Chapter 12: Daniel’s Final Message
The recording device felt impossibly small in my hand.
A lifetime of questions.
A lifetime of pain.
And the possibility that my son had left behind answers.
All inside a piece of plastic and metal.
We returned to the storage unit.
Nobody wanted to listen in the hallway.
Nobody wanted Daniel’s voice to echo through a place where strangers could hear.
So we closed the door.
Just us.
Me.
Buddy.
Marcus.
Rachel.
Evan.
Thomas.
Five people connected by one man who wasn’t there.
I pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then—
“Dad.””
My knees almost gave out.
Because it was him.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Daniel.
His voice.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Buddy immediately lifted his head.
His ears moved.
He knew.
“Dad, if you’re hearing this…”
Daniel paused.
I covered my mouth.
“Then Buddy did what I knew he would do.””
A broken laugh escaped me.
Of course.
Even now, my son was talking about the dog first.
“Buddy was always better at finding his way home than any of us.””
I looked down.
Buddy stared at the device.
Listening.
“Dad, I’m sorry.””
The tears came immediately.
“I know you hate that word.””
I smiled through them.
“He always knew.””
Daniel continued.
“But I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“I never left because I wanted to.””
The room became silent.
“I left because I found something that could hurt innocent people.””
Marcus looked down.
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I thought I could fix it quickly.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“I thought I could protect everyone and come back before you even noticed.””
I laughed quietly through tears.
“Idiot.””
The recording continued.
“But you noticed.””
Everyone looked at me.
Because they knew.
A father always notices.
“I knew you would search.””
Daniel paused.
“That’s why I had to make sure you had something stronger than hope.””
The sound of paper moving came through the recording.
“Dad, Marcus has the real tag.””
Marcus looked down.
Thomas looked away.
“Trust him.””
My eyes moved to Marcus.
“I know he’ll try to carry everything himself.””
Marcus wiped his face.
“Because that’s what you do.””
A small silence.
“Dad…”
Daniel’s voice changed.
More serious.
“There are people who will tell you I made mistakes.””
I listened.
“They’ll say I was reckless.””
Another pause.
“They’re right.””
I smiled sadly.
That was Daniel.
Always honest.
“But they’ll also tell you I abandoned you.””
The room felt colder.
“Don’t believe them.””
I closed my eyes.
“Not for one second.””
Daniel took a breath.
“You were the reason I survived as long as I did.””
My hand covered my heart.
“I carried your lessons with me.””
The recording crackled.
“And Buddy carried home.””
The dog moved closer to the device.
Like he was waiting.
“Dad, if Buddy is with you, then I know you’re not alone.””
I broke.
A sound escaped me that I hadn’t made in years.
Not anger.
Not pain.
Grief.
Love.
Everything together.
Daniel continued.
“There’s one more thing you need to know.””
Everyone became still.
“The people who caused this…”
A pause.
“They’re not finished.””
Marcus looked up.
Rachel’s face went pale.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Someone inside our own circle betrayed us.””
The recording stopped for a second.
Then came his final words.
“Dad, I’m sorry I couldn’t say goodbye.””
My eyes closed.
“But I need you to do one thing.””
I whispered:
“What?””
Even though he couldn’t hear me.
Daniel answered through the recording.
“Bring Buddy home.””
The message ended.
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Then the device clicked.
Finished.
I stared at it.
That was all.
Not where he was.
Not who betrayed him.
Not how to find him.
Just one request.
Bring Buddy home.
I looked down at my dog.
Buddy looked back.
And then I noticed something.
Something I had never seen before.
A small scar near his collar.
A mark hidden beneath his fur.
Marcus saw it too.
“Arthur…”
I touched it gently.
“What?””
Marcus leaned closer.
“That’s not a scar.””
I looked carefully.
It was a symbol.
The same symbol from Daniel’s notebook.
The same mark from the dog tag.
Rachel stepped closer.
Her face changed.
“Daniel didn’t put the evidence in the collar.””
I looked at her.
“Then where?””
She stared at Buddy.
Her voice dropped.
“He put it somewhere nobody would ever search.””
I felt my heart stop.
Marcus whispered:
“Inside Buddy.””
May you like
And at that moment, Buddy looked toward the door.
Because someone outside had started unlocking it.
