Chapter 7: The Daughter I Chose
I didn’t hear anything after Daniel said it.
Not the officers moving.
Not Detective Morgan asking questions.
Not Emily crying my name.
The only thing I heard was my own heartbeat.
A slow, painful rhythm reminding me that the world was still turning.
Even though mine had stopped.
“You’re lying.””
My voice sounded strange.
Small.
Almost like Lily’s.
Daniel looked at me.
“I wish I was.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to come into my home and rewrite my entire life.””
His expression didn’t change.
“I’m not rewriting anything.””
“You’re telling me the child I raised isn’t mine?””
My arms tightened around Lily.
The words felt wrong.
Even saying them felt like a betrayal.
Lily was mine.
She had been mine since the first time I held her.
Since the first night she cried and I walked through the house for hours because I couldn’t stand seeing her scared.
Since the first time she called me Mommy.
Blood had nothing to do with it.
But Daniel knew exactly where to attack.
He wasn’t just revealing a secret.
He was trying to destroy the foundation of my entire identity.
Detective Morgan stepped closer.
“Daniel, explain exactly what you mean.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Richard and Anna had a daughter.””
“Lily?””
“Yes.””
The detective glanced at me.
“And Claire?””
Daniel was silent.
Emily answered.
“She adopted her.””
I looked at Emily.
“You knew?””
The pain in her face told me everything.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I suspected something was wrong.””
“How long?””
“Claire…”
“How long?””
Emily looked down.
“Since before I disappeared.””
The betrayal hurt almost as much as Richard’s.
My own sister.
The person who had always protected me.
“You knew something about Lily?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I knew Richard was hiding something.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She swallowed.
“I found adoption papers.””
My breath caught.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I tried.””
The words came quickly.
“I tried, Claire.””
I stared at her.
“You were going through so much.””
“My sister disappeared.””
“I know.””
“You were my husband’s only supporter.””
Emily looked toward the staircase.
“Because I thought if I pushed too hard, Richard would hurt you.””
The anger inside me fought with the pain.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
The honesty broke something in me.
Because Emily wasn’t defending herself.
She was admitting she failed me.
And somehow that made it worse.
Lily looked between us.
“Mommy?””
I immediately turned toward her.
The fear in her voice pulled me back.
Not Richard.
Not Daniel.
Not the secrets.
Her.
Only her.
I knelt down.
“Hey.””
She looked at me.
“Am I not your daughter anymore?””
The question shattered me.
I grabbed her face gently.
“Never say that.””
“But Uncle Daniel said—”
“I don’t care what he said.””
“But if I’m not your real daughter…”
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“Lily.””
She stopped.
“You are my daughter because I chose you every single day.””
Her lower lip trembled.
“But…”
“No.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Your blood doesn’t decide who your mother is.””
She cried against my shoulder.
And I held her tighter.
Because in that moment, I realized something.
Richard and Daniel had spent years trying to decide what Lily was.
A subject.
A secret.
A piece of evidence.
A genetic result.
They had forgotten the one thing that mattered.
She was a child.
My child.
Detective Morgan watched quietly.
Then he turned back to Daniel.
“We need proof.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Where are the records?””
“Richard’s office.””
The detective looked toward the upper floor.
“You said you knew.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Because Richard kept the originals there.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed no one would ever search.””
A bitter smile crossed Daniel’s face.
“He loved keeping trophies.””
The officers moved toward the stairs.
I followed.
“Claire,” Emily said softly.
I stopped.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to say I forgave her.
But I couldn’t.
Not yet.
Too many years had passed.
Too many secrets had been buried.
“I need answers.””
Emily nodded.
“You deserve them.””
We walked upstairs.
Every step felt heavier.
The mansion looked different now.
The same hallway.
The same paintings.
The same expensive furniture.
But I saw everything differently.
The family portraits.
The holiday photographs.
The moments I thought were real.
How many of them had been carefully staged?
How many smiles had hidden secrets?
We reached Richard’s office.
The door stood closed.
The same door he had always protected.
Detective Morgan examined the lock.
“Locked.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Combination.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You know it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because Richard wanted me to have access.””
The detective narrowed his eyes.
“You two trusted each other?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at the locked door.
“We feared each other.””
He entered the combination.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
And immediately, I understood.
This wasn’t an office.
It was an archive.
Shelves lined every wall.
Files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Boxes.
Years of secrets.
Detective Morgan walked inside.
“Dear God.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone saw it.
Richard hadn’t hidden his crimes.
He had collected them.
Emily picked up a folder.
Her hands started shaking.
“My name.””
On the cover was written:
*EMILY BENNETT — OBSERVATION RECORD*
I took it from her.
Inside were pages.
Dates.
Medical notes.
Photographs.
I felt sick.
“He documented everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“He believed information was power.””
I turned another page.
Then stopped.
Because there was another file.
A much smaller one.
With Lily’s name.
My hands began trembling.
“No.””
Emily stepped beside me.
“Claire…”
I opened it.
The first page was a birth certificate.
The name was blurred.
But the date matched.
Lily’s birthday.
Below it was another document.
A medical report.
And at the bottom…
A signature.
Richard Hale.
I couldn’t breathe.
There was one more page.
A handwritten note.
Richard’s handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
*The child must never know her origin.*
My vision blurred.
Another line underneath.
*Claire is acceptable. She provides emotional stability.*
My stomach turned.
I dropped the paper.
Acceptable.
That was what I had been.
Not a mother.
Not a person.
A tool.
A convenient replacement.
I stepped back.
Emily caught my arm.
“Claire.””
I shook my head.
“He never loved me.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could lie anymore.
Then Detective Morgan found something.
A hidden compartment inside the desk.
Inside was a small black box.
He opened it carefully.
And everyone went silent.
Inside was a necklace.
A simple silver necklace with a tiny heart pendant.
Emily gasped.
“I know that.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She touched the pendant.
“Anna wore it.””
Daniel went completely still.
“Impossible.””
Detective Morgan looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel stared at the necklace.
“Because Richard buried it.””
The room froze.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
Emily picked up the necklace.
Her fingers trembled.
“There’s something engraved inside.””
She opened the pendant.
A tiny message was carved into the metal.
Four words.
*For my daughter, Lily.*
My breath caught.
Then the office computer suddenly turned on.
Nobody had touched it.
The screen glowed.
A video file appeared automatically.
The title was simple.
*CLAIRE.*
My heart stopped.
Detective Morgan moved closer.
“Don’t open it yet.””
But I already knew.
Richard wanted me to see it.
The file began playing.
His face appeared on the screen.
Older footage.
A private recording.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
And he smiled.
“Claire.””
My entire body went cold.
“If you’re watching this…”
He paused.
“…then Daniel failed.””
The video continued.
Richard leaned closer.
“And if Daniel told you about Lily…”
A slow smile appeared.
“Then he told you the truth.””
Everyone stared.
Because Richard wasn’t denying it.
He wasn’t afraid.
He looked prepared.
Then he said the words that made my blood freeze.
“Because Lily was never the secret I was protecting.””
A pause.
Then:
“The secret was that Claire already knew.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
On the screen, Richard smiled wider.
“You don’t remember, do you?””
The video flickered.
And the final sentence appeared:
“You weren’t Lily’s rescuer.””
May you like
My heart pounded.
“You were the reason Anna disappeared.””
