Chapter 3: The Woman Who Held the Lie

Evelyn had always been the person who kept the Ashford mansion standing.

She knew which flowers Adrian’s mother liked before she passed away. She knew how Adrian took his coffee when he was too tired to admit he was exhausted. She knew which rooms needed extra attention after difficult business meetings because the silence in those spaces felt heavier than usual.

For fifteen years, she had been the one constant in the house.

But now, standing in the foyer with Adrian’s son in his arms, she looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Mr. Ashford…”

Her voice was barely there.

Adrian didn’t move.

Noah slept peacefully against his chest, one small hand still wrapped around the green dinosaur. The contrast made the moment almost unbearable.

A child who knew nothing about betrayal.

A child who had spent his whole life missing a father he was never allowed to know.

And a house full of adults who had let it happen.

“I want the truth,” Adrian said.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Adrian gave a humorless laugh.

“Protect me?””

The anger in his voice made the guards straighten.

“You let me believe my child was dead.””

Evelyn flinched.

“I didn’t know he was alive.””

“You didn’t know?””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You just told me Lauren told you my son didn’t survive. You didn’t ask questions? You didn’t verify anything?””

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“No.””

“Why?””

The older woman’s face tightened with regret.

“Because I believed her.””

Adrian stared.

“Why would you believe her?””

Evelyn was silent.

And that silence told him there was more.

Maya stood nearby, watching everything unfold. She looked exhausted, but there was something else in her expression now.

Not fear.

Recognition.

She had spent three years wondering why nobody believed her.

Why every door closed.

Why every attempt to reach Adrian disappeared into nothing.

Now the answer was standing in front of her.

Lauren.

Adrian’s trusted assistant.

The person who controlled access to him.

The person who could erase messages, block calls, and rewrite reality.

“Where is Lauren now?”” Adrian asked.

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Evelyn.””

The older woman looked up.

“I gave Lauren access because you trusted her.””

That sentence changed something.

Adrian went quiet.

Because it was true.

Lauren hadn’t forced her way into his life.

He had opened the door.

She had been there during the hardest years after his father died. She had helped him rebuild the company. She had organized his schedule, handled his personal affairs, and protected him from distractions.

Or at least that was what he believed.

“How long did she know about Maya?”” Adrian asked.

Evelyn hesitated.

“Since before the pregnancy.””

Maya’s face changed.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew her?””

Maya nodded slowly.

“She met me once.””

“When?””

“Before everything happened.””

Maya swallowed.

“She came to my apartment.””

Adrian’s expression turned cold.

“She came to your home?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Maya looked away.

“She wanted me to disappear.””

The room went silent.

Adrian felt his grip tighten slightly around Noah.

“What did she say?””

Maya took a breath.

“She told me you were moving on.””

Adrian’s face darkened.

“She said you were embarrassed by me. That you regretted what happened between us.””

“That’s a lie.””

“I know that now.””

Her voice cracked.

“But back then, I was young. I was scared. I was pregnant. And the person delivering that message was someone you trusted.””

Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.

He remembered Maya.

Not the employee.

Not the woman standing in front of him now.

The woman from before.

The woman who laughed too loudly at his serious jokes. The woman who challenged him when everyone else agreed. The woman who made him feel like he was more than his money.

Then everything changed.

One day she was gone.

And everyone told him it was because she wanted nothing from him.

He believed it.

Because the alternative was admitting someone he trusted had stolen something precious.

“When Noah was born…” Adrian said quietly.

“What happened?””

Maya looked down.

“I was alone.””

Those three words hurt more than anything else.

“I went to the hospital. I called you over and over.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I never got those calls.””

“I know.””

“I would have come.””

Maya looked at him.

“I know.””

That was somehow worse.

Because she believed him.

She wasn’t accusing him of not caring.

She was telling him someone had made sure he never had the chance.

Maya continued.

“After Noah was born, Lauren came to the hospital.””

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

“She told me you didn’t want to see me.””

His face went cold.

“She said you were angry.””

Maya’s eyes filled.

“She said you wanted me to leave.””

Adrian looked toward the closed front doors.

The mansion suddenly felt like a prison.

Not for Maya.

For him.

Because someone had built a lie inside his own life.

“What happened after that?”” he asked.

Maya looked at Noah.

“I left.””

“Where did you go?””

“Everywhere.””

The answer was simple.

Painfully simple.

“I moved three times. I worked whenever I could. I stopped trying to contact you because every time I did, I got the same answer.””

“What answer?””

“That you didn’t want me.””

Adrian looked devastated.

Then his eyes moved back to Evelyn.

“And you helped her.””

Evelyn started crying.

“I was wrong.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

The housekeeper wiped her face.

“But Lauren convinced me you were better off without knowing.””

Adrian frowned.

“Why would she care?””

Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation was the most frightening thing yet.

“Evelyn.””

The woman looked at him.

“Because Lauren was in love with you.””

The words changed the room.

Maya went still.

Adrian’s expression became unreadable.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“She never said it. Not directly. But everyone could see it.””

Adrian thought back.

The late nights.

The way Lauren always seemed to know what he needed.

The way she became colder whenever Maya’s name came up.

The way she always had a reason why someone couldn’t reach him.

“She wanted your life to stay the way she imagined it,” Evelyn whispered.

Adrian looked down at Noah.

And something inside him settled.

Not peace.

Something darker.

Determination.

Because this was no longer just about betrayal.

It was about a child who lost three years because someone wanted control.

Adrian looked at the guards.

“Find Lauren.””

The guards nodded.

Then his eyes returned to Evelyn.

“And before she runs, I want every record in this house preserved.””

Evelyn looked confused.

“Records?””

“Messages. Security footage. Employee logs.””

He paused.

“Everything.””

Maya watched him.

She saw something different in Adrian now.

Not just anger.

A father’s instinct.

The instinct to protect what had been taken.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

One of the guards glanced at the screen.

“Sir.””

Adrian looked over.

“What?””

The guard’s face changed.

“It’s Lauren.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian stared at the phone.

The woman who disappeared.

The woman who erased his family.

Was calling him.

He answered.

“Lauren.””

A long pause.

Then her voice came through.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“Adrian.””

His eyes narrowed.

“How did you know?””

Another pause.

May you like

Then Lauren said something that made his entire body go still.

“Because I know exactly who is standing in your foyer.””
