Chapter 14: The Last Lie in the Grand Meridian

When the emergency lights came on, Marcus was on the floor.

Olivia was crouched beside the table.

Sam was nowhere to be seen.

And the original hospital ledger had disappeared.

“Marcus!””

I dropped beside him.

Blood spread across his shirt near his shoulder.

He gritted his teeth.

“I'm okay.””

“You've been shot!””

“It's a graze.””

Olivia pressed a folded towel against the wound.

“Someone came through the service entrance.””

I looked toward the open door.

A shadow disappeared around the corner.

“Stay here,” I told them.

Marcus grabbed my wrist.

“No. Don't follow him.””

But I was already standing.

I ran into the corridor.

At the far end, the service elevator doors were closing.

I reached them just in time to see a familiar face through the narrowing gap.

Vanessa.

She held the leather folder against her chest.

Our eyes met.

Then the doors closed.

I slammed my hand against the button.

Nothing.

The elevator descended.

I turned toward the stairwell.

And ran.

By the time I reached the lobby, Vanessa was already crossing the entrance.

“Vanessa!””

She turned.

For a moment, she looked surprised.

Then she smiled.

“Still chasing people, Eleanor?””

I walked toward her.

“Give me the ledger.””

She lifted the folder.

“Looking for this?””

“It's the original hospital record.””

“It's much more than that.””

She opened it.

Inside were dozens of financial documents.

“Richard kept copies of everything. Every payment. Every adoption. Every forged identity.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why are you running?””

“Because those records are worth more than this entire hotel.””

I stared at her.

“You're planning to sell them?””

“I'm planning to survive.””

She pulled a small envelope from the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman stood outside a London university.

Grace.

My daughter.

Vanessa smiled.

“Your little girl has been living a very comfortable life. It would be unfortunate if someone told her that her parents never wanted her.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“You wouldn't dare.””

“Wouldn't I?””

She showed me her phone.

A message was already written.

Your mother abandoned you.

All she had to do was press send.

I stepped forward.

Vanessa raised her phone.

“Don't.””

I stopped.

“You've taken enough from my family.””

She laughed.

“Your family? You mean the husband who disappeared? The son who wasn't yours? The daughter you never knew existed?””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“You've spent your entire life believing you were a victim. But you were never as innocent as you think.””

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the lobby.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Ask Daniel why he handed Richard those hospital records.””

Before I could answer, a security alarm sounded.

Two officers rushed through the entrance.

“Vanessa Cole! Drop the folder!””

She turned.

Then she threw the leather folder toward me.

I caught it.

Vanessa ran.

One officer followed her.

The other approached me.

“Are you Eleanor Hayes?””

“Yes.””

“There's someone waiting for you in the security office.””

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“Samuel Brooks.””

Sam sat alone in the security office.

His face was bruised.

A bandage covered his forehead.

He looked older than I remembered.

When I entered, he stood.

“Eleanor.””

I placed the leather folder on the table.

“Start talking.””

Sam lowered his head.

“Daniel gave Richard the hospital records because he wanted to protect you.””

“That's what Vanessa said.””

“He discovered that Richard had already chosen which child to keep. The other baby was going to be transferred overseas.””

“Grace.””

Sam nodded.

“Daniel knew he couldn't save both children himself. He asked Richard to delay the transfer. In exchange, he handed over copies of the hospital records.””

I stared at him.

“So he cooperated with Richard?””

“Only long enough to get the children out.””

I sat down.

Sam continued.

“Daniel arranged for Christopher to stay with Edward Cole. He believed Edward would protect him because he wanted an heir. Grace was sent to a family in England.””

“Why didn't he take them both?””

“Because Richard was watching him. If Daniel disappeared with either child, Richard would have killed all three of you.””

I closed my eyes.

For eighteen years, I had imagined Daniel abandoning us.

Now I was learning that every terrible decision he made had been part of an attempt to keep our children alive.

But one question remained.

“Why did Daniel give Richard the original records?””

Sam looked at me.

“Because he believed Richard would destroy them after the transfer.””

“And did he?””

“No.””

Sam removed a small key from his pocket.

“Richard kept the original ledger in a private vault beneath the hotel. Vanessa has the financial copies, but the hospital records are still there.””

I took the key.

“Where is the vault?””

“Behind the old wine cellar.””

I stood.

Sam caught my sleeve.

“Eleanor, there's one more thing.””

I turned.

“Please don't tell me there's another secret.””

He swallowed.

“Daniel never told you why he chose to disappear instead of coming home.””

I stared at him.

“He told me he was protecting the children.””

“That was part of it.””

“What was the rest?””

Sam took a deep breath.

“Richard had evidence that could have put you in prison.””

My stomach tightened.

“What evidence?””

“The original hospital footage.””

I felt cold.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Sam looked directly into my eyes.

“The footage shows you signing the first adoption document.””

I shook my head.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know.””

“Then what did the footage show?””

Sam lowered his voice.

“You were unconscious. Someone placed your hand on the paper.””

I felt sick.

“And Daniel?””

“He was there.””

The room went silent.

“He watched it happen?””

Sam nodded.

“And when Richard threatened to release the footage, Daniel took the blame for everything. He allowed the world to believe he had stolen the children.””

I sat down.

My husband had sacrificed his reputation, his freedom, and eighteen years of his life.

All because someone had created evidence that I had willingly surrendered my own children.

I looked at the key in my hand.

“Where is the vault?””

Sam gave me the directions.

Then he looked toward the door.

“Eleanor, you need to hurry. Vanessa knows about it.””

The old wine cellar was beneath the hotel's original east wing.

Marcus met me there, his shoulder bandaged.

Christopher had joined him.

“I thought you were supposed to be resting,” I said.

Marcus smiled weakly.

“I've had enough people telling me what I can and can't do.””

Christopher stood beside him.

“Let's finish this.””

We found the vault behind a row of wooden wine racks.

The brass key turned with difficulty.

The door opened.

Inside were several metal boxes.

I found the one marked 2008.

It contained the original hospital ledger, a video cassette, and a sealed letter addressed to me.

I opened the letter first.

Daniel's handwriting.

My Eleanor,

If you're reading this, then I failed to return before the truth found you.

I need you to know that I never abandoned our children.

I watched Christopher grow up. I knew where Grace was. I sent money whenever I could.

But there is one thing I could never bring myself to tell you.

The night you gave birth, I discovered that the hospital had already planned to separate the babies.

I tried to stop them.

But I arrived too late.

When I saw you unconscious, I made a decision that I have regretted every day since.

I allowed Richard to believe I had cooperated.

I signed the transfer papers to buy time.

I thought I could save all of you.

I was wrong.

There is a recording in this box. It will show you who actually ordered the switch.

But before you watch it, understand this.

The person responsible is someone you once trusted with your life.

I lowered the letter.

Marcus inserted the cassette into an old player stored inside the vault.

The screen flickered.

A hospital corridor appeared.

The date was November 14, 2008.

I watched myself being wheeled past the maternity ward.

Daniel followed beside the bed.

Then a woman stepped into view.

She was wearing a white coat.

She turned toward the camera.

I gasped.

It was Margaret.

But she wasn't alone.

A man entered the frame.

Richard Reed.

He handed her a document.

Margaret signed it.

Then Daniel stepped forward.

He said something the camera couldn't capture.

Richard laughed.

And Margaret turned toward him.

Her next words were perfectly clear.

“Don't worry. Eleanor will never know that I switched the babies.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Christopher paused the recording.

“Your sister?””

I nodded.

But the footage continued.

Margaret stepped toward the camera.

She looked directly into it.

Then she said one final sentence.

“After all, she still believes I'm dead.””

The screen went black.

I stared at it.

Margaret hadn't merely helped Richard.

She had orchestrated the entire operation.

She had allowed me to mourn children who were alive.

She had pretended to be dead.

And she had spent years watching me suffer.

Then the vault door slammed shut.

Someone had locked us inside.

A voice came through the small ventilation opening.

“I'm sorry, Eleanor.””

Margaret.

My sister.

“There's one final thing you need to see.””

A red light began blinking above the door.

Then she spoke.

“Richard wasn't the man who paid me.””

I looked at Marcus.

Margaret's voice continued.

“The money came from someone much closer to you.””

May you like

And then she said the name.

“Daniel.””
