Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Other Tag

Nobody moved.

The question stayed in the storage unit like a sound that refused to disappear.

“Who did you really get that tag from?””

Rachel’s eyes were locked on Marcus.

Marcus looked down at the metal hanging from his fingers.

For the first time since I met him, he looked lost.

Not guilty.

Not angry.

Lost.

“I don’t understand.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“You said Daniel gave you that.””

“He did.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“Daniel gave someone a tag that night.””

Marcus stared at her.

Rachel pointed at the chain around his neck.

“That isn’t the one.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked at Marcus.

Then at the tag.

Then back at Rachel.

My mind was racing.

Too many secrets.

Too many people connected to my son.

Too many years where I knew nothing.

“Someone explain this,” I said.

My voice cut through the silence.

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m tired of standing in rooms where everyone knows more about my son than I do.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“You all talk about Daniel like he belongs to a story you were part of.””

My hand touched the photograph on the desk.

“But he was my son.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was nothing to say.

Rachel looked at Marcus.

“Tell us.””

Marcus ran his hand over his face.

“I told you the truth.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You told us part of it.””

Marcus looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

Rachel’s voice cracked.

“Daniel trusted you with something important.””

Marcus looked at the tag.

“And I protected it.””

“Where did you get it?””

A long silence.

Then Marcus whispered:

“From Daniel.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Marcus…”

“I was there.””

The room froze.

I looked at him.

“There?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“The night he disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“You were there?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Yes.””

Anger rushed through me.

“You told me you knew him.””

“I did.””

“You told me he changed your life.””

“He did.””

“You never told me you were there when my son vanished.””

Marcus looked down.

“I didn’t know how.””

I felt my hands shaking.

“Try.””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“I found Daniel after everything happened.””

“Found him where?””

He looked away.

“Somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice broke slightly.

“It’s the only answer I can give you right now.””

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

“Because if I say everything before we know who is listening, people could get hurt.””

I looked around the storage unit.

The evidence.

The files.

The hidden key.

All of it.

The truth had been sitting here for years.

Waiting.

Rachel walked toward Marcus.

“What did Daniel tell you?””

Marcus looked at her.

“He said if anything happened, I had to make sure Arthur found Buddy.””

My eyes moved to my dog.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Buddy carried the proof.””

I looked at the collar.

The key.

The hidden compartment.

The dog tag.

All pieces of something Daniel had built.

Rachel whispered:

“But the tag…”

Marcus looked down.

“I took it from him.””

Everyone froze.

“You took it?””

Marcus nodded.

“He gave me his real tag.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“Then what is that?””

Marcus stared at the metal.

“I don’t know.””

For the first time, he looked afraid.

I walked closer.

“Let me see.””

Marcus handed it to me.

I turned it over.

The scratches.

The engraving.

The small mark.

Everything looked real.

But Rachel was certain.

“This isn’t Daniel’s.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I saw Daniel bury his own.””

The words hit me.

“You saw?””

Rachel nodded.

“The night he prepared to leave.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“You never told me.””

“Because Daniel made me promise.””

I closed my eyes.

Another promise.

Another secret.

Another person protecting my son’s wishes while I lived in the dark.

“Enough.””

My voice was quieter now.

But everyone stopped.

“I don’t care about promises anymore.””

I looked at the evidence around us.

“I need the truth.””

Marcus nodded.

“You’re right.””

He reached into his jacket.

Then slowly removed another chain.

Not the one he had shown before.

A second one.

My breath caught.

A real military tag.

Older.

Worn.

The kind that had seen years of life.

“This is the one Daniel gave me.””

Rachel stepped closer.

She recognized it.

“That’s his.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared.

“Then why hide it?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Daniel told me someone would try to replace the truth with something easier to believe.””

My eyes moved to the other tag.

The fake one.

The planted one.

Someone had wanted us to find it.

Someone had wanted us looking in the wrong direction.

Then Buddy suddenly barked.

Everyone turned.

The old dog stood near the doorway.

Staring down the hallway.

Marcus immediately moved.

“What is it?””

Buddy growled.

A sound I had never heard from him before.

Then the lights in the storage facility flickered.

Once.

Twice.

And went out.

In the darkness, someone whispered from outside the door.

“Arthur Carter.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

At the pet store.

The stranger.

Evan.

But Evan was inside the room with us.

May you like

Which meant someone else was outside.

And they knew exactly where we were.
