house. Your family.””

She laughed bitterly.

“He thought life had given you everything and forgotten him.””

Marcus looked away.

A thousand memories passed through his mind.

Daniel borrowing money.

Daniel asking for opportunities.

Daniel joking about Marcus being the “golden child.””

He remembered ignoring it.

He remembered thinking it was harmless.

Renee spoke quietly.

“Daniel believed if Marcus lost everything, he could finally prove he was the one who deserved it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Deserved what?””

She answered:

“Your life.””

The words stayed in the air.

Lily hugged Marcus tighter.

He immediately focused on her.

No matter what else was happening, his children came first.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You let him do this?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I thought he was helping me.””

“With what?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“With getting security.””

Marcus stared.

“By destroying my family?””

She didn’t respond.

Renee opened her folder again.

“There’s something else you need to see.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m starting to hate that sentence.””

Renee pulled out a printed email.

“This was sent from Daniel.””

Marcus took it.

The message was short.

But every word cut deeper.

*Once Marcus is seen as unstable, everything changes. Vanessa gets control. I get leverage.*

Marcus read it again.

Then again.

His hands tightened.

“Leverage?””

Renee nodded.

“He wanted access to your business.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

“He believed removing you from your own life would create an opportunity.””

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For the first time, Marcus believed her.

Not because he trusted her.

But because her reaction looked real.

She looked horrified.

“I thought he was helping me protect myself.””

Marcus looked at the children.

“And what did you think would happen to them?””

Vanessa had no answer.

The silence was brutal.

Then Lily spoke.

Small.

Quiet.

“Daddy?””

Marcus immediately turned.

“Yes?””

“Is Uncle Daniel mad at us?””

Marcus’s heart broke.

“No, baby.””

He held her closer.

“This is not because of you.””

Noah looked toward the door.

“Dad.””

Marcus followed his eyes.

The front door was still open.

And standing outside, just beyond the porch light, was a familiar figure.

A man watching the house.

Marcus froze.

Renee whispered:

“That’s him.””

Daniel.

Marcus stepped forward.

But Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

Her voice shook.

“Because he knows.””

“Knows what?””

She stared at the man outside.

“He knows you found out.””

At that exact moment, Daniel’s phone lifted.

He wasn’t calling.

He was recording.

Marcus realized.

The man outside wasn’t surprised.

He was waiting.

Waiting to see what Marcus would do next.

And then Daniel smiled.

May you like

Not like family.

Like someone who had already won.
