Chapter 8: The Memory Hidden Inside Me
The room went silent.
Not the quiet kind.
The kind that comes before something breaks.
I stared at Richard’s face frozen on the computer screen, waiting for the next words.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to reveal it was another manipulation.
Because that was what Richard did.
He twisted reality until you questioned your own memories.
But this time was different.
This time, I was questioning myself.
“You weren’t Lily’s rescuer.””
The sentence repeated in my head.
“You were the reason Anna disappeared.””
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth.
Nobody moved.
Emily looked at me.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I stepped away from the computer.
“He’s lying.””
Daniel didn’t speak.
That frightened me.
Because if anyone understood Richard’s lies, it was him.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“I don’t know.””
The answer felt like a punch.
“You don’t know?””
“I know what Richard was capable of.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know what you remember.””
My chest tightened.
Remember.
That word.
Everyone kept using it.
As if there was something inside my own mind that had been hidden from me.
Detective Morgan stepped forward.
“Someone explain what’s happening.””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting beside Emily now, watching all of us with frightened eyes.
My daughter.
The one person who had always felt certain.
The one person who had never been a lie.
I walked back to the computer.
The video was paused.
Richard’s face stared back at me.
A man I had loved.
A man I had trusted.
A man who somehow knew a truth about me that I didn’t.
I pressed play.
Richard continued speaking.
“I know you’re angry.””
His voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
“I know you believe I’m the villain.””
A small smile appeared.
“That’s why I recorded this.””
He leaned back.
“Because eventually, Claire, you would find out.””
My fingers curled.
“Find out what?””
The detective looked at the screen.
The recording continued.
“You always believed you saved Lily.””
Richard paused.
“But you didn’t.””
My breathing became shallow.
“You found her.””
The screen flickered.
“You found Anna.””
My heart stopped.
The room disappeared.
A flash.
A memory.
A hallway.
A woman crying.
A baby’s scream.
I grabbed the desk.
“Claire?””
Emily rushed toward me.
I held up a hand.
“No.””
Because something was happening.
Something buried.
Something I had spent years forgetting.
The memory came in pieces.
A rainy night.
The mansion.
Richard shouting.
A woman standing near the front door.
Anna.
I knew her.
I didn’t know how.
But I knew her.
She looked terrified.
And she was holding a baby.
Lily.
A younger Lily.
Tiny.
Wrapped in a white blanket.
The memory shifted.
My own voice.
“Richard, what did you do?””
Then another voice.
Mine.
But different.
Angry.
Afraid.
“You said she was safe.””
I stumbled backward.
“No…”
Emily grabbed my shoulders.
“What did you see?””
I looked at her.
“I was there.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“I was there that night.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What night?””
“The night Anna disappeared.””
Nobody spoke.
Detective Morgan looked confused.
“But you said you didn’t know what happened.””
“I didn’t.””
The words came out broken.
“I really didn’t.””
And that was the terrifying part.
I wasn’t lying.
I had forgotten.
Richard hadn’t just hidden the truth from me.
He had helped me bury it.
The video continued.
Richard’s voice filled the room.
“You were there, Claire.””
He knew.
He knew exactly what I was remembering.
“You saw what Anna discovered.””
I stared at the screen.
“How?””
Richard smiled.
“You always underestimate how much I know about you.””
The detective moved closer.
“What is he talking about?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
But Daniel did.
“She was involved.””
Everyone turned.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Not willingly.””
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“Anna trusted Claire.””
Emily looked shocked.
“She trusted her?””
Daniel nodded.
“Anna knew Claire was the only person who would protect Lily.””
I felt tears forming.
“Then why does Richard say I caused her disappearance?””
Daniel looked at the computer.
“Because Richard changed the story.””
The video continued.
“You thought you were helping Anna escape.””
Richard’s voice became colder.
“But you made one mistake.””
A pause.
“You trusted me.””
My stomach dropped.
The memory returned.
A conversation.
Me crying.
Richard holding my hands.
“He’s dangerous, Claire.””
Anna’s voice.
“He knows.””
My voice.
“What do we do?””
Richard.
“Let me handle it.””
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
Because now I remembered.
I remembered trusting him.
I remembered giving him information.
I remembered telling him where Anna planned to go.
I remembered believing he was helping.
The worst part was…
I remembered why.
Because I loved him.
Because I thought he loved me.
The video continued.
“You told me where Anna was going.””
Richard looked directly into the camera.
“You gave me everything I needed.””
I covered my mouth.
Emily looked at me with tears.
“Claire…”
“I didn’t know.””
My voice cracked.
“I didn’t know.””
Nobody blamed me.
Nobody had to.
I blamed myself enough.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“That’s how Richard worked.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He never forced people to betray each other.””
He looked toward Lily.
“He convinced them they were doing the right thing.””
The truth hurt because it sounded exactly like Richard.
He didn’t break people.
He recruited them.
He made them participate.
Then he used their guilt as another chain.
The video ended.
The screen went black.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Morgan’s radio came alive.
A voice shouted:
“Detective, we have a problem.””
He grabbed it.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Richard Hale was never in custody.””
The detective frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“The man we transported wasn’t Richard.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“No.””
Detective Morgan looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel whispered:
“A decoy.””
The detective turned.
“You knew this could happen?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I knew Richard had plans.””
“You let him escape?””
“No.””
“Then where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke.
Quietly.
“He’s going to the place.””
I turned.
“What place?””
She looked terrified.
“The place Daddy said nobody would ever find.””
My heart sank.
“Where?””
Lily looked toward the basement.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not there.””
Everyone waited.
She whispered:
“Mommy’s old house.””
I frowned.
“Our old house?””
She nodded.
“The house before this one.””
I felt confused.
We had only lived there for two years.
Before Richard bought this mansion.
Before Lily was older.
Before Emily disappeared.
“Why would he go there?””
Lily looked at me.
“Because that’s where he hid the first one.””
The room became silent.
“The first what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The first memory.””
I didn’t understand.
But Daniel did.
His face went pale.
“No.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Richard kept backups.””
“Backups of what?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Everything.””
A horrible realization crossed his face.
“His research.””
The detective grabbed his radio.
“Send units to the old Hale residence.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Too late.””
The detective looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel stared at the dark computer screen.
“Because Richard didn’t go there to hide evidence.””
A pause.
“He went there to destroy it.””
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone turned.
Unknown number.
One message.
I opened it.
And my blood froze.
It was a picture.
Taken inside the old house.
A room I recognized.
My old bedroom.
On the bed was a small wooden box.
The same box I had kept childhood photographs in.
Under the picture were six words:
*Come alone if you want answers.*
Then another message appeared.
From Richard.
*Bring Lily.*
I stared at the screen.
And Emily immediately grabbed my arm.
“Claire.””
Her voice was terrified.
“Don’t go.””
I looked at my daughter.
At the child everyone had tried to control.
The child I had promised to protect.
Then I looked back at Richard’s message.
Because I knew something now.
Richard wasn’t running.
He was leading us somewhere.

And whatever was waiting in that old house…
Was the one secret he believed would finally destroy me.
