Chapter 3: It Recorded Everything
Darnell stood in the doorway, still wearing his blue polo shirt, his car keys clenched in one hand.
He had returned home earlier than expected because his afternoon meeting had been canceled.
At first, he couldn't make sense of what he was seeing.
His nine-year-old son was pressed against the wall, crying with both arms raised over his head.
A red bowl of dry pet food sat on the table.
His wife stood inches from Malik, one hand gripping the boy's shoulder and the other holding a wooden stick above him.
For several seconds, Darnell didn't move.
He simply stared.
Then his keys slipped from his hand and struck the floor.
“Renee,” he said, his voice low, “put the stick down.””
Renee spun around.
The stick dropped immediately to her side.
“Darnell!””
She released Malik's shoulder and stepped away from him so quickly that the chair behind her scraped across the floor.
“Baby, you're home early.””
Darnell didn't look at her.
He looked at Malik.
“Son?””
Malik's arms remained over his head.
“Malik, it's Daddy. You're okay.””
The boy slowly lowered his hands.
His face crumpled.
“Daddy!””
He rushed toward Darnell, nearly tripping over his own feet. Darnell dropped to one knee and caught him, wrapping both arms around his small body.
Malik buried his face against his father's chest.
“I'm sorry,” he sobbed.
“I'm sorry, Daddy.””
Darnell's arms tightened.
“Sorry for what, son?””
“I didn't eat it.””
Darnell pulled back slightly.
“Didn't eat what?””
Malik pointed toward the table.
Darnell followed his gaze.
The red bowl sat exactly where Renee had placed it.
His eyes moved from the bowl to the wooden stick in Renee's hand.
Then he looked at his wife.
“What was he supposed to eat?””
Renee opened her mouth, but Loretta spoke first.
“Darnell, you need to see what happened in here.””
Renee's head snapped toward her.
“Loretta, don't.””
Darnell slowly stood, keeping one hand on Malik's shoulder.
“Don't what?””
“Don't make this into something it isn't,” Renee replied.
“Malik was misbehaving, and I was correcting him.””
Darnell stared at her.
“With a stick?””
“I wasn't going to hit him!””
Malik flinched at the sudden rise in her voice.
Darnell noticed.
That tiny movement seemed to change something in his face.
“Lower your voice,” he said.
Renee immediately pressed a hand to her chest.
“Are you serious? You're taking his side before you've even asked what happened?””
“Then tell me what happened.””
“He was being disrespectful.””
“What did he do?””
“He refused to listen.””
“To what?””
Renee glanced at the bowl.
For the first time, she seemed to realize that the object she had used to frighten Malik was now sitting in plain sight between them.
“I was making a point,” she said.
Darnell looked down at his son.
“Malik, did she tell you to eat that?””
Malik nodded against his father's side.
“Say it, son. You're not in trouble.””
“She told me to eat it.””
Darnell's jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
Renee threw up her hands.
“Oh, come on! He's leaving out the part where he was being difficult all morning.””
Loretta stepped beside the table.
“No, Renee. He's telling the truth.””
“You stay out of this!””
“No,” Loretta answered.
“Not anymore.””
Darnell turned toward his mother.
“What do you mean?””
Loretta looked up at the security camera.
“The camera was unplugged when I came into the room.””
Darnell followed her gaze.
A small blue recording light glowed above the kitchen doorway.
He looked back at Renee.
“You unplugged it?””
Renee's face changed for just a second.
Then she recovered.
“The cord was loose.””
“It's plugged into the wall.””
“I was cleaning.””
“Cleaning what? The ceiling?””
“Darnell, please. You're making me sound like some kind of monster.””
He stared at her without answering.
Renee placed the stick on the table and moved toward him, lowering her voice into the familiar softness she used when she wanted him to reconsider something.
“Baby, you know how hard I've tried with Malik. I have given up so much to make this family work. Sometimes he pushes me until I don't know what else to do.””
Darnell didn't step toward her.
“Did you make him eat dog food?””
“I was trying to teach him a lesson.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Renee's eyes filled with tears.
“I would never actually hurt him.””
Malik gripped his father's shirt.
“Daddy, she said you weren't here.””
Darnell looked down at him.
“What?””
“She said you weren't here to make rules for her.””
The room became completely silent.
Renee's lips parted.
“Malik is confused.””
“No,” Loretta said.
“He's frightened.””
Renee turned on her.
“You've wanted me out of this family since the day I married Darnell!””
Loretta didn't raise her voice.
“This isn't about your marriage. It's about what you did to that child when you thought nobody was watching.””
Darnell slowly looked back at the camera.
Then at the outlet.
Then at Renee.
“Is it recording now?””
Loretta nodded.
“Yes. I plugged it back in.””
Renee's expression drained of color.
Darnell took a step toward the kitchen doorway, studying the little blue light.
“How long has it been recording?””
“Since I reconnected it,” Loretta replied.
“But the earlier footage may still be saved on the system.””
Renee immediately shook her head.
“No. No, that's not necessary.””
Darnell turned.
“Why not?””
“Because there's nothing to see!””
“Then you shouldn't have a problem with me watching it.””
Renee reached for his arm.
“Darnell, listen to me. We can talk about this privately. We don't need to bring cameras into our marriage.””
He moved his arm away.
“You brought the camera into this when you unplugged it.””
“That's not fair!””
“What isn't fair is my son crying in a corner while you stand over him with a stick.””
Renee looked toward Malik.
For a moment, she seemed to consider approaching him.
Darnell stepped between them.
“Don't.””
She stopped.
His voice was quiet, but there was no uncertainty in it.
“Don't go near him right now.””
Renee stared at her husband as if she had never seen him before.
Then she looked at Loretta, who stood beside the table with her hands folded and her expression steady.
“You planned this,” Renee whispered.
Loretta shook her head.
“No. You did.””
Darnell reached for his phone.
“I want the footage.””
Renee's breathing became shallow.
“Darnell, please.””
He ignored her and began opening the security system app.
Malik clung to his side, his tears soaking into the blue fabric of his father's shirt.
Darnell looked at the screen.
A list of recordings appeared.
He tapped the newest file.
The video began loading.
Renee watched the progress indicator move across the screen.
Then her eyes darted toward the front door.
Loretta noticed.
So did Darnell.
He lifted his gaze from the phone and stared directly at his wife.
“Renee,” he said, “where were you planning to go?””
She didn't answer.
May you like
On the phone, the recording finished loading.
And the first frame showed Renee reaching up to unplug the camera.
