Chapter 7: The Man Who Wanted to Be Malik’s Father
For several seconds, Darnell couldn't speak.
Malik stood beside Loretta, gripping the hem of her gray cardigan with both hands. His eyes moved between his father and Renee, searching their faces for an explanation that would make the last few minutes less frightening.
Darnell crouched in front of him.
“Son, look at me. Who is Marcus Bell?””
Malik swallowed.
“He came here when you were at work.””
“When?””
“Last Tuesday.””
Darnell felt his stomach tighten.
“What did he say to you?””
Malik rubbed his palms against his gray T-shirt.
“He said he was Mommy Renee's friend. He brought me a basketball and asked if I wanted to play outside.””
Darnell glanced toward Renee.
She stood near the hallway, her purse hanging from one shoulder, refusing to meet his eyes.
“Did you go outside with him?”” Darnell asked.
“No, Daddy. Grandma told me not to leave the house with people she didn't know.””
Loretta nodded slowly.
“I remember that afternoon. I came home from the grocery store and found a stranger standing near the front porch. Renee introduced him as someone from her work.””
Darnell looked at his mother.
“You didn't tell me.””
“I didn't know he had spoken to Malik like that. Renee said he was dropping off some paperwork.””
Darnell turned back to his son.
“What happened after he gave you the basketball?””
Malik's voice became smaller.
“He asked if I liked having two dads.””
Darnell went still.
“What did you say?””
“I told him I only had you.””
Malik's eyes filled with tears.
“Then he said that might change soon.””
Darnell closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he kept his voice gentle.
“Did he ever touch you or try to take you somewhere?””
“No, Daddy.””
“Did he tell you to keep anything secret?””
Malik nodded.
“He said not to tell you he came over because it was supposed to be a surprise.””
Darnell hugged him.
“You did the right thing by telling me.””
Behind them, Renee suddenly spoke.
“This is ridiculous. Marcus was trying to be friendly.””
Darnell stood.
“Then why did he tell my son he might have a new father?””
“He was joking!””
“What's funny about making a nine-year-old think his father is being replaced?””
Renee threw her purse onto a chair.
“You're twisting everything! Marcus was helping me figure out how to handle a situation you refuse to acknowledge.””
“What situation?””
“Our marriage!””
Darnell stared at her.
“You brought another man into my house, let him talk to my son about replacing me, and secretly explored sending Malik away. How is any of that about fixing our marriage?””
Renee's cheeks flushed.
“Because I couldn't keep living like this!””
“Then you should have told me you wanted to leave.””
“I didn't want to leave!””
“Then what did you want?””
She opened her mouth, but no answer came.
Loretta carefully unfolded the guardianship consultation.
“Darnell, read the last page.””
He looked down.
The document contained a summary of a consultation with a family law office. It wasn't a court order, and it didn't establish anyone's custody rights. But it outlined possible legal steps if a parent became unavailable or if another adult sought guardianship under appropriate circumstances.
One paragraph had been highlighted.
The prospective applicant should document any claimed instability in the current household and seek qualified legal advice before pursuing any guardianship arrangement.
Darnell looked at Renee.
“Were you trying to build a case against me?””
“No!””
“Then why is my name on this document?””
“Marcus found the attorney!””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Renee began pacing.
“You work all day. You're always exhausted. Sometimes you forget school meetings, and sometimes you don't even notice when Malik is having problems. I thought someone needed to make a plan.””
Darnell's expression tightened.
“If you believed I was failing as a father, why didn't you talk to me?””
“Because you would have defended him!””
“He's my son!””
“And I'm your wife!””
The familiar argument filled the room again, but something had changed. Darnell no longer heard it as a dispute between two people who wanted to be understood.
He heard a woman explaining why she had decided that her husband's child was an obstacle to her happiness.
He glanced at the document again.
“Who was supposed to become Malik's guardian?””
Renee didn't answer.
Darnell repeated the question.
“Was it Marcus?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No. He was just helping me understand my options.””
“Then whose name was going to be on the paperwork?””
Renee stared at the floor.
Loretta's voice was quiet but firm.
“Renee, you need to tell the truth now.””
Renee finally looked up.
“I hadn't decided.””
Darnell held her gaze.
“You hadn't decided, or you didn't want me to find out?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
Darnell took out his phone and photographed each page of the consultation. He saved the residential program emails, the application, and the security footage. He didn't know yet whether the documents indicated a crime or simply a series of deeply disturbing decisions, but he wasn't going to rely on memory or promises.
Then he called the residential program's published contact number.
Renee rushed toward him.
“Darnell, don't do this!””
He raised one hand to keep her back and put the call on speaker.
A receptionist answered.
“Good afternoon. How may I help you?””
“My name is Darnell Carter. An application was submitted for my nine-year-old son, Malik Carter. I need to report that I did not authorize it, and I dispute the signature attached to the application.””
The receptionist's tone changed.
“I'm sorry to hear that, sir. May I place you on a brief hold while I contact our admissions supervisor?””
“Yes.””
A moment later, a woman came on the line.
“This is Patricia, admissions supervisor. Mr. Carter, I understand there's a question regarding your son's application.””
“That's correct. I never consented to a placement assessment. I also never authorized anyone to sign my name.””
“Understood. We can flag the application for review and suspend further processing while we verify the information.””
“Please do that. And I want written confirmation that no placement or transfer will proceed based on this application.””
“Certainly. We'll send confirmation to the contact information on file.””
Darnell thanked her and ended the call.
Renee stared at him.
“You've made me look like a liar.””
He looked at her, exhausted.
“You did that yourself.””
For the first time, she didn't shout back.
Instead, she glanced at her purse and then toward the front door.
Darnell noticed.
“Are you expecting someone?””
“No.””
“Then why do you keep looking outside?””
Renee said nothing.
A car horn sounded from the driveway.
Malik stiffened.
Loretta immediately placed a protective arm around him.
Darnell walked to the front window and looked through the glass.
A black SUV sat at the end of the driveway.
A man in a dark jacket was getting out.
Darnell recognized him from a photograph attached to the guardianship consultation.
Marcus Bell.
The man walked toward the front door carrying a thick manila envelope.
Then Darnell's phone vibrated.
An incoming message appeared from an unknown number.
*You need to talk to Renee before you make any decisions. There's something she hasn't told you about Malik's mother.*
Darnell stared at the message.
Behind him, Renee whispered, “Don't answer him.””
The doorbell rang.
May you like
And the man outside called through the door.
“Darnell? We need to talk about what really happened to your family.””
