Chapter 3: The Locked Door
The front door opened.
Maya stood frozen at the top of the stairs, the photograph trembling between her fingers.
Marcus stared past her toward the hallway.
Vanessa appeared below.
She wasn't surprised by the sound.
That frightened Maya more than anything.
“You knew someone was coming,” Maya said.
Vanessa looked up.
“Maya, come downstairs.””
“No.””
Marcus moved toward the staircase.
“Stay upstairs.””
Maya looked at him.
“Who is it?””
Marcus didn't answer.
The door downstairs closed.
A woman's voice came from the foyer.
“Marcus?””
Maya's heart slammed against her ribs.
She knew that voice.
Not from memory.
Not really.
From the voicemail.
From old recordings.
From years of wondering whether the sound belonged to a real person or a story adults had carefully built around her.
Sarah.
Vanessa hurried toward the foyer.
Marcus blocked her.
“Don't.””
Vanessa stopped.
“Marcus, you don't know what she's here for.””
“You knew she'd come.””
“I knew she might.””
Maya descended three steps.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked back.
His face was wet now.
“Stay there.””
Sarah spoke again.
“I know she's here.””
Maya stopped breathing.
The voice came closer.
“I know my daughter is in this house.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Maya whispered, “Daughter.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The front hallway came into view.
Then a woman stepped into the kitchen.
She was Black, perhaps in her early forties, with shoulder-length curls and a dark coat still damp from the rain.
Maya stared at her.
The woman stared back.
Neither moved.
Sarah's eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Oh, Maya.””
Maya gripped the photograph.
“How do you know my name?””
Sarah gave a broken smile.
“Because I gave it to you.””
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Dad?””
Sarah's voice shook.
“I held you the night you were born.””
Vanessa snapped, “Sarah, you need to leave.””
Sarah turned toward her.
“You've had seventeen years.””
Her voice was calm now.
“You don't get to decide when I leave anymore.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Sarah, why now?””
“Because she found out.””
“Found out what?””
Sarah looked at Maya.
“That I didn't abandon you.””
Maya descended the rest of the stairs.
“Then who took you away?””
Sarah's eyes dropped.
“I wasn't taken.””
Maya frowned.
“What?””
Sarah looked at Marcus.
“I was forced to disappear.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Sarah reached into her coat.
Marcus immediately tensed.
“What are you doing?””
“Showing her the truth.””
She pulled out a small envelope.
Maya looked at it.
Sarah held it toward her.
“Your father knows what this is.””
Marcus didn't move.
Maya took the envelope.
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
Tiny.
Faded.
*BABY GIRL — WRIGHT*
Maya stared at it.
Her fingers shook.
“You kept this?””
Sarah nodded.
“I kept everything.””
“Then why didn't you come back?””
Sarah looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
Maya's voice broke.
“Why?””
Sarah whispered, “Because I was told you would die if I did.””
The kitchen went silent.
Vanessa's face hardened.
“That is a lie.””
Sarah turned.
“You should know.””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“Marcus, tell her!””
Maya looked between them.
“Tell me what?””
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.
“I didn't know.””
Sarah's expression changed.
“You knew enough.””
“I thought you were threatening her.””
“I was trying to warn you.””
“You disappeared.””
“Because Vanessa told me you had chosen her.””
Maya stared at Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never said that.””
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“You sent me the divorce papers.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“I never filed for divorce.””
Sarah reached into the envelope and pulled out another document.
She handed it to Maya.
At the bottom was Marcus's name.
Maya stared.
“Dad…”
Marcus stepped closer.
“That isn't my signature.””
Sarah's eyes narrowed.
“That's what I discovered six months ago.””
Maya looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa was crying now.
But Maya couldn't tell whether they were tears of guilt or fear.
Then Marcus noticed something on the document.
His expression changed.
“That's not my signature.””
He pointed to the bottom corner.
“That's my old employee number.””
Sarah nodded.
“Exactly.””
Maya looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“It means someone had access to my personnel records.””
Vanessa slowly backed toward the counter.
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Someone inside this house.””
Maya turned toward her stepmother.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Where were you the night Sarah disappeared?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Maya's phone buzzed.
She looked down.
A new message had arrived from an unknown number.
*DON'T TRUST SARAH. ASK VANESSA ABOUT THE SECOND BABY.*
Maya's face went cold.
She slowly raised her eyes.
“Second baby?””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
Sarah stopped breathing.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered,
“You weren't supposed to find that.””
