Chapter 11: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Christopher held the document with both hands.

His eyes moved slowly across the page.

At the bottom was my full name.

Eleanor Margaret Hayes.

My signature.

The date was twenty-seven years earlier.

And beneath it was a statement declaring that I had voluntarily surrendered my newborn son to Edward Cole.

I stepped toward him.

“Christopher, I never signed that.””

He pulled the paper away.

“Then why is your name on it?””

“Because someone forged it.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Convenient.””

Marcus moved between them.

“Vanessa, give us the original document.””

She held it against her chest.

“No.””

“Then let me see the registration number.””

“Why?””

“Because the document is supposedly from the hospital. Every legitimate adoption record has a registration number.””

Vanessa's smile faded.

Christopher looked at Marcus.

“What's happening?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Your family lied to you.””

Christopher shook his head.

“Edward was my father.””

“He raised you,” Marcus replied.

“But he wasn't your biological father.””

Christopher turned toward me.

“Is that why you're here?””

I nodded.

“Your biological father was Daniel Hayes. He loved you. He never stopped looking for you.””

Christopher looked away.

“Then where is he?””

I couldn't answer.

“Where is he?”” he repeated.

“He's alive.””

His expression changed.

“Alive?””

I nodded.

“He's been trying to reach you.””

Christopher stepped backward.

“Why didn't he come?””

“Because he believed staying away was the only way to protect you.””

Vanessa clapped slowly.

“How touching.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Stop.””

She ignored him.

“Christopher, don't believe them. Your father spent years building a life for you. He gave you everything.””

“He was a good man,” Christopher said quietly.

Vanessa nodded.

“He was.””

I looked at her.

“Then why are you so afraid of the truth?””

Her face hardened.

“Because the truth is that your husband stole from my family.””

“Your family stole my children.””

Christopher flinched.

I realized he was listening to every word.

So I took a breath and spoke more gently.

“I don't expect you to call me Mom. I don't expect you to forgive anyone. I just want you to know that I didn't abandon you.””

Christopher stared at me.

“Do you have proof?””

I reached into my handbag and removed Daniel's photograph.

Then I placed the wedding ring beside it.

“Your father kept this for you.””

Christopher picked up the ring.

He turned it over.

There was a tiny engraving inside.

*For our first son. Love, Eleanor.*

His face changed.

“First son?””

I nodded.

“Daniel and I believed we had lost our first baby. Then we discovered there had been another child.””

Christopher looked confused.

“Another child?””

“Nathan.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Who is Nathan?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“Your brother.””

Christopher stared at him.

“And you?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Your half-brother.””

For several seconds, Christopher said nothing.

Then he laughed once.

A broken, disbelieving sound.

“So my entire family is a lie?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Christopher, come upstairs. We can discuss this privately.””

He looked at her.

“Did you know?””

She didn't answer.

“Did you know who my biological parents were?””

Vanessa's silence was enough.

Christopher's face hardened.

“You knew.””

“I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

“From people who wanted to use you.””

He held up the forged document.

“Then why did you hide this?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Because Edward wanted you to inherit the company without complications.””

Christopher looked at her.

“What company?””

She hesitated.

Then Marcus answered.

“Cole Meridian Holdings.””

Christopher frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

“Your adoptive father transferred controlling shares into your name,” Marcus explained.

“The company owns several properties, including part of the Grand Meridian.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Marcus, stop talking.””

But Marcus continued.

“Richard Reed and Edward Cole were business partners. They used the adoption operation to conceal financial transfers and move assets between companies.””

Christopher looked at the document again.

“So I was adopted because they wanted me to inherit money?””

“Not exactly,” I said.

Vanessa laughed.

“Don't pretend you understand.””

I stepped toward her.

“Then explain why you needed me to sign that settlement yesterday.””

She looked away.

“You don't understand the business.””

“Try me.””

Marcus took out his phone.

“I found another recording.””

He played it.

Richard Reed's voice filled the room.

“Once Christopher reaches twenty-five, the shares transfer automatically. Make sure he never discovers the original adoption agreement. If Eleanor comes back, use the old surrender document.””

Then Vanessa's voice.

“And if she refuses?””

Richard laughed.

“Then remind her what happened to Daniel.””

The recording ended.

Christopher slowly lowered the paper.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You threatened his life?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I did what I had to do.””

“Why?””

“Because your father was going to destroy everything.””

Christopher shook his head.

“You mean the man who raised me?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your biological father is a criminal.””

“Then why did you hide him?””

She had no answer.

Suddenly, the front door opened.

A security guard hurried inside.

“Miss Cole, we have a problem.””

Vanessa turned.

“What?””

“Police are outside.””

Her face drained of color.

Marcus looked at her.

“I sent the recordings to the authorities.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You betrayed me?””

“No,” he said.

“I stopped helping you lie.””

The guard moved toward her.

But Vanessa was faster.

She threw the black folder at Marcus, then ran toward the kitchen entrance.

Christopher started after her.

I caught his arm.

“Don't.””

“She knows where my father is!””

“I know.””

Vanessa disappeared through the rear door.

A moment later, we heard an engine roar.

She was gone.

Christopher stood motionless.

Then he turned toward me.

“Do you know where Daniel is?””

I nodded.

“A private hospital outside the city.””

“Then take me there.””

Marcus looked at his watch.

“We should wait for the police.””

Christopher shook his head.

“I've waited twenty-seven years. I'm not waiting another minute.””

We arrived at the hospital just before midnight.

A nurse at reception recognized Daniel's name.

She looked at us carefully.

“Are you family?””

I stepped forward.

“I'm his wife.””

Her expression softened.

“Then I'm sorry.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

“He was transferred two hours ago.””

“Transferred where?””

The nurse checked the computer.

“I'm not authorized to disclose that information.””

Marcus showed his identification.

“I'm a representative of the hotel's ownership. This is an emergency.””

The nurse hesitated.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Someone came here pretending to be his daughter.””

I looked at Christopher.

“His daughter?””

The nurse nodded.

“She showed identification and requested a private transfer.””

“Who was she?””

The nurse glanced toward the security camera.

“Vanessa Cole.””

I felt my stomach drop.

She had known we would come.

She had reached Daniel first.

The nurse printed a transfer form.

I took it with trembling fingers.

At the bottom was the name of the receiving facility.

A private rehabilitation center.

And beside the signature authorizing the transfer was another familiar name.

Samuel Brooks.

I stared at it.

Sam was still involved.

Marcus looked at me.

“Eleanor, we need to find him.””

I nodded.

Then Christopher pointed toward the final line on the form.

There was a handwritten note.

Patient requested that Eleanor Hayes not be informed.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

May you like

Why would Daniel refuse to see me?

Unless there was something he had done that he was afraid I would discover.
