Chapter 10: The Son My Husband Hid From Me

Marcus didn't speak for almost a full minute.

He stood in Margaret's living room, staring at her as though she had just told him the world was ending.

Then he turned toward me.

“Eleanor, I swear I didn't know.””

I couldn't answer.

My mind was still trapped on Margaret's last sentence.

Your future son-in-law is the person who raised your biological son.

Vanessa.

The woman who had kicked my vacuum hose.

The woman who had called me filthy.

The woman who had offered me half a million dollars to keep quiet.

She had been connected to my family long before she ever entered the Grand Meridian.

“Margaret,” I whispered, “tell me exactly what happened.””

My sister sat down.

“I was twenty-nine. Richard Reed had already been paying the hospital to falsify adoption records. He knew I was pregnant because I had gone to him for money.””

“Why would you go to Richard?””

“Because he controlled the company where my husband worked. After my marriage collapsed, I owed money to people who weren't willing to wait.””

She wiped her eyes.

“He offered to clear my debts if I helped him with the adoption.””

“And you agreed.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Margaret continued.

“When you gave birth, the hospital had two newborn boys. Yours and mine. Richard wanted both children moved because he believed Daniel had discovered the operation.””

“Why didn't Daniel go to the police?””

“He had evidence, but Richard controlled the hospital records, the security department, and several senior officials. He knew that if Daniel went public, he could make it look like Daniel had stolen the children himself.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What happened to the boys?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Your father arranged for Nathan to be placed with a wealthy couple. They couldn't have children, and they were told the adoption was legitimate.””

“And Eleanor's baby?””

“Daniel found out Richard intended to sell him to another family overseas.””

I gripped the back of a chair.

“What did Daniel do?””

“He switched the records again. He took your baby before the transfer could happen and arranged for someone he trusted to hide him.””

“Who?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Arthur Whitmore.””

I closed my eyes.

Arthur had been protecting my son all these years.

Margaret reached into her cabinet and removed another photograph.

This one showed Daniel standing beside a young woman holding a toddler.

The child had dark hair and a small birthmark beneath his left ear.

I touched the photograph.

“Who is this?””

“Your son.””

“How old?””

“About two.””

I stared at the picture.

The little boy was smiling.

Daniel stood behind him with one hand resting on his shoulder.

On the back was a name.

*Christopher.*

My biological son had grown up believing his parents were someone else.

I pressed the photograph against my chest.

“Where is he now?””

Margaret looked toward Marcus.

“Vanessa knows.””

I turned sharply.

“Why?””

“Because the family who raised Christopher eventually became involved with Richard's business. Their son married into the Reed family.””

Marcus went pale.

“Vanessa's family?””

Margaret nodded.

“Her father adopted Christopher.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at the photograph again.

My son had grown up in the same family that had helped steal him.

And Vanessa had known.

“Why did Daniel let that happen?”” I whispered.

Margaret shook her head.

“He didn't have a choice. The family agreed to protect Christopher as long as Daniel stayed away. They threatened to tell him the child would be taken somewhere he could never find him if he tried to interfere.””

I felt tears sliding down my cheeks.

“My husband gave up his own son to keep him alive.””

Margaret nodded.

“He visited him whenever he could. He watched him grow up from a distance.””

I turned toward Marcus.

“Where is Vanessa's father?””

Marcus looked at his phone.

“Edward Cole died four years ago.””

“Then who has Christopher?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Vanessa.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Where?””

“She's been keeping him close. He works for one of her family's companies.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

“I'm calling security.””

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“We need to find him before she moves him.””

“Then we go ourselves.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Eleanor, Vanessa has people working for her. We need to be careful.””

I looked at the photograph.

Christopher was perhaps twenty-seven now.

Twenty-seven years.

Twenty-seven birthdays I hadn't celebrated.

Twenty-seven years of wondering whether my baby had survived.

“I have been careful for eighteen years,” I said.

“I'm finished waiting.””

We left Bellhaven shortly before sunset.

Margaret refused to come with us.

She said she needed time to prepare the remaining documents and would contact us when she had found the original hospital records.

Marcus drove.

I sat beside him, holding the photograph.

Halfway through the journey, he spoke.

“My father told me I was an only child.””

I looked at him.

“I'm sorry.””

He laughed without humor.

“Apparently, I have two brothers. One who grew up with another family and one who grew up believing he was dead.””

He glanced at me.

“Do you think Christopher will want to meet you?””

“I don't know.””

“What if he hates you?””

I looked out the window.

“Then I'll let him hate me. I just want him to have the choice.””

We arrived at the address shortly after seven.

It was a large modern estate behind an iron gate.

The security guard recognized Marcus's car.

He opened the gate without asking questions.

Inside, the house was dark except for one room on the second floor.

A man stood behind the window.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Wearing a white shirt.

I stepped out of the car.

My heart began pounding.

Marcus approached the front door and rang the bell.

A housekeeper opened it.

“Can I help you?””

“We're looking for Christopher Cole,” Marcus said.

“Mr. Cole isn't expecting visitors.””

“Please tell him Marcus Reed is here.””

The housekeeper hesitated.

Then she stepped aside.

We entered.

A few seconds later, a man descended the staircase.

He was taller than the boy in the photograph.

His hair was dark, his jaw strong, and his eyes unmistakably familiar.

I couldn't breathe.

He stopped at the bottom step.

“Marcus?””

Marcus nodded.

“We need to talk.””

Christopher looked at me.

“Who's she?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then he noticed the photograph in my hand.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

I held it out.

He took it.

For a long time, he stared at the picture.

Then he looked up.

“That's my father.””

I shook my head gently.

“No, sweetheart.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me?””

I swallowed.

“That's Daniel Hayes. Your biological father.””

Christopher went completely still.

Then he asked the question I had been afraid of.

“Who are you?””

I took a trembling breath.

“I'm your mother.””

Before he could respond, a woman's voice came from the staircase.

“Christopher, step away from her.””

Vanessa stood above us.

She was holding a small black folder.

Her expression was colder than I had ever seen it.

“Eleanor,” she said.

“You really should have stayed in the hotel.””

Christopher looked between us.

“Vanessa, what's going on?””

She descended the stairs slowly.

Then she looked directly at me.

“Your son has spent twenty-seven years believing his life was normal.””

She smiled.

“Why don't you tell him what you did to get him?””

I stared at her.

“I didn't do anything.””

Vanessa opened the folder.

And pulled out a document bearing my signature.

A document stating that I had voluntarily surrendered my newborn son.

Christopher looked at it.

Then he looked at me.

“Is this true?””

I felt the ground disappear beneath my feet.

Because the signature was mine.

May you like

But I had never signed that document.

And Vanessa knew exactly why.
