Chapter 4: The Truth on the Screen

The first thing Darnell saw was his wife looking directly at the security camera before pulling its plug from the wall.

The second thing he noticed was the time stamp.

The footage had begun recording before Loretta reconnected the camera. The system had preserved the earlier segment locally, exactly as he had hoped when he installed it.

Renee stood beside him, staring at the phone.

“Darnell, wait,” she said.

“Let me explain.””

He didn't look at her.

“I'm watching.””

On the screen, Renee grabbed Malik by the wrist and dragged him toward the table. The boy stumbled, trying to keep his balance.

Then came the words.

“Eat it.””

Malik's small voice followed.

“No!””

Darnell's fingers tightened around his phone.

He had heard his son cry before. He had comforted him after nightmares, held him through fevers, and watched him cry on the first day of school when he didn't want to let go of his father's hand.

But this was different.

There was no confusion in Malik's face. No stubbornness. No childish attempt to win an argument.

There was fear.

Darnell watched Renee point at the red bowl.

He watched Malik back against the wall.

Then the footage showed Renee taking the wooden stick from the table.

“Your father isn't here,” she said on the recording.

Darnell stopped breathing for a moment.

Behind him, Malik pressed his face against Loretta's cardigan.

“Daddy?”” the boy whispered.

Darnell paused the video.

He crouched in front of his son.

“I'm right here.””

“Are you mad at me?””

The question struck him harder than anything he'd seen on the screen.

Darnell put his phone on the table and held Malik's face gently between his hands.

“No, son. I'm not mad at you.””

Malik's eyes searched his father's face.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

“But she said I was bad.””

Darnell swallowed.

“You didn't deserve that. Do you hear me? Nothing you did makes that okay.””

Malik began crying again, but this time he leaned into his father's arms instead of trying to hide.

Darnell held him until his breathing slowed.

Then he stood.

Renee immediately stepped forward.

“Baby, I know it looks terrible, but you have to understand the context.””

Darnell picked up his phone.

“What context makes that acceptable?””

“He was refusing to listen to me.””

“So you threatened him with a stick?””

“I wasn't going to hit him!””

“You picked it up while he was crying and cornered against a wall.””

“I was trying to scare him into behaving.””

The words escaped before Renee could stop herself.

Everyone went still.

Loretta slowly raised her head.

Darnell stared at his wife.

“You were trying to scare a nine-year-old child?””

Renee's mouth opened.

“I didn't mean—”

“You just said it.””

She reached for his hand.

He stepped away.

“Don't touch me.””

Her expression hardened.

For a brief second, the tears disappeared, replaced by the same cold look she'd worn when she ordered Malik to eat from the bowl.

“You're really going to throw away our marriage over one bad moment?””

Darnell looked toward his son.

“One bad moment?””

He gestured at the phone.

“I watched you unplug the camera, drag him across the room, and threaten him while he begged you to stop. How many moments like this have there been when I wasn't home?””

Renee said nothing.

Darnell turned to Malik.

“Has she ever done anything like this before?””

Malik's eyes widened.

Renee immediately interrupted.

“Don't you dare put ideas in his head!””

Darnell's head snapped toward her.

“I asked my son a question.””

“He's a child. He doesn't understand what he's saying.””

“Then let him answer.””

Malik looked at Loretta.

She knelt beside him.

“You can tell your daddy the truth, sweetheart. Nobody is going to punish you for telling the truth.””

Malik rubbed his nose with his sleeve.

“Sometimes she takes my dinner away.””

Darnell's face went pale.

“What?””

“When I don't finish my homework fast enough. Or when I forget to put my shoes away.””

Renee threw her hands into the air.

“Oh, for goodness' sake! I've taken away privileges. Every parent does that!””

Malik shook his head.

“She says Grandma can't know.””

Loretta's hand moved to her mouth.

Darnell looked at Renee as if the room had shifted beneath his feet.

“She told you not to tell your grandmother?””

Renee crossed her arms.

“I was trying to keep discipline consistent.””

“By making him afraid to talk?””

“He exaggerates everything!””

Darnell picked up the phone again.

“Then let's keep watching.””

He pressed play.

The recording showed Loretta entering the kitchen, questioning Renee, and trying to approach Malik. It captured Renee snapping at the boy, picking up the stick, and raising it while he covered his head.

Then came the moment Darnell entered.

He watched himself freeze in the doorway.

He watched Renee lower the stick.

And he watched Loretta point toward the camera.

“I turned it back on,” Loretta said in the recording.

“It recorded everything.””

Darnell paused the video.

The dining room was silent except for Malik's uneven breathing.

Renee slowly sat in a chair.

“You're making me out to be some kind of monster,” she whispered.

Darnell didn't answer.

She looked up at him.

“I love you.””

He stared at her for several seconds.

“I thought you loved my son, too.””

“I do!””

“Then why was he terrified of you?””

Renee began crying again.

This time, Darnell didn't move to comfort her.

He opened the security system's event history and scrolled backward through the previous week.

Several recordings had been marked unavailable because the camera had been disconnected at different times. Others were still intact.

One file showed Renee entering the dining room alone.

Another showed her standing near Malik's bedroom door.

Darnell tapped the second recording.

Renee lunged toward the phone.

“Don't watch that!””

He pulled it away.

The sudden movement left them staring at each other.

Darnell's voice dropped.

“Why?””

Renee's face crumpled.

“Because you won't understand!””

He pressed play.

The video showed Renee entering the hallway with a folded piece of paper in her hand.

She looked toward the camera, then toward Malik's bedroom.

Before opening the door, she spoke into her phone.

The security camera had no audio from that hallway, but her lips moved clearly enough to reveal several words.

Darnell zoomed in.

Renee.

Malik.

Then a phrase that made his stomach turn.

Send him away.

Darnell slowly raised his eyes.

“What were you planning to do to my son?””

Renee stared at the phone.

For the first time since he had returned home, she had no explanation ready.

And when Darnell enlarged the paper in her hand, he recognized the letterhead at the top.

It belonged to a private residential school for troubled children.
