Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed
Maya had imagined this moment before.
Not this house.
Not this room.
Not with Adrian standing in front of her holding the son they had both lost.
But she had imagined the question.
What happened that night?
For three years, she had carried the answer alone.
She had carried it through sleepless nights, through doctor appointments, through moments when Noah asked why other children had fathers who came to school events and his didn’t.
She had carried it because she thought the truth would destroy whatever fragile peace she had built.
But now there was no hiding.
Not from Adrian.
Not from herself.
“I was afraid,” Maya whispered.
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at Noah.
The little boy rested peacefully against him, unaware that the adults around him were opening wounds that never healed.
“I was afraid that if I told you everything, you would hate me.””
The words surprised him.
Adrian frowned.
“Hate you?””
Maya nodded.
“Because I made a choice.””
The room became still.
Evelyn looked away.
She already knew.
Adrian noticed.
“You knew about this too?””
The housekeeper closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
His jaw tightened.
“So everyone knew something except me.””
Maya flinched.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
The pain in his voice was worse than anger.
Because he wasn’t just asking for information.
He was asking why the woman he loved had also kept something from him.
Maya took a shaky breath.
“The night Noah was born…”
She stopped.
The memory came rushing back.
The hospital lights.
The fear.
The loneliness.
The moment she realized she couldn’t trust anyone around her.
“I went into labor early.””
Adrian listened carefully.
“I called you.””
“I know.””
“No, Adrian.””
Her eyes met his.
“You don’t.””
The room went quiet.
“I called you because I was scared. I was alone. I didn’t know what was happening.””
Adrian looked down.
“I never got the call.””
“I know.””
Maya swallowed.
“Because someone answered.””
His eyes lifted.
“What?””
Maya nodded.
“Someone answered your phone.””
A chill moved through the room.
“Who?””
Maya looked toward Evelyn.
Then back at him.
“Lauren.””
Adrian went completely still.
“She had your phone?””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“She had access to everything. Your office. Your schedule. Your messages.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“But why would she answer my personal phone?””
“Because she knew you were in a meeting.””
A pause.
“She told me you couldn’t talk.””
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
“And then?””
Maya looked down.
“Then she told me she would make sure you knew.””
“But she didn’t.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“She didn’t.””
Adrian stared at her.
“Why didn’t you call again?””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“I did.””
That answer hit him.
“Then why—”
“Because after Noah was born, Lauren came to the hospital.””
Maya’s voice became quieter.
“She told me you had made a decision.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“What decision?””
“She said you didn’t want a child.””
The words felt like a physical blow.
Maya continued.
“She said you wanted your life back.””
Adrian shook his head slowly.
“No.””
“I know that now.””
Her tears fell.
“But I was twenty-six years old, alone in a hospital room, holding my newborn son, and the woman who worked beside you was telling me the man I loved had chosen not to be there.””
Adrian looked away.
He couldn’t defend himself.
Because he wasn’t there.
Even if it wasn’t his fault, he wasn’t there.
“What did you do?””
Maya’s voice dropped.
“I left.””
“Just like that?””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“Nothing about it was simple.””
She explained the months afterward.
The apartment she could barely afford.
The jobs she took.
The nights she cried quietly so Noah wouldn’t wake up.
The moments she almost called Adrian again.
Almost.
“But every time I tried, I was told the same thing.””
“What?””
“That you had moved on.””
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“Who told you that?””
Maya hesitated.
“Lauren.””
The name sat between them like poison.
Adrian looked toward the phone still in his hand.
Lauren had hung up.
She had escaped the conversation.
But she hadn’t escaped the damage.
“Then what is the secret?”” Adrian asked.
Maya wiped her face.
“The secret is that I found out the truth months later.””
“What truth?””
“That Lauren lied.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“Not just about you.””
Adrian waited.
Maya’s voice became almost a whisper.
“She lied about Noah being in danger.””
The room went silent.
Adrian’s face changed.
“What?””
“She told me there were people watching me.””
Maya swallowed.
“She said if I kept trying to contact you, they would use Noah against me.””
Adrian stared.
“Did you believe her?””
“At first, yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she showed me things.””
“What things?””
Maya looked down.
“Information about you. About your business. About people who wanted to hurt you.””
Adrian became more alert.
“So she made you think she was protecting you.””
“Yes.””
Maya nodded.
“She made herself the only person I could trust.””
Adrian finally understood.
Lauren didn’t just separate them.
She isolated Maya.
She created a world where every path back to him disappeared.
“She controlled the story,” Adrian whispered.
“Yes.””
Maya looked at him.
“And I believed it.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Noah stirred.
“Daddy?””
Adrian immediately softened.
“I’m here.””
The little boy opened his eyes slightly.
“Are we going home?””
The question broke something inside Maya.
Because Noah didn’t know which home he meant.
The apartment where he grew up.
Or the mansion where he had just found his father.
Adrian looked at Maya.
Then at Noah.
“We’re going to figure everything out.””
It was not a promise of perfection.
It was a promise of presence.
And for the first time in years, Maya saw the man she remembered.
Not the powerful businessman.
Not the man from magazines.
The man who once held her hand when she was afraid.
But before anyone could say more, one of the guards rushed back into the foyer.
“Mr. Ashford.””
Adrian looked over.
“What?””
The guard hesitated.
“We found something.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?””
The guard looked toward Maya.
“It’s from Lauren.””
He held out a small device.
“No message. No explanation.””
Adrian took it.
The screen remained dark.
Then it turned on.
A single recording began.
Lauren’s voice filled the foyer.
“If you’re hearing this, then you know the truth about Noah.””
Everyone froze.
Adrian stared at the device.
Lauren continued.
“But you still don’t know the whole truth.””
Maya’s face went pale.
Adrian noticed.
“Why do you look scared?””
May you like
Maya whispered:
“Because I know what she’s about to say.””
