Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t His
The paper shook in Marcus’s hand.
For a few seconds, he couldn’t understand what he was looking at.
The letters.
The date.
The signature.
Everything looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Like something from his own life.
But impossible.
Because he had never signed it.
“What is this?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus looked at the document again.
At the top was a legal heading.
At the bottom was his name.
His signature.
A perfect copy.
No hesitation.
No mistake.
Like someone had practiced it.
Marcus slowly looked up.
“Vanessa.””
She stayed silent.
“Explain.””
Her jaw tightened.
“I can explain.””
“Then do it.””
She glanced at Lily and Noah.
“Not in front of them.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“Now you care about what they hear?””
Vanessa flinched.
That was the first time he had ever seen his words hurt her.
But he didn’t feel satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Because his children had been standing in this room carrying secrets while the adults argued about appearances.
Marcus walked toward the table.
He placed the document down.
Noah immediately leaned forward.
“What is it?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t know how.
How do you explain to a ten-year-old that someone might have forged your signature?
How do you explain that the person you trusted most might have been planning something behind your back?
Lily touched his sleeve.
“Daddy?””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes, baby?””
“Are you mad at me?””
The question broke something inside him.
“What?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Vanessa said…”
She stopped.
Marcus lowered himself.
“What did she say?””
Lily looked scared.
Noah answered for her.
“She said you were tired of taking care of us.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Noah looked down.
“She said one day you would leave because we were too much.””
The room went silent.
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
He looked at Lily.
“Did you believe that?””
The little girl nodded.
“Sometimes.””
Marcus immediately pulled her into his arms.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Never.””
Lily held onto him.
Noah looked away, pretending not to cry.
Vanessa watched them.
And for a brief moment, something like regret crossed her face.
Then it disappeared.
Marcus noticed.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Why what?””
“Why would you make them afraid I would leave?””
She shook her head.
“You’re acting like everything is simple.””
“Then make it complicated.””
Vanessa looked at the document.
“You weren’t always home.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“I was the one here.””
“Yes.””
“I carried the responsibility.””
Marcus stared.
“And that gave you the right to do this?””
Her expression hardened.
“You have no idea what pressure feels like.””
Marcus looked around the kitchen.
At the hidden food.
The notes.
The documents.
“This isn’t pressure.””
He pointed at the refrigerator.
“This is control.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You think you know everything now.””
Marcus said nothing.
Because he realized something.
She wasn’t scared because he found the food.
She wasn’t scared because he found the notebook.
She was scared because he found evidence.
Evidence that suggested this had been planned.
Marcus picked up the document again.
“Where did this come from?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Who made this?””
Silence.
Marcus looked toward Noah.
“Did you know about this?””
Noah shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you know about the box?””
“No.””
Lily whispered:
“I knew about the fridge.””
Everyone looked at her.
Marcus softened.
“What do you mean?””
Lily rubbed her fingers together nervously.
“Sometimes I heard Vanessa talking.””
“To who?””
Lily looked toward the hallway.
“She talked on the phone.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Lily.””
Marcus raised his hand.
“Let her speak.””
The little girl continued.
“She said everything was almost ready.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“Almost ready for what?””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa’s face became unreadable.
Marcus looked at the document again.
The fake signature.
The hidden plans.
The strange notes.
A question formed in his mind.
Not just why Vanessa had been hurting Lily.
But what she was preparing to do next.
Then his phone rang.
The sound cut through the room.
Everyone looked at it.
Marcus checked the screen.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then he saw the message that came in seconds later.
A photo.
His house.
Taken from outside.
And underneath it, one sentence:
“Ask Vanessa why she needed your signature.””
Marcus looked up.
Vanessa was already staring at his phone.
May you like
And she whispered:
“Who sent that?””
