Chapter 4: The Brother Who Was Buried Alive
The name on the phone screen stayed there for six seconds.
Six seconds that felt like an entire lifetime.
*Dr. Daniel Hale.*
Richard’s older brother.
The man whose obituary I had seen five years ago.
The man whose funeral Richard had attended wearing a black suit and an expression of perfect grief.
The man everyone believed was dead.
Emily stared at the phone as if it were a ghost.
“No,” she whispered.
The ringing stopped.
Nobody moved.
The silence afterward was heavier than the sound.
Detective Morgan looked between us.
“Someone want to explain why a dead man is calling a phone connected to Richard Hale?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew how.
I looked at Emily.
“You said he helped Richard hide you.””
Emily’s face had lost all color.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked toward the stairs, where Richard had been taken away.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Because Daniel was never dead.””
A cold wave moved through me.
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted someone to laugh and say this had all been a misunderstanding.
But that was the problem.
Too many impossible things had become real tonight.
A locked basement.
A missing sister.
A husband’s lies.
A secret recording.
A dead man’s phone call.
Nothing about my life made sense anymore.
Detective Morgan crossed his arms.
“Start from the beginning.””
Emily looked exhausted.
“I don’t know the whole story.””
“But you know enough.””
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked like the same sister who used to tell me bedtime stories when we were children.
The same person who always tried to protect me.
“I found out about Daniel before I disappeared.””
I frowned.
“Daniel was already dead.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“He wanted people to believe he was.””
The detective pulled out his notebook.
“Why?””
“Because Richard and Daniel were working together.””
My stomach tightened.
“Working together doing what?””
Emily looked at me.
“The foundation wasn’t just Richard’s.””
A terrible realization began forming.
“Daniel’s?””
She nodded.
“They built it together.””
The Richard Hale Foundation.
The name that appeared on every charity event.
Every newspaper article.
Every television interview.
The foundation that made my husband look like a hero.
But behind the cameras…
Behind the donations…
Behind the speeches about saving lives…
There was something else.
“Daniel was the medical expert,” Emily continued.
“Richard handled money, connections, and reputation.””
Detective Morgan looked serious.
“And what did Daniel do?””
Emily hesitated.
That hesitation told me the answer would be something I didn’t want to hear.
“He created the programs.””
“What programs?””
Emily looked at Lily.
Then back at the detective.
“Human testing.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I felt Lily’s hand in mine.
Small.
Warm.
Alive.
I squeezed it gently.
Detective Morgan looked toward the officers searching the basement.
“Did you find any records?””
“Not yet,” one officer called back.
Emily shook her head.
“You won’t find them here.””
“Where are they?””
“Richard’s office.””
I looked toward the mansion above us.
The room he had kept locked.
The room he protected more carefully than anything else.
The room I had never entered.
“Then we search it.””
Detective Morgan nodded.
“Already requested a warrant.””
Emily’s expression changed.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“He’ll know.””
Detective Morgan frowned.
“He’s already in custody.””
Emily shook her head.
“You think Richard works alone?””
Nobody answered.
“Richard is careful. He doesn’t keep everything in one place.””
She looked at the phone.
“And if Daniel is calling…”
Her voice faded.
I understood.
Someone was watching.
Someone knew.
A sudden noise came from upstairs.
A door slammed.
Every officer immediately turned.
One raised his weapon.
“Everyone stay here.””
The sound echoed through the mansion.
Then another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Controlled.
Coming from the second floor.
Detective Morgan signaled for two officers to move.
I pulled Lily closer.
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared at the top of the staircase.
For one terrifying second, I thought it was Richard.
But it wasn’t.
It was a woman.
She was probably in her fifties, wearing a dark coat and holding a leather handbag.
The officers moved instantly.
“Hands where we can see them.””
The woman froze.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””
“Identify yourself.””
She looked down the stairs.
Her eyes landed on Emily.
And she began crying.
“Emily.””
My sister went completely still.
“You.””
The woman stepped forward.
“I tried to find you.””
Emily’s expression hardened.
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
The woman’s face collapsed.
“I made a mistake.””
Detective Morgan stepped between them.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
Then at me.
“My name is Laura Bennett.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Emily reacted.
“She worked for Richard.””
Laura lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
My anger rose instantly.
“Then why are you here?””
She looked at Lily.
And that frightened me.
Everyone kept looking at my daughter.
Everyone knew something I didn’t.
“I came because he knows you found the basement.””
Detective Morgan narrowed his eyes.
“Who?””
Laura swallowed.
“Daniel.””
The mansion suddenly felt colder.
“He’s alive?””
Laura nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
She looked toward the windows.
“He was never far away.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What does that mean?””
Laura stepped closer.
“Richard was never the one in charge.””
The words landed like a bomb.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Emily.
I stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Laura looked terrified.
“I’m saying Richard was always the public face.””
She glanced at the phone.
“The person making the decisions was Daniel.””
Emily’s face changed.
“No.””
Laura nodded sadly.
“Yes.””
My mind raced.
Richard had always seemed powerful.
Confident.
Untouchable.
But what if that was just another performance?
What if the man I thought was the monster was only the person everyone could see?
“Why would Richard pretend Daniel was dead?”” I asked.
Laura looked at Emily.
“Because Daniel needed a new identity.””
“Why?””
“Because people were getting suspicious.””
The detective stepped forward.
“Suspicious of what?””
Laura opened her handbag.
Her hands shook as she pulled out a small envelope.
“I took this from Richard’s office before I came here.””
She handed it to Detective Morgan.
Inside was a photograph.
The detective looked at it.
Then his face changed.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
And my entire body went numb.
It was a picture of Lily.
Not a recent picture.
A picture from when she was four years old.
She was standing in the garden.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
Smiling.
On the back of the photograph, written in black ink, were four words:
*Subject confirmed. Begin observation.*
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
My voice barely existed.
Emily covered her mouth.
Detective Morgan looked at Laura.
“What is this?””
Laura’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know exactly.””
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I know what it looks like.””
“Then explain.””
Laura looked at Lily.
“Richard and Daniel were interested in one specific thing.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“Children who showed unusual memory retention.””
My blood turned cold.
Detective Morgan immediately stepped between Laura and Lily.
“What does that mean?””
Laura looked at me.
“It means Richard didn’t become afraid of Lily because she saw something.””
I felt my fingers go numb.
“Then why?””
Laura’s voice dropped.
“Because she remembered something she was never supposed to remember.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my daughter.
At the little girl who still slept with a nightlight.
The little girl who cried when cartoons ended sadly.
The little girl who had carried a secret bigger than any child should ever carry.
“Lily,” I whispered.
She looked up.
“Mommy?””
I knelt in front of her.
“Sweetheart…”
My voice broke.
“What do you remember?””
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then her eyes moved toward the basement door.
Toward the place where Emily had been hidden.
And she whispered:
“I remember the night Aunt Emily disappeared.””
Everyone froze.
I held my breath.
“What happened that night?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I saw Daddy and Uncle Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
“Uncle Daniel?””
She nodded slowly.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Uncle Daniel wasn’t trying to hide Aunt Emily.””
May you like
She looked terrified.
“He was trying to hide what happened to me.””
