Chapter 10: The Daughter Behind the Door

“HE’S LYING!””

Amara’s scream shook the house.

Maya stood inches from the front door, one hand hovering over the deadbolt.

Behind her, Marcus whispered, “Nobody moves.””

Daniel's voice came through the wood.

“Maya, think carefully.””

Amara pounded on the door.

“Open it!””

Daniel laughed softly.

“She doesn't want you to know what she did.””

Maya turned toward Sarah.

“What is he talking about?””

Sarah's face had gone completely pale.

“I don't know.””

Daniel answered for her.

“She knows.””

Sarah stared at the door.

“Daniel, stop.””

“You're still protecting her?””

“She's my daughter.””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“She isn't.””

Maya's stomach dropped.

Amara screamed again.

“I'm your sister!””

Maya looked at Marcus.

Then at Sarah.

Then at the door.

She unlocked it.

Marcus grabbed her shoulder.

“Maya—”

“I need to know.””

She opened the door.

Amara stumbled inside.

Maya froze.

Up close, the resemblance was impossible to deny.

The same eyes.

The same shape of her mouth.

The same tiny crease between the eyebrows when she was frightened.

Amara looked at Maya.

Neither spoke.

Then Amara whispered,

“It's really you.””

Maya started crying.

“So are you.””

They stepped toward each other.

Then Amara stopped.

“Don't.””

Maya frowned.

“Don't what?””

“Touch me yet.””

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

He stood several yards away beneath the streetlight.

Calm.

Smiling.

Marcus stepped between them.

“Get off my property.””

Daniel didn't move.

“You still don't understand.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“I understand enough.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Ask her where she was tonight.””

Maya turned toward Amara.

“Where were you?””

Amara's face tightened.

“With him.””

“Why?””

“He found me three days ago.””

Daniel laughed.

“Found her?””

Amara glared at him.

“He kidnapped me.””

Daniel's smile vanished.

Maya stepped closer.

“Why did you tell me not to bring the trust papers?””

“Because he'll kill you if you do.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She doesn't know what she's saying.””

Amara pulled a folded document from her jacket.

“I found this in his car.””

She handed it to Maya.

Maya opened it.

It was a contract.

At the bottom were two signature lines.

*MAYA SARAH WRIGHT*

*AMARA SARAH WRIGHT*

Both were blank.

Beside them was a third name.

*DANIEL CARTER — TRUSTEE*

Marcus stared.

“He forged the original trustee appointment.””

Sarah looked at the document.

“And if both daughters sign…”

“He controls everything,” Marcus said.

Daniel finally stepped forward.

“You're all very clever.””

Marcus moved toward him.

“You're done.””

Daniel smiled.

“No.””

He pulled out his phone.

“I'm just getting started.””

He pressed a button.

Maya's phone buzzed.

A video appeared.

She watched herself entering the kitchen earlier that day.

Another camera angle showed the office.

Another showed them at the warehouse.

Daniel had been watching them the entire time.

Maya looked up.

“You've been following us.””

“I've been protecting my investment.””

Amara whispered,

“That's what he calls people.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You should be grateful.””

Amara stepped forward.

“You kept me locked up for seventeen years.””

“I kept you alive.””

“You stole my childhood.””

“I saved your life.””

Maya suddenly understood.

“That's why you kept saying you saved her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You're finally listening.””

Maya's voice was cold.

“You didn't save her.””

“No?””

“You saved yourself.””

For the first time, Daniel's expression cracked.

Marcus saw it.

“So that's it.””

Daniel stared at him.

Marcus continued.

“You weren't protecting Amara. You were protecting the trust.””

Daniel said nothing.

Sarah stepped forward.

“And Evelyn knew.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“She knew everything.””

“She tried to expose you.””

“She betrayed me.””

“She saved my daughter.””

Daniel laughed.

“Your daughter?””

He pointed at Amara.

“Ask her what she remembers about the night of the fire.””

Amara's face changed.

Maya looked at her.

“What do you remember?””

Amara swallowed.

“Smoke.””

Sarah's eyes filled.

“A hospital room.””

Amara nodded.

“Someone carrying me.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Then Amara looked at Vanessa.

“Her.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Maya stared.

“You carried her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I did.””

Amara's eyes filled with tears.

“You told me to be quiet.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I was trying to save you.””

“You gave me to Evelyn.””

“Yes.””

“Then you told Daniel where we were.””

Vanessa shook her head desperately.

“No. I never did.””

Amara looked at Maya.

“She didn't.””

Daniel suddenly stepped backward.

Marcus noticed.

“You're afraid.””

Daniel glared at him.

“Shut up.””

Marcus smiled bitterly.

“That's the first honest reaction you've had all night.””

Maya looked at Daniel.

“Evelyn knew you were lying.””

Daniel said nothing.

“She kept Amara safe.””

“Yes.””

“Until she died.””

His expression changed.

Maya continued.

“And then you tried to find her.””

“I found her.””

“No.””

Maya lifted the contract.

“You found the trust.””

Daniel's eyes locked onto the document.

Maya smiled through her tears.

“And you made one mistake.””

“What?””

“You assumed I was going to sign.””

Daniel took a step forward.

Marcus immediately raised his phone.

“I recorded everything.””

Daniel stopped.

Marcus held up the screen.

“The entire conversation.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“You think that matters?””

Sarah answered.

“It does now.””

She held up her own phone.

“I called the police before we opened the door.””

Daniel looked toward the street.

Red and blue lights appeared in the distance.

His expression collapsed.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You're finished.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You think they won't come after you too?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

She looked at Maya.

“I'll tell them everything.””

Daniel's voice became vicious.

“You'll lose everything.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I already did.””

Police cars stopped outside.

Officers rushed toward the house.

Daniel didn't run.

He simply stared at Maya.

“You have no idea what you've inherited.””

Maya held Amara's hand.

“I inherited my sister.””

Daniel was handcuffed.

As the officers led him away, Marcus stood silently in the doorway.

Sarah came beside him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Marcus looked at her.

“I should have found you.””

Sarah shook her head.

“You were lied to.””

“I still should have looked harder.””

She touched his arm.

“We have time now.””

Marcus looked at Maya and Amara.

The two girls sat together on the kitchen floor, comparing the tiny scars on their hands, laughing through tears at how alike they were.

Maya looked up.

“Mom?””

Sarah froze.

Maya smiled.

“Come here.””

Sarah crossed the room.

She knelt beside her daughters.

For the first time in seventeen years, all three were together.

Vanessa stood alone near the counter.

Maya looked at her.

“You should tell the truth.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I will.””

Then Maya noticed something on the marble island.

The old photograph.

The one showing the two babies.

She picked it up.

On the back, beneath the words *ONE OF YOU WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE*, another sentence had been revealed.

It had been hidden beneath a strip of old tape.

Maya peeled it away.

Her breath caught.

*BUT BOTH OF YOU DID.*

She looked at Amara.

Amara smiled.

And Maya finally understood the truth that had survived every lie:

Her mother hadn't abandoned her.

Her father hadn't chosen another family.

Her sister hadn't died.

The people who had betrayed them had spent seventeen years trying to make two daughters disappear.

They had failed.

May you like

Because the one thing they could never erase was the proof that Maya and Amara had survived together.

And this time, nobody was taking either of them away.
