Chapter 11: The Brother Who Wanted Everything

Marcus had spent his entire life defending Daniel.

That was the part that hurt most.

Not the documents.

Not the fake signature.

Not even the betrayal.

It was remembering every time someone warned him.

Every time Daniel crossed a line.

Every time Marcus made an excuse.

“He’s just struggling.””

“He’s just jealous.””

“He doesn’t mean it.””

Marcus had spent years protecting his brother’s image.

And now his brother was standing outside his house, trying to destroy his.

Daniel finally walked inside.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like he belonged there.

“Marcus.””

The sound of his voice made Lily hide behind her father.

Daniel noticed.

His expression changed slightly.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

Marcus saw it.

And that was enough.

“Stay away from my children.””

Daniel stopped.

“You really think I’m the villain?””

Marcus stared.

“I think you came into my home and helped hurt my daughter.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You told him.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t look at her.””

Daniel smiled.

“There he is.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“The protector.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You always loved playing that role.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You’re insane.””

“No.””

Daniel looked around the house.

“I’m tired.””

“Tired of what?””

“Watching you get everything.””

Marcus stared.

“Everything?””

Daniel pointed around.

“This.””

He gestured toward the dining room.

“The house.””

“The family.””

“The respect.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You think I was handed this?””

Daniel laughed.

“You think I don’t know how hard you worked?””

“Then what is this?””

Daniel’s smile faded.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That hard work doesn’t matter if people already choose you.””

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You were always the one everyone believed.””

“That’s because I earned trust.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“And I didn’t?””

Marcus looked at him.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Daniel went still.

Marcus continued.

“You lied. You manipulated. You blamed everyone else.””

Daniel laughed.

“Just like that?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“At first, I thought she was the only person responsible.””

Vanessa looked down.

“But now I see the pattern.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What pattern?””

Marcus pointed between them.

“People who need control because they can’t handle being powerless.””

For the first time, Daniel looked angry.

“You don’t know anything about being powerless.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I know more than you think.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“When Dad died, who got the company?””

Marcus froze.

The question hit differently.

Daniel saw it.

“There it is.””

Marcus looked away.

Daniel continued.

“Everyone said you were the responsible one.””

“Because I was.””

“And I was what?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“That’s right.””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel said:

“I was the disappointment.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel raised his voice.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend you understand.””

Marcus watched him.

Because for the first time, he saw something underneath the anger.

Pain.

Real pain.

But pain didn’t excuse what he had done.

Daniel pointed toward Lily.

“You know what’s funny?””

Marcus immediately moved closer to his daughter.

“Careful.””

Daniel ignored the warning.

“She’s the reason this all worked.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What did you say?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She couldn’t control you.””

Vanessa looked away.

“But she could control what you saw.””

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“You used my daughter as evidence.””

Daniel shrugged.

“It was strategic.””

The word made Marcus sick.

Strategic.

Like Lily wasn’t a child.

Like she was a piece on a board.

Noah stepped forward.

“You’re horrible.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Noah’s voice shook.

“But I mean it.””

Marcus immediately reached back.

Protecting him.

Daniel looked almost amused.

“Your son has your attitude.””

Marcus glared.

“Don’t talk about him.””

Daniel smiled.

“You see? That’s why you were always the favorite.””

Marcus’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

Another message.

From an unknown number.

A video file.

He opened it.

The screen showed Daniel entering the house earlier.

But the timestamp was from weeks ago.

Marcus watched.

Daniel and Vanessa sitting at the kitchen table.

Planning.

Talking.

Laughing.

Then Daniel said something that made Marcus’s blood run cold.

“We don’t need Marcus to disappear.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa asked:

“Then what?””

Daniel smiled.

“We just need everyone to believe he did.””

Marcus stopped the video.

The room went silent.

He looked at Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

And finally understood.

This was never about taking his house.

Or his money.

Or his custody.

It was about replacing him.

Daniel looked at him.

“You finally understand.””

Marcus put the phone down.

“No.””

Daniel frowned.

“I understand something else.””

“What?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You underestimated me.””

Daniel smiled.

“Did I?””

Then the lights suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

And in the silence, Marcus heard Vanessa whisper:

“Daniel…”

May you like

A second later, the back door opened.

Someone else walked inside.
