Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Records
Adrian had spent his entire life believing power meant control.
Control over his company.
Control over his decisions.
Control over the people allowed close enough to know him.
But as he stood inside his own mansion holding a photograph of his son that someone had secretly taken, he realized the most painful truth of all.
He had never been in control.
Someone had been moving pieces around him for years.
And he had been too focused on fighting enemies outside his walls to notice the ones who had already walked through his front door.
“Find out who took that picture,” Adrian said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
The guards knew that tone.
It wasn’t the anger of a man about to explode.
It was the focus of a man who had made a decision.
“Yes, sir.””
They left immediately.
Maya watched Adrian carefully.
She had seen him angry before.
But this was different.
This was a man trying to hold together everything that had been ripped apart.
“You don’t have to do this alone,” she said quietly.
Adrian looked at her.
The words surprised him.
Because for three years, they had lived separate lives.
For three years, he believed she had chosen to disappear.
Now he was realizing she had been surviving.
And there was a difference.
“I should have found you,” he said.
Maya looked down.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
His voice softened.
“I need to say it.””
He looked at Noah.
“I should have looked harder.””
The admission carried more weight than any apology.
Maya didn’t answer immediately.
Because part of her wanted to forgive him.
And part of her was still the young woman standing alone in that hospital room, wondering why the man she loved never came.
“You were lied to,” she whispered.
“So were you.””
That was the first time they both acknowledged it.
Not one person hurt.
Both of them.
Someone had stolen years from both sides.
Evelyn stood quietly nearby, listening.
Then she spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
The older woman looked nervous.
“There are records.””
“What kind of records?””
“Your father kept private files.””
Adrian frowned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“His old office.””
Adrian stared.
“That room was cleared years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then what records are you talking about?””
Evelyn looked toward the hallway.
“The ones he told me never to destroy.””
A chill moved through the room.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
The housekeeper looked ashamed.
“Because after your father died, Lauren convinced me those files would only cause more pain.””
Adrian almost laughed.
Again.
Lauren.
Always Lauren.
“She was controlling everyone.””
Evelyn nodded.
“She was good at making people think they were doing the right thing.””
Adrian walked toward the hallway.
“Where are the files?””
Evelyn followed slowly.
“Hidden.””
Inside the old office, dust covered shelves that had not been touched in years.
The room still carried pieces of Adrian’s father.
The old wooden desk.
The leather chair.
The framed photographs.
A life that existed before betrayal became the family legacy.
Maya stood near the doorway with Noah.
Adrian noticed.
“You can come in.””
She hesitated.
“This was your family’s space.””
He looked at her.
“So are you.””
The words caught her off guard.
For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.
Then she stepped inside.
Evelyn moved toward the bookshelf.
She ran her fingers along the edge.
Then pressed a hidden latch.
A section of the shelf moved.
Behind it was a small compartment.
Inside were several sealed folders.
Adrian stared.
“How long have you known about this?””
“Since the day your father died.””
“Why hide them?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because he told me if anything happened to him, I should only give them to you when you were ready.””
Adrian frowned.
“Ready for what?””
Evelyn looked at Noah.
“For the truth.””
Adrian opened the first folder.
The documents inside were old.
Financial records.
Company reports.
Names.
Dates.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
One name.
A name he knew.
A name he never expected.
“Marcus Whitmore.””
Maya looked over.
“Lauren’s father?””
Adrian nodded slowly.
Marcus Whitmore had been one of his father’s closest business partners.
A respected executive.
A man who attended family events.
A man who had helped build Ashford Holdings.
But the documents told a different story.
Money transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Evidence of betrayal.
“He was stealing from the company,” Adrian whispered.
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father found out.””
“And then he died.””
The room went quiet.
Nobody wanted to say it.
But everyone understood.
Adrian looked through more papers.
Then he found something else.
A letter.
His father’s handwriting.
Adrian opened it.
Son,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the people closest to us.
Adrian stopped.
His breathing changed.
The letter continued.
Trust is dangerous when given without question. Marcus Whitmore is not the only person involved. Someone inside this family helped him.
Adrian looked up.
Inside this family.
The words stayed in his mind.
Maya noticed his expression.
“What is it?””
He handed her the letter.
She read silently.
Then looked up.
“Someone in your family?””
Adrian nodded.
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Who is this?””
A voice responded.
Older.
Male.
Calm.
“Adrian.””
His entire body went still.
Because he knew that voice.
“Marcus.””
Maya looked at him.
The name alone explained everything.
The man on the phone laughed softly.
“I see you found your father’s files.””
Adrian’s grip tightened.
“You knew.””
“I always knew you would.””
“Where is Lauren?””
A pause.
Then Marcus said:
“She’s not the person you should be looking for.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you still don’t understand what your father discovered.””
The call crackled.
Then Marcus delivered the words that changed everything.
“Ask Maya what her father really did the night he died.””
The line went dead.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
And looked at Maya.
Again.
Another secret.
May you like
Another wound.
Another piece of the truth waiting to break them apart.
