Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew His Last Secret

The woman stood just inside the entrance.

She didn’t look dangerous.

That was the problem.

Danger was easy to recognize when it wore a uniform.

When it carried a weapon.

When it shouted.

But this woman looked tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a burden nobody could see.

She was in her early forties.

Black hair pulled back.

Simple clothes.

Trembling hands.

Her eyes moved from Buddy to me.

Then to the dog tag.

“Where did you get that?””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

She looked at Marcus.

Then at Evan.

And something like fear crossed her face.

“You brought him here?””

Marcus frowned.

“Who are you?””

The woman ignored him.

She looked at me.

“Are you Arthur Carter?””

My heart sank.

Another person who knew my name.

Another person connected to my son.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

I hated those words.

Everyone who brought me pain started with those words.

I’m sorry.

I don’t want to hurt you.

I didn’t mean for this to happen.

But sorry never brought anyone back.

“Why are you sorry?””

She looked down.

“Because I knew Daniel was trying to come home.””

The room went silent.

My fingers tightened.

“Trying?””

She nodded.

“He never stopped.””

I felt Marcus look at me.

The woman took a shaky breath.

“My name is Rachel.””

I waited.

“I worked with Daniel.””

Evan’s expression changed.

“You weren’t supposed to be here.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Neither were you.””

That told me everything.

There were too many people.

Too many secrets.

Too many pieces of a puzzle I never knew existed.

I looked at Marcus.

“How many people knew?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I turned back to Rachel.

“What happened to my son?””

Her eyes dropped.

“I don’t know where he is now.””

Now.

That word again.

Not was.

Not was buried.

Not was gone.

Now.

I stepped closer.

“You’re telling me my son is alive?””

Rachel looked at Buddy.

“I’m telling you Daniel believed he would see you again.””

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn’t stand.

Buddy pressed against my leg.

I remembered Daniel as a child.

Running through the yard.

Falling.

Getting back up.

Always getting back up.

“What did he leave behind?””

Rachel looked at the key in Marcus’s hand.

“Did he hide it?””

I nodded.

She closed her eyes.

“He knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Buddy would protect it.””

My throat tightened.

“You all keep talking about my dog like he was part of the plan.””

Rachel looked at Buddy.

“He was.””

I stared.

“Explain.””

She slowly walked closer.

Buddy watched her carefully.

Then something impossible happened.

He stepped toward her.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“He remembers.””

I felt a strange pain in my chest.

Because Buddy had forgotten many things.

He forgot where he left toys.

He forgot commands.

But he remembered people.

He remembered Daniel.

He remembered anyone connected to him.

Rachel knelt beside him.

“Daniel loved you.””

She looked at Buddy.

“He talked about you every day.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t he come back?””

Rachel’s face changed.

Pain.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody knew.

That was the answer that haunted me.

Rachel stood.

“But I know he tried.””

She looked at the key.

“The storage unit has everything.””

“What everything?””

“Evidence.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Rachel.””

She ignored him.

“Daniel collected proof.””

“Of what?””

She hesitated.

Then she looked around the store.

At the cameras.

At the windows.

At the people nearby.

Her voice lowered.

“Of people who wanted him silent.””

A chill moved through me.

Evan looked toward the entrance.

“Someone followed us.””

Marcus immediately looked outside.

My heart raced.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Arthur, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“If Daniel trusted you with Buddy, it means he believed you were the last safe place.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Her expression broke.

“It means he knew one day they might come looking for what Buddy was carrying.””

I looked down.

The old collar.

The old tag.

The thing I had touched every day without knowing.

Rachel whispered:

“Your son didn’t disappear.””

May you like

She paused.

“He was erased.””
