Chapter 8: The Secret Behind the Envelope
Darnell didn't open the door immediately.
He stood in the hallway, staring through the narrow glass panel beside it. Marcus Bell waited on the porch with the manila envelope tucked under one arm.
The man looked composed, almost impatient.
Like someone arriving for an appointment he believed he had every right to attend.
Darnell opened the door but kept one hand on the frame.
“Who told you to come here?””
Marcus glanced past him.
“Renee.””
Darnell turned his head.
Renee stood several feet away, pale and motionless.
“Did you invite him here?”” Darnell asked.
She shook her head.
“I haven't spoken to him today.””
Marcus gave a humorless laugh.
“That's not entirely true.””
“Get off my porch,” Darnell said.
Marcus raised the envelope.
“Not until you read what's inside.””
“I don't know you. You've been speaking to my son without my permission, and you've been involved in paperwork concerning his future. You have five seconds to leave.””
Marcus looked at Malik, who had appeared beside Loretta in the living room doorway.
“Malik, buddy, can you come here for a second?””
Malik immediately stepped backward.
Darnell moved into the doorway, blocking Marcus's view.
“Do not speak to my son.””
Marcus raised both hands.
“I'm not here to cause trouble.””
“Then leave.””
“I think you deserve to know the truth about your late wife.””
The words stopped Darnell.
His first wife, Denise, had died three years earlier after a sudden medical emergency. Malik had been six at the time.
Since then, Darnell had done everything he could to preserve his son's memories of her. He kept photographs in the hallway, saved her handwritten birthday cards, and made sure Malik understood that he could talk about his mother whenever he wanted.
He had never expected a stranger to arrive at his door claiming to know something about her.
“What does Denise have to do with this?”” Darnell asked.
Marcus glanced at Renee.
“Perhaps you should ask your wife.””
Renee shook her head.
“Don't listen to him.””
Marcus opened the envelope slightly.
“Darnell, I have copies of messages and documents showing that Renee contacted me because she believed you were hiding information about Malik's biological family.””
Darnell frowned.
“Malik's biological family?””
“His mother had a sister.””
“I know Denise had a sister.””
“Did you know they were estranged shortly before Denise died?””
Darnell's expression tightened.
“That isn't a secret.””
“Did you know her sister tried to contact your family afterward?””
“No.””
Marcus looked toward Renee.
“Did you tell him that?””
Renee's lips trembled.
“Stop it.””
Darnell turned to her.
“Tell me what?””
She didn't answer.
Marcus continued.
“Denise's sister believed she had a right to remain involved in Malik's life. Renee contacted me because she found messages between them and became concerned about a possible custody dispute.””
Darnell stared at Renee.
“You went through Denise's things?””
“I found the messages accidentally.””
“When?””
“Months ago.””
“And you never told me?””
“You were already struggling. I didn't want to upset you.””
Marcus let out a short laugh.
“That's not why she kept quiet.””
Darnell turned sharply.
“Explain.””
Marcus took a document from the envelope.
“Renee wanted to know whether Denise's sister could challenge your parental authority. She asked me to help her understand what would happen if you became unable to care for Malik.””
Darnell's voice grew colder.
“Why were you helping her?””
“Because she asked me to.””
“That's not an answer.””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said, “Because I knew Denise's sister.””
The room fell silent.
Loretta stepped closer to the doorway.
“Who are you to Denise's family?””
Marcus looked down at the document.
“I was engaged to Denise's sister years ago.””
Darnell stared at him.
“You were engaged to my wife's sister?””
“Before Denise died, yes.””
“And you never thought that was relevant when you started visiting my home?””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“I wasn't visiting to cause trouble.””
“Then why were you telling my son he might have a new father?””
Marcus looked genuinely uncomfortable for the first time.
“Renee said you were considering sending Malik to live with relatives. I thought the boy needed to understand that his family situation might change.””
Darnell's voice rose.
“You thought a nine-year-old needed to hear that from a stranger?””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I shouldn't have said it that way.””
“You shouldn't have said it at all.””
Darnell took the document from him but remained in the doorway.
The first page was an email exchange between Renee and a family law office. The messages discussed Denise's sister, a woman named Camille Brooks, who had apparently requested information about Malik's welfare after learning that Darnell had remarried.
One message from Renee stood out.
I need to know whether Camille can gain access to Malik without my permission. Darnell will never agree to contact if he thinks she is questioning his parenting.
Darnell read it twice.
“Why would Camille question my parenting?””
Marcus shrugged.
“That's what I was trying to determine.””
“Did you speak to her?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Marcus looked toward Renee.
“She said she had never requested custody of Malik.””
Darnell stared at him.
“What?””
“She said she wanted to meet her nephew and make sure he was doing well. She denied trying to remove him from your home.””
Darnell slowly turned to Renee.
“You told me Denise's sister wanted to take Malik away?””
Renee began crying.
“I was worried!””
“You told me she was dangerous.””
“I never said dangerous!””
“You told me she wanted custody!””
“I thought she might!””
Darnell looked back at Marcus.
“Did Camille ever file anything against me?””
“No.””
“Did she ever ask a court to remove Malik?””
“Not that I know of.””
“Then why was I never told she wanted contact?””
Marcus said nothing.
Loretta stepped into the hallway.
“Because someone decided that keeping Malik isolated would be easier than telling the truth.””
Renee wiped her face.
“That isn't fair.””
Darnell's phone vibrated again.
A message appeared from the same unknown number.
*Ask Renee why she told Camille that Malik didn't want to see her.*
Darnell looked at his wife.
“Did you tell Camille that Malik didn't want to meet her?””
Renee froze.
“Answer me.””
“I was protecting him from confusion.””
“Did you tell her that?””
She nodded once.
Darnell's stomach turned.
He had spent three years believing Denise's family had chosen to stay away. He had accepted that explanation because grief made even simple conversations difficult.
Now he wondered how many opportunities Malik had lost because someone else had decided what was best for him.
Marcus placed the envelope on the hallway table.
“There are copies of the original messages inside. Camille sent Renee several requests to arrange a supervised introduction. Renee told her Malik was not interested.””
Darnell looked toward his son.
Malik stood beside Loretta, staring at the floor.
“Son,” Darnell said softly, “have you ever heard of someone named Camille?””
Malik shook his head.
“No, Daddy.””
Darnell looked back at Renee.
“You made decisions about my son's family without telling me. You submitted paperwork behind my back. You frightened him in his own home.””
Renee's tears continued, but she had stopped trying to interrupt.
Darnell picked up the envelope.
“I'm going to contact Camille myself. I'll verify everything independently.””
Marcus nodded.
“That's probably best.””
“And you're not coming back here without my permission.””
Marcus started to speak, then seemed to think better of it.
He stepped off the porch.
Before he reached his SUV, he turned around.
“One more thing, Darnell.””
Darnell remained in the doorway.
“Camille told me something I didn't believe at first. She said Renee had contacted her before the residential school application was submitted.””
Renee's face went rigid.
Marcus continued.
“She said Renee offered her a deal.””
Darnell felt a chill move through him.
“What kind of deal?””
Marcus looked directly at Renee.
“She was promised that if she stayed away from Malik, Renee would make sure she never had to worry about the family again.””
Darnell turned toward his wife.
“What did you promise her?””
Renee whispered something that nobody could hear.
Then she ran toward the living room, grabbed her purse, and pulled a folded document from the inner pocket.
She held it against her chest.
“You don't understand,” she cried.
“If you see this, everything changes.””
Darnell extended his hand.
“Give it to me.””
Renee shook her head.
“No.””
“Renee.””
She backed away until her shoulders touched the wall.
Then she looked at Malik.
“I was trying to keep him safe from what his mother did.””
Darnell's face went completely still.
“Denise is dead,” he said.
“What could she possibly have done?””
Renee opened the folded document.

And as Darnell read the first line, he realized the secret wasn't about Denise's sister at all.
It was about a decision made before Malik was born.
