Chapter 4: The Family Secret

The name stayed in the air.

Like smoke.

Like something poisonous that nobody wanted to breathe.

“My brother.””

Vanessa repeated it softly.

Arthur’s face changed.

Not much.

Most people would have missed it.

But I didn’t.

I had known my grandfather my entire life.

I knew when he was angry.

I knew when he was disappointed.

And I knew when something hurt him.

“Your brother?”” Arthur asked.

Vanessa looked up.

“Yes.””

“Name.””

She hesitated.

Arthur’s voice sharpened.

“Name.””

“Michael.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Arthur.

He looked older suddenly.

Not weaker.

Just older.

Like a memory he had spent decades burying had just been dragged back into the light.

“Michael Voss,” Arthur whispered.

I had heard the name before.

Not often.

But enough.

Vanessa’s family had always been complicated.

She rarely talked about them.

Whenever I asked about her childhood, she changed the subject.

I thought it was because she was private.

Now I wondered if she was hiding something much bigger.

Arthur walked toward the fireplace.

“My daughter’s son.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Vanessa’s brother is my grandson.””

The room shifted.

I looked between them.

“You never told me.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I didn’t think it mattered.””

Arthur turned.

“Family always matters.””

The bitterness in his voice surprised me.

“Especially the parts people try to erase.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened between you two?””

She didn’t answer.

Arthur did.

“Michael was brilliant.””

The way he said it told me there was a story behind that word.

Not admiration.

Regret.

“He was also reckless.””

Arthur stared into the distance.

“He believed everything had a price. People. Loyalty. Love.””

Vanessa whispered.

“He wasn’t always like that.””

Arthur looked at her.

“No?””

She flinched.

That reaction told me everything.

There was history there.

Painful history.

Maria stepped closer.

“Daniel, Lily needs rest.””

I nodded.

She was right.

My daughter had already experienced enough for one night.

But before Maria could leave, Arthur stopped her.

“Wait.””

He looked at the recorder.

“There is still one question.””

“What?””

Arthur looked at Vanessa.

“If Michael wanted the will changed, why use Vanessa?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I knew why.

Because she was useful.

Because she was close.

Because she had access.

But Arthur wanted her to say it.

Finally, she did.

“Because he knew you trusted me.””

Those words hurt more than I expected.

I looked away.

Arthur noticed.

“Daniel.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Because I didn’t want comfort.

I didn’t want anyone telling me I was fooled.

I already knew.

The worst part wasn’t that Vanessa lied.

The worst part was that I gave her every reason to believe she could.

I defended her.

I protected her.

I ignored small moments because I wanted my family to work.

And my daughter paid the price.

Vanessa saw my expression.

For a brief moment, something like regret appeared.

“I didn’t want Lily involved.””

I looked at her.

“But she was.””

“I panicked.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

And that surprised even me.

“You made choices.””

She looked down.

“You chose yourself.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Arthur’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at him.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He ended the call.

“The security company.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about them?””

“They found someone outside the property.””

“Who?””

Arthur looked toward the dark windows.

“Michael.””

Vanessa went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Arthur stared at her.

“Why?””

Because she knew something.

Something she hadn’t told us.

And before she could answer, the front doors opened.

Every person in the foyer turned.

A man stood there.

Older than I expected.

Confident.

Calm.

Wearing a dark coat with the kind of smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

Arthur stepped forward.

“Michael.””

The man looked around the mansion.

Then he smiled.

“Hello, grandfather.””

Nobody moved.

Then his eyes landed on Vanessa.

“You told them?””

Vanessa froze.

And in that moment, I understood something.

She wasn’t the mastermind.

She was a piece on the board.

Michael looked directly at me.

“So you’re Daniel.””

I stood between him and the staircase where Lily had disappeared.

“Yes.””

He smiled slightly.

“I’ve heard a lot about you.””

I didn’t like the way he said it.

“What do you want?””

Michael glanced at Arthur.

Then back at me.

“What I’ve always wanted.””

He stepped into the foyer.

“My place in this family.””

May you like

And I knew the nightmare wasn’t ending.

It was just beginning.
