Chapter 2: The Woman in the Photograph
The phone kept ringing.
Maya stared at the name as if looking at it long enough might make it disappear.
*SARAH — MAYA’S MOM*
The vibration rattled against the marble.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Marcus grabbed Vanessa’s phone before Maya could touch it.
He stared at the screen.
“Sarah?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Marcus looked at her.
“Sarah?””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
His voice was low.
“Not another explanation.””
Maya’s tears spilled over.
“You knew.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It isn't what you think.””
“You knew my mother was alive.””
“Maya—”
“You knew!””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa backed away from the island.
“I don't know.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You just told her not to answer a call from the woman you claim you don't know where she is.””
“I panicked.””
“Why?””
“I panicked because this is complicated.””
Maya stepped forward.
“What’s complicated about my mother calling me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
For a moment, her expression almost softened.
Then it hardened again.
“You're not ready.””
Maya stared at her.
“Not ready for my own mother?””
Marcus's fist tightened.
“Vanessa, what did you do?””
“I didn't hurt anybody.””
“That wasn't my question.””
The phone stopped ringing.
The sudden silence felt worse.
Maya whispered, “She called me.””
Marcus looked down.
A missed call appeared.
Then another notification.
*1 new voicemail.*
Maya reached for the phone.
Marcus gave it to her.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don't.””
Maya looked directly at her.
“You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.””
She pressed the voicemail.
Static.
Then a woman’s breathing.
Slow.
Unsteady.
Maya’s entire body stiffened.
A voice came through.
Older than the voice Maya remembered from the few recordings Marcus had kept.
But unmistakable.
“Maya?””
Maya covered her mouth.
The message continued.
“If this is really you listening…”
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya looked at Marcus.
He had tears in his eyes.
The voice continued.
“I know what they told you. I know what you were supposed to believe.””
Vanessa whispered, “Turn it off.””
Marcus snapped, “Be quiet.””
Sarah’s voice became softer.
“Your father didn't abandon you.””
Maya froze.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Sarah continued.
“And Vanessa knows why.””
The voicemail ended.
Nobody spoke.
Maya slowly lowered the phone.
“You said Dad left.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“I never said—”
“You said he chose another family.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You told her that?””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From what?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't understand what Sarah was like.””
Maya stepped closer.
“You've spent my whole life telling me she was dangerous.””
“She was.””
“Then why is she calling me?””
“Because she wants something.””
“What?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Marcus noticed.
“What does she want?””
“I don't know.””
Maya stared at the phone.
“Then I'll ask her.””
She opened the contacts.
Her thumb hovered over Sarah’s name.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed Maya’s wrist.
“Stop.””
Maya jerked away.
“Don't touch me!””
Vanessa froze.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Never put your hands on her again.””
Vanessa’s face crumpled for half a second.
Then she turned and walked toward the hallway.
Maya called after her.
“Where are you going?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Marcus followed her with his eyes.
“Maya, stay here.””
“No.””
She walked toward the staircase.
“I've been staying here my entire life.””
She reached the first step.
“I think it's time I saw what you were hiding.””
Marcus caught up.
“Maya, wait.””
But she was already climbing.
At the top of the stairs, she stopped.
A door stood slightly open at the end of the hallway.
Marcus's old office.
Maya had never been allowed inside.
She pushed it open.
Dusty boxes lined the walls.
Old paperwork.
Photographs.
A locked filing cabinet.
Maya pulled open the first drawer of a desk.
Nothing.
Second drawer.
Nothing.
Then she noticed a small wooden box pushed behind a stack of tax folders.
She pulled it free.
The lid wasn't locked.
Inside was a photograph.
Maya picked it up.
Her breath caught.
It showed a younger Marcus standing beside a smiling Black woman with long natural curls.
Between them was a tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
Maya turned the photograph over.
Three words were written on the back.
*She never left.*
Maya stared at the handwriting.
Then she heard Marcus behind her.
“Maya…”
She turned.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
May you like
His face went white.
And from downstairs came the sound of the front door unlocking.
