Chapter 12: The Last Person They Expected

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But it was enough.

Enough time for everyone to move.

Enough time for fear to take over.

Marcus immediately reached for Lily.

“Stay behind me.””

Noah grabbed his sister’s hand.

The emergency lights from the kitchen flickered on, casting the room in a dim glow.

Marcus looked toward the back door.

A figure stood there.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone Vanessa recognized immediately.

Her face went pale.

“No…”

Marcus looked at her.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The person stepped forward.

A woman.

Professional clothes.

Calm expression.

A folder in her hand.

Marcus stared.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Vanessa.

Then at Daniel.

“You both made a mess.””

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

“You weren’t supposed to come here.””

She smiled.

“And you weren’t supposed to get caught.””

Marcus looked between them.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

“How many people are involved?””

Nobody answered.

The woman walked toward the table.

She placed the folder down.

“I’m here to end this.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that right before making things worse.””

She looked at him.

“My name is Claire.””

Renee stepped forward.

“You.””

Claire looked at her.

“You’re still trying to fix your mistake?””

Renee’s expression hardened.

“You were part of it.””

Marcus looked at Renee.

“You know her?””

Renee nodded.

“She created the original documents.””

Marcus felt numb.

“How many people knew?””

Claire answered calmly.

“Enough.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“You said nobody else would know.””

Claire looked at her.

“That was before you lost control.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re blaming her?””

Claire looked at him.

“I’m blaming both of you.””

Marcus watched them.

And suddenly, something became clear.

Vanessa and Daniel weren’t partners anymore.

They were scared of each other.

Claire opened the folder.

“You want the truth?””

Marcus said nothing.

She continued.

“Vanessa wasn’t supposed to hurt Lily.””

Vanessa looked up.

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Claire continued.

“The original plan was emotional manipulation.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“Explain.””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“She was supposed to make you look distant. She was supposed to create conflict between you and your children.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

His stomach turned.

“But the food?””

Vanessa whispered:

“I lost control.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You made choices.””

Vanessa looked away.

Claire nodded.

“Exactly.””

Daniel shook his head.

“This isn’t what we agreed on.””

Claire turned.

“You agreed to whatever helped you win.””

Daniel went silent.

Marcus looked at the three people in front of him.

A plan.

Years of trust destroyed.

All because they wanted something from him.

Claire pushed the folder toward him.

“This contains everything.””

Marcus didn’t touch it.

“Why give it to me?””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“Because she was about to make me the next person she blamed.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I wouldn’t.””

Claire laughed.

“You already did.””

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were messages.

Emails.

Recordings.

And then he saw one message that made him stop.

It was from Vanessa.

Sent weeks earlier.

The recipient was Daniel.

The message was simple.

*I can’t do this anymore. Marcus loves them too much. He’s going to find out.*

Marcus stared.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You wanted to stop?””

She nodded slowly.

A tear fell.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“Because by then…”

She swallowed.

“I was afraid.””

Marcus looked at her.

Afraid of what?

The answer came from Claire.

“Afraid that if she told the truth, everyone would know she chose the wrong people.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Then Noah.

Then the documents.

He had spent the night searching for the villain.

But now he understood something.

There wasn’t one person who destroyed his family.

There were choices.

One after another.

And everyone made them.

Marcus closed the folder.

“Tomorrow morning, I’m taking my children somewhere safe.””

Vanessa’s face broke.

“Marcus.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

She stopped.

“I don’t hate you.””

The words surprised her.

“But I don’t trust you.””

Lily held his hand.

Noah stood beside him.

For the first time all night, Marcus felt certain.

Then his phone rang.

Not a message.

Not an unknown number.

A call.

He looked at the screen.

His lawyer.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end was urgent.

“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.””

Marcus stepped away.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“We received a filing this morning.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

The room went still.

“What filing?””

His lawyer’s voice lowered.

“Someone officially submitted a request for emergency custody.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“But who?””

The answer came.

And it was worse than he expected.

“Marcus…”

His lawyer hesitated.

“It was filed under your name.””

Marcus froze.

May you like

Because someone hadn’t just planned to take his children.

Someone had already started pretending to be him.
