Chapter 6: The Truth Nobody Wanted
The recording continued.
Lauren’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I know you’re angry, Adrian.””
The sound of her voice inside the mansion made everything feel wrong.
Like she was still there.
Like she had never really left.
“But before you decide I’m the villain, you need to understand something.””
Adrian watched the device.
Noah rested against his shoulder.
Maya stood beside him, frozen.
“You and Maya were never supposed to find your way back to each other.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Lauren continued.
“Because there was a reason everything happened the way it did.””
A pause.
Then:
“Maya was hiding something from you too.””
The room went silent.
Adrian looked at Maya.
She closed her eyes.
Not because she was guilty.
Because she knew this moment had arrived.
“What is she talking about?”” Adrian asked.
Maya didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Adrian’s face changed.
“Maya.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Her silence hurt.
“When were you going to tell me?””
Maya looked down.
“I don’t know.””
The honesty made him step back.
Not because he wanted distance.
Because he was trying to understand how much of his life had been built on missing pieces.
The recording continued.
“Maya knows why I did what I did.””
Lauren’s voice became colder.
“Because she knows Noah wasn’t the only thing that was taken from Adrian.””
The device went silent.
Everyone stared.
Then the recording ended.
Adrian looked at Maya.
“What does that mean?””
Maya’s face was full of pain.
“I didn’t want you dragged into this.””
“Dragged into what?””
She looked toward the staircase.
Then back at him.
“My family.””
Adrian waited.
“My father.””
The answer confused him.
“What about your father?””
Maya took a breath.
“He worked for your father.””
Adrian’s expression shifted.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The Ashford name carried history.
Power.
Old conflicts.
Old secrets.
“My father was the head of security for the company.””
Adrian frowned.
“I remember him.””
Maya nodded.
“Daniel Bennett.””
A memory surfaced.
A quiet man.
Loyal.
Always professional.
Someone Adrian’s father trusted.
“What happened to him?””
Maya looked away.
“He died.””
Adrian softened slightly.
“When?””
“Six months before Noah was born.””
Silence.
“I thought it was an accident,” Maya said.
“But?””
“But later I found out it wasn’t that simple.””
Adrian stared.
“What does that mean?””
Maya’s voice trembled.
“My father had discovered something.””
“About what?””
“Your family.””
The words landed heavily.
Adrian looked toward Evelyn.
The housekeeper immediately looked terrified.
Again.
Always terrified.
“You knew,” Adrian said.
Evelyn looked down.
“I knew pieces.””
“Everybody knows pieces except me.””
Nobody responded.
Maya stepped closer.
“Adrian, listen to me.””
He did.
Because despite everything, he still wanted to believe her.
“My father found financial records that showed someone inside Ashford Holdings was stealing money.””
Adrian frowned.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“My father died before he could tell me everything.””
Adrian looked at the recording.
“And Lauren knew.””
“Yes.””
“Because?””
Maya swallowed.
“Because she was involved.””
The room changed.
The simple betrayal became something bigger.
Something darker.
Lauren hadn’t just stolen a relationship.
She had buried a dangerous truth.
Adrian looked down at Noah.
His son.
The reason everything had come back into his life.
“How much did you know?””
Maya’s voice broke.
“Enough to be afraid.””
“Afraid of Lauren?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because every time I tried to get close to you, something happened.””
Adrian listened.
“My apartment was searched.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“I didn’t know who did it.””
“When?””
“After Noah was born.””
Maya shook her head.
“I thought maybe it was random. Then I realized someone wanted me scared.””
Adrian’s anger returned.
“You should have told me.””
“I tried.””
The words stopped him.
“I tried so many times.””
Her voice cracked.
“But every door was closed.””
Adrian looked away.
Because he knew she was right.
Someone had built walls around him.
Around her.
Around their child.
And now those walls were collapsing.
One of the guards approached carefully.
“Sir.””
Adrian looked over.
“What?””
The guard held a folder.
“We found Lauren’s vehicle abandoned outside the property.””
Maya’s eyes widened.
“She was here?””
The guard nodded.
“She left minutes ago.””
Adrian looked at the folder.
“What else?””
The guard hesitated.
“There was one more thing.””
“What?””
The guard opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Noah.
A recent photograph.
Taken without their knowledge.
Maya covered her mouth.
Adrian stared.
Someone had been watching his son.
For how long?
The guard spoke quietly.
“Sir…”
Adrian looked up.
“We also found evidence that Lauren wasn’t working alone.””
The mansion fell silent.
Adrian looked at Maya.
Maya looked at Noah.
And for the first time, they both understood.
Lauren wasn’t the end of the mystery.
She was only the first person who got caught.
Because someone else had been hiding behind her all along.
