Chapter 8: The Original Betrayal

Maya couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

Two babies.

Two identical faces.

One secret.

One missing piece.

Marcus stood beside her, breathing hard after running into the empty street.

Sarah took the photograph.

Her hands immediately began shaking.

“I remember this.””

Maya looked at her.

“You remember?””

Sarah nodded.

“This was taken the morning after you were born.””

Marcus frowned.

“No.””

Sarah looked at him.

“You weren't there.””

His face tightened.

“I was at the hospital.””

“No.””

“You told me to leave.””

“I told you to go home.””

“Why?””

Sarah looked down.

“Because someone had already tried to take Maya.””

Marcus went silent.

Maya looked between them.

“Who?””

Sarah's eyes filled.

“Your grandfather.””

Maya stared.

“My grandfather?””

“He wanted the trust.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father hated Sarah.””

“He hated what Sarah's father left her.””

Sarah touched the photograph.

“When your grandfather learned I was pregnant, he demanded a paternity test.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I never knew.””

“Because he threatened me.””

“With what?””

“He said if I refused, he'd make sure you lost everything.””

Maya whispered,

“And then I was born.””

Sarah nodded.

“Two babies were born.””

She looked at Marcus.

“And your father discovered the trust would belong to both girls.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“He couldn't have it.””

“No.””

Sarah's voice trembled.

“He wanted one child erased from the paperwork.””

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“And Vanessa helped.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I was there.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You knew?””

“I knew about the plan.””

“You were twenty-four.””

“I was young.””

“You were old enough to know stealing a baby was wrong.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Yes.””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because Daniel told me they were going to kill you.””

Maya shook her head.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it's true.””

“Then why didn't you call the police?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“Why?””

Vanessa finally whispered,

“Because I was afraid of my own father.””

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

“Your father wasn't the mastermind.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.””

Sarah swallowed.

“Who was?””

Vanessa pointed at Marcus.

“Your father.””

Marcus stared at her.

“My father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He arranged everything.””

Marcus backed away.

“No.””

“I have proof.””

She pulled a flash drive from her pocket.

“I stole this from Daniel.””

Marcus stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Security footage from the hospital.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“Seventeen years ago?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Daniel kept copies.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

“Play it.””

Marcus took the drive.

They returned to the SUV.

He plugged it into his laptop.

The footage appeared.

A hospital corridor.

Grainy.

Timestamped.

The night Maya and Amara were born.

A young Vanessa appeared.

Then Daniel.

Then an older man.

Marcus's father.

Maya leaned closer.

Her grandfather carried a baby carrier.

Sarah's breathing stopped.

“That’s Amara.””

Marcus stared at the screen.

“No.””

The footage continued.

His father handed the carrier to Daniel.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She took Maya from a nurse.

The screen froze.

Maya whispered,

“They switched us.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I tried to stop them.””

Sarah looked at her.

“But you didn't.””

“I couldn't.””

The footage resumed.

Daniel carried Amara away.

Marcus's father walked in the opposite direction.

Then something unexpected happened.

A nurse entered the frame.

She wasn't part of the original plan.

She stopped Daniel.

They argued.

The nurse grabbed the carrier.

Daniel shoved her.

The screen shook.

Then the footage cut out.

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“What happened next?””

Vanessa's face had gone pale.

“The nurse survived.””

“Who was she?””

Vanessa looked at Sarah.

“Evelyn Carter.””

Sarah's eyes widened.

“The social worker.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She took Amara.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

“She discovered what your father had done.””

Maya looked confused.

“Then why was Amara arrested?””

Vanessa's voice became quiet.

“Because Daniel blamed the fire on her.””

“What fire?””

“The hospital archive room.””

Marcus's eyes widened.

“He burned the records.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Evelyn tried to protect Amara.””

Sarah whispered,

“And failed.””

Maya stared at the frozen screen.

“So Amara was never the criminal.””

“No,” Vanessa said.

“She was evidence.””

A notification appeared on Marcus's laptop.

A new file had been uploaded.

Marcus opened it.

A scanned document appeared.

At the top:

*AMARA WRIGHT — ADOPTION TRANSFER*

Maya leaned closer.

Then she saw the adoptive parents' names.

Her eyes widened.

“Wait.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Maya pointed.

“The last name.””

Marcus read it.

*CARTER.*

Sarah's face went blank.

“Evelyn adopted her.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She saved her.””

Maya stared at the document.

“Then where is Evelyn now?””

Vanessa whispered,

“Dead.””

Sarah's eyes snapped toward her.

“No.””

“She died eight years ago.””

Maya looked back at the file.

“There has to be someone who knows where Amara went.””

Marcus scrolled down.

A final line appeared.

*Emergency guardian: Daniel Carter.*

Marcus froze.

“Carter?””

Sarah stared.

“Daniel wasn't Vanessa's brother.””

Vanessa slowly shook her head.

“No.””

Maya looked at her.

“Then who was he?””

Vanessa's voice barely carried.

“Evelyn's son.””

The laptop suddenly chimed.

A new video had arrived.

Maya clicked it.

Daniel appeared on screen.

But he wasn't alone.

A woman stood beside him.

She looked directly into the camera.

Maya stopped breathing.

It was Amara.

Daniel smiled.

“Midnight.””

Then Amara whispered,

May you like

“Maya, don't bring the trust papers.””

The video cut.
