Chapter 12: The Husband Who Asked Me to Stay Away

The rehabilitation center stood on a quiet hill outside the city.

It was surrounded by pine trees and a high iron fence.

The security guard at the entrance refused to let us through until Marcus made three phone calls.

Even then, he allowed only two visitors.

I chose Christopher.

Marcus stayed outside to coordinate with the police.

As we walked down the corridor, my heart pounded so hard I could barely hear my footsteps.

A nurse stopped outside Room 214.

“Mr. Hayes is awake,” she said.

“But he's very weak.””

I nodded.

“Can I see him?””

She opened the door.

And there he was.

Daniel.

My husband.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair had turned almost completely gray. A small oxygen tube rested beneath his nose, and his hands lay motionless on the white blanket.

But when he turned his head, I recognized his eyes.

The same eyes that had looked at me across our kitchen table.

The same eyes that had smiled when I burned our first anniversary dinner.

The same eyes I had searched for in every crowd for eighteen years.

I covered my mouth.

“Daniel.””

He stared at me.

For a moment, he looked as though he were seeing a ghost.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

“Eleanor?””

I rushed to his bedside.

I took his hand.

It was cold.

Real.

Alive.

“You're here,” I whispered.

He closed his eyes.

“I'm sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No. Don't say that yet.””

He looked at Christopher.

Then his expression changed.

“Christopher?””

Christopher stepped closer.

“Hello.””

Daniel's lips trembled.

“My boy.””

Christopher looked down.

“Why didn't you come for me?””

Daniel tried to sit up, but the nurse had warned us not to let him move.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Of losing you.””

Christopher stood silently.

Daniel looked back at me.

“Eleanor, you shouldn't have come.””

I almost laughed.

“Eighteen years, Daniel. Eighteen years without a single word. And now you tell me I shouldn't have come?””

He lowered his eyes.

“I didn't want you to see what I'd become.””

I looked at the hospital equipment.

“You're alive. That's enough.””

He shook his head.

“No. You don't understand.””

I sat beside him.

“Then explain.””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Richard Reed didn't just threaten me. He controlled everything. Every address I used.

Every person I contacted. Every attempt I made to reach you.””

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“Because the first officer I contacted was working for him.””

He looked toward Christopher.

“After I found out about the adoption operation, I discovered something worse. Richard had been using the children's identities to hide company assets.””

Christopher frowned.

“That's why I was given to Edward Cole?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your adoption was part of a financial arrangement. Edward wanted an heir. Richard wanted to conceal the money.””

Christopher looked down.

“Did you know Vanessa was involved?””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you stop her?””

“Because she wasn't the person I feared most.””

I leaned closer.

“Who were you afraid of?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Margaret.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“My sister?””

Daniel nodded.

“She helped Richard arrange the adoption. But she wasn't acting alone.””

I stared at him.

“Who else?””

Daniel took my hand.

“Eleanor, before I disappeared, I discovered that someone had been replacing the hospital records. The person responsible had access to the maternity ward.””

I remembered Margaret's confession.

The two babies.

The switched records.

The forged signatures.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked at Christopher.

“Your mother gave birth to two children.””

Christopher frowned.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“One was Christopher. The other was a girl.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“A girl?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was born twenty minutes after Christopher.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“I don't know.””

Christopher stepped closer.

“Are you saying I have a twin sister?””

“Yes.””

I gripped Daniel's hand.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought she had been killed.””

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“The second baby was transferred to another hospital. When I found the records, her file had been destroyed.””

I began crying.

Two children.

A son I had only just found.

And a daughter I hadn't even known existed.

“Who took her?”” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone who had access to the original hospital records.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then he whispered a name.

“Olivia Grant.””

I froze.

Olivia.

The hotel's assistant general manager.

The young woman who had escorted me to Marcus.

The woman who had called me from the executive office.

I looked at Christopher.

He was equally stunned.

“Why would she take a baby?””

Daniel shook his head.

“She didn't take her. She was the baby.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Eleanor, Olivia is your daughter.””

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Then the room door opened.

A nurse stepped inside.

“I'm sorry. Visiting hours are over.””

Daniel gripped my hand.

“Wait.””

He looked at Christopher.

“There's something else you both need to know.””

He reached beneath his pillow and removed a small envelope.

It was sealed with red wax.

I recognized the golden falcon stamped into it.

“What's inside?”” I asked.

“The original adoption ledger.””

My heart began racing.

“Where did you get it?””

“Arthur recovered it before Richard died.””

Daniel handed it to Christopher.

“Don't give it to Marcus. Don't give it to the police until you understand what's written inside.””

Christopher examined the envelope.

Then he noticed a second name written beneath the wax seal.

Olivia Grant.

Daniel nodded.

“She knows who she is. She's been working at the Grand Meridian because she's been trying to find the ledger.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she believes you abandoned her.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She was told that her mother had willingly surrendered her.””

I felt tears sliding down my cheeks.

Another child.

Another lie.

Another lifetime stolen.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“And Eleanor, there's one more thing.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

He looked at Christopher.

Then at me.

“The person who switched the babies wasn't Richard Reed, Margaret, or Vanessa.””

His fingers tightened around mine.

“It was someone who has been standing beside you throughout this entire investigation.””

I felt a chill move through my body.

“Who?””

Daniel tried to answer.

But the heart monitor suddenly began beeping faster.

The nurse rushed toward the bed.

“Mr. Hayes, you need to calm down.””

Daniel grabbed my wrist.

“Eleanor... the person is—”

His eyes widened.

Then his hand went limp.

The monitor sounded an alarm.

Christopher shouted for help.

Two nurses rushed into the room.

I was pushed backward as they began working on Daniel.

“Daniel!””

One nurse pulled me toward the door.

“Ma'am, please wait outside!””

I struggled.

“That's my husband!””

The door closed.

Through the narrow glass window, I watched the medical team surround him.

Christopher stood beside me, holding the sealed envelope.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Olivia.

Mrs. Hayes, I know you've met Daniel.

Another message followed.

Please don't believe everything he told you.

Then a third.

I'm not the daughter you're looking for.

I stared at the screen.

A final message arrived.

And I know exactly who switched the babies.

Below it was a photograph.

It showed Olivia standing beside someone in the hotel basement.

Someone wearing a gray housekeeping uniform.

Someone whose face I knew better than my own.

I dropped the phone.

Because the person standing beside Olivia was me.

May you like

But the photograph was dated eighteen years earlier.

And I had never seen it before.
