Chapter 6: The Man Outside the Door
The stranger outside didn’t knock.
He didn’t enter.
He simply stood there.
Watching.
That scared me more.
People who wanted something usually came closer.
This man was waiting.
Marcus moved in front of me.
A protective instinct.
The same instinct Daniel must have carried.
I noticed.
And for some reason, that hurt.
“Who is he?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
His eyes stayed on the door.
“I don’t know.””
I almost laughed.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Marcus looked at me.
“I expect you to understand that if I knew for certain, we wouldn’t still be standing here.””
Buddy growled softly.
Not loudly.
Just enough.
I looked down.
I had never heard him make that sound at a stranger.
Not even once.
Marcus noticed.
“Daniel said Buddy had good instincts.””
I looked at the dog.
“So do I.””
Marcus nodded.
“Then trust yours.””
The stranger outside finally moved.
One step closer.
The automatic doors opened.
A bell rang.
The same bell that had sounded dozens of times that morning.
But this time, it felt different.
The man entered.
He was dressed casually.
Too casually.
Dark jeans.
Plain jacket.
Nothing threatening.
That almost made it worse.
He looked directly at us.
Not at the products.
Not at Claire.
Us.
“Arthur Carter?””
My body went still.
I hadn’t told him my name.
Marcus noticed too.
The stranger smiled faintly.
“Mr. Carter.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man glanced at Marcus.
Then at the tags.
Then back at me.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to meet you like this.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“You need to leave.””
The man ignored him.
“I’m here because of Daniel.””
Those words always changed the room.
My son’s name.
Always powerful.
Always painful.
I stepped closer.
“What about Daniel?””
The man looked at me.
“I know you have questions.””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
He looked at Marcus.
“But some answers are dangerous.””
Marcus moved closer.
“Don’t listen to him.””
The stranger smiled.
“Still protecting him?””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You don’t know anything about him.””
The man looked at the dog tag.
“I know enough.””
I felt my anger rise.
“You keep talking about my son like he’s a mystery.””
The man looked at me.
“He was trying to stop something.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I pointed at the door.
“Then explain.””
The man hesitated.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Then he said:
“Daniel trusted the wrong people.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“No.””
The stranger looked at him.
“You know it’s true.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
I looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Neither answered.
That was becoming a pattern.
I was tired of secrets.
Tired of people protecting me from the truth.
“I lost my son,” I said.
My voice shook.
“But I will not spend another day being treated like I’m too fragile to know why.””
The store became silent.
Even the stranger looked surprised.
I continued.
“If Daniel left something behind, I deserve to understand.””
Marcus looked at me.
Something changed in his face.
Pride.
Maybe.
Because I sounded like the man Daniel described.
The stranger reached into his pocket.
Claire gasped.
Marcus stepped forward.
But the man only pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the counter.
I looked down.
And my entire body froze.
Because it was Daniel.
Not a memory.
Not an old picture.
Daniel.
Older.
Different.
But alive.
Standing beside someone I didn’t recognize.
My hand trembled.
“When was this taken?””
The stranger didn’t answer.
I looked up.
“When?””
His expression became serious.
“Three years after everyone believed he was gone.””
My knees weakened.
Marcus caught my arm.
The stranger continued:
“Your son wanted you to know the truth.””
I stared at the photograph.
My son’s face.
A face I had mourned.
A face I thought I would never see again.
“Where is he?””
The stranger looked away.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because his silence carried an answer.
Not the answer I wanted.
The answer I feared.
Marcus whispered:
“Arthur…”
I looked at him.
And then the stranger said:
“Before you ask where Daniel is…”
He paused.
May you like
His eyes moved to Buddy.
“…you need to understand why your son left him with you.””
