Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Photograph
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Not the officers.
Not Detective Morgan.
Not even Daniel.
The only sound in the mansion was the soft hum of the emergency lights and Lily’s uneven breathing as she stood behind me.
I stared at the photograph lying on the floor.
An old image.
Yellowed edges.
A moment frozen in time.
But there was one detail that made my entire body go cold.
The basement.
The same basement where Emily had been found.
Except in the photograph, the room looked different.
There was another bed.
Another chair.
Another person.
A woman sitting in the corner.
Her face was turned away from the camera.
But I could see enough.
Long dark hair.
Thin shoulders.
A hospital gown.
My fingers curled into fists.
“Who is she?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That frightened me more than if he had.
Because men like Daniel always had answers.
They always had explanations.
They always knew exactly what to say.
But now he was silent.
Detective Morgan stepped forward.
“Daniel Hale, put your hands where we can see them.””
Daniel slowly looked at him.
“You’re making the same mistake everyone makes.””
The detective kept his weapon raised.
“And what mistake is that?””
“Assuming Richard was the worst person in this house.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You expect us to believe you’re the good one?””
Daniel looked at me.
“No.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
“I expect you to understand that monsters rarely work alone.””
Emily pushed herself upright.
“You don’t get to talk like you’re different.””
Daniel’s eyes moved to her.
For a moment, something unreadable crossed his face.
Regret.
Maybe.
Or maybe I wanted it to be.
“You survived,” he said.
Emily laughed bitterly.
“You sound disappointed.””
“I’m surprised.””
“You tried to kill me.””
“No.””
His answer came instantly.
“I tried to contain a mistake.””
The words hit the room like a slap.
A mistake.
That was how he saw human lives.
Not people.
Not families.
Mistakes.
Emily’s face twisted with anger.
“You locked me underground for three years.””
Daniel looked at her calmly.
“And you’re alive because I did.””
Nobody spoke.
Because the sentence was insane.
But somehow, with everything I had learned tonight, I understood the danger.
People like Daniel never believed they were evil.
They believed they were necessary.
They convinced themselves every terrible thing they did was for a reason.
I stepped forward.
“What woman is in that picture?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I was hoping Lily remembered.””
I felt my entire body tense.
“Don’t say her name.””
His expression remained calm.
“Claire, you need to listen.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to walk into my house, threaten my daughter, and ask me to listen.””
Daniel glanced around the mansion.
A faint smile appeared.
“This was never your house.””
The words hurt because they were true in the cruelest possible way.
Every room.
Every piece of furniture.
Every decision.
Richard had always controlled everything.
But Daniel’s words suggested something worse.
That Richard himself had only been another piece.
“Who is she?”” Detective Morgan demanded.
Daniel looked back at the photograph.
“Her name was Anna.””
Emily froze.
I noticed immediately.
“You know that name?””
Emily looked terrified.
“I heard it.””
“When?””
“In the basement.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
“Richard and Daniel argued about her.””
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
“What did you hear?””
Emily stared at him.
“That she was still alive.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked away.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
He knew something.
Detective Morgan noticed too.
“You’re hiding information.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
“Where is Anna?””
Still nothing.
The detective stepped closer.
“Answer me.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“She’s the reason everything started.””
I looked at the photograph.
“The first victim?””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward me.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“The first person who discovered what they were doing.””
Emily shook her head.
“I thought I was the first.””
“You were the first person who could expose them.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Anna was the first person who understood them.””
I felt a chill.
“Who was she?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She was a researcher.””
“With your foundation?””
“Yes.””
“And what happened to her?””
His face hardened.
“She disappeared.””
Emily gave a bitter laugh.
“Funny how everyone around Richard disappears.””
Daniel ignored her.
“She found records.””
“What records?””
“The original research.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter’s face was pale.
“What research?””
Daniel stared at me.
“The human memory program.””
The phrase made my stomach turn.
“You mean children.””
“Yes.””
“And Lily?””
Daniel looked at her.
“She was never supposed to be involved.””
I almost shouted.
“But she was.””
“Yes.””
“Because of you.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
That made me hate him more.
“Why her?””
He looked at Lily.
“Because she witnessed something.””
“What?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then:
“Anna’s disappearance.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Lily.
My daughter looked down.
A memory.
A hidden memory.
Something she had buried because she was too young to understand.
“Lily,” I whispered.
She shook her head.
“I don’t want to remember.””
I knelt beside her.
“You don’t have to.””
But she looked at me.
“I think I do.””
The officers remained silent.
Everyone understood.
The truth had been hidden inside a child for years.
And now it was finally coming out.
Lily wiped her eyes.
“I saw a lady.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“Tell them.””
I immediately looked at him.
“Don’t pressure her.””
He ignored me.
Lily continued.
“She was in the basement.””
Emily’s face went pale.
“But I thought…”
“I know,” Lily whispered.
“You didn’t know.””
She looked at Emily.
“I saw her before you.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“What?””
Lily hugged herself.
“Daddy brought her downstairs.””
My heart raced.
“Richard?””
She nodded.
“He was angry.””
“What did he do?””
Lily looked terrified.
“He told her she ruined everything.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Like he already knew what was coming.
“And then?””
Lily swallowed.
“Uncle Daniel came.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He told Daddy that the woman couldn’t leave.””
A heavy silence.
“Why?””
Lily’s voice dropped.
“Because she knew about the baby.””
The room changed.
Everyone felt it.
The word.
The baby.
Detective Morgan frowned.
“What baby?””
Lily looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
She looked at Daniel.
“But they kept saying it.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was shaking.
“What baby?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was the first time I saw him truly afraid.
Not nervous.
Not cautious.
Afraid.
“Answer her.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then at me.
Then at Lily.
Finally, he whispered:
“Anna was pregnant.””
Nobody moved.
The detective’s face hardened.
“With whose child?””
Daniel looked at Richard’s office door.
The one upstairs.
The one that had always been locked.
Then he said:
“Richard’s.””
My breath caught.
Emily stared at him.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“And the child was born.””
The hallway went silent.
I felt Lily’s hand slip into mine.
“Where is the child?””
Daniel looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something close to guilt in his eyes.
“That’s the part I never understood.””
“What?””
He took a slow breath.
“Richard told everyone Anna’s baby died.””
A pause.
“But the records said something else.””
My heartbeat thundered.
“What records?””
Daniel looked toward the front door.
Toward the darkness outside.
“Birth records.””
“Whose?””
He looked directly at Lily.
Then he said:
“The baby was registered under a name Richard never wanted anyone to find.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Your daughter’s name.””
I felt the world tilt.
“No.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Lily was not just a witness.””
My fingers tightened around my daughter.
“She was the child Richard and Anna were trying to hide.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
But Daniel’s next words destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.
“Because Claire…”
He looked at me with a sadness that felt almost human.
“You were never Lily’s biological mother.””
The mansion disappeared around me.
The walls.
The lights.
The officers.
Everything.
All I could see was my daughter.
The little girl I had raised.
The little girl I loved.
The little girl I would die protecting.
Then Lily whispered something so quietly I almost missed it.
“Mommy…”
I looked down.
Her face was covered in tears.
“I remember now.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She looked toward the basement.
May you like
And whispered:
“I remember who my real mother is.””
